Dental plaque-induced gingival conditions.

OBJECTIVE: This review proposes revisions to the current classification system for gingival diseases and provides a rationale for how it differs from the 1999 classification system. IMPORTANCE: Gingival inflammation in response to bacterial plaque accumulation (microbial biofilms) is considered the key risk factor for the onset of periodontitis. Thus, control of gingival inflammation is essential for the primary prevention of periodontitis. FINDINGS: The clinical characteristics common to dental plaque-induced inflammatory gingival conditions include: a) clinical signs and symptoms of inflam

Denitrification in human dental plaque.

BACKGROUND: Microbial denitrification is not considered important in human-associated microbial communities. Accordingly, metabolic investigations of the microbial biofilm communities of human dental plaque have focused on aerobic respiration and acid fermentation of carbohydrates, even though it is known that the oral habitat is constantly exposed to nitrate (NO3-) concentrations in the millimolar range and that dental plaque houses bacteria that can reduce this NO3- to nitrite (NO2-). RESULTS: We show that dental plaque mediates denitrification of NO3- to nitric oxide (NO), nitrous oxide (N

Dental plaque-induced gingival diseases.

Gingival diseases are a diverse family of complex and distinct pathological entities found within the gingiva that are the result of a variety of etiologies. There are several clinical characteristics common to all gingival diseases and these features include clinical signs of inflammation, signs and symptoms that are confined to the gingiva, reversibility of the disease by removing the etiology, the presence of bacterial laden plaque to initiate and/or exacerbate the severity of the disease and a possible role as a precursor for attachment loss around teeth. Defining and classifying gingival

Mechanisms of dental plaque formation.

Much effort has been placed on elucidating the diverse mechanisms of microbial adhesion to tooth surfaces. Both specific and non-specific types of adhesion have been envisaged. Pioneer colonizers represent a selected part of the oral microflora, and it has been assumed that specific adhesin-receptor interactions between the microbial surface and the pellicle account for this specificity. Whereas microbial adhesion to tooth surfaces is a general prerequisite for initiation of plaque formation, microbial multiplication is probably the dominant feature in the build-up of dental plaque. Helicobacter pylori in dental plaque.

Human and animal stomachs were considered the only reservoirs of Helicobacter pylori until it was identified in human dental plaque (DP). H. pylori is infrequent in populations from developed countries, but is widespread in those from developing countries. The failure of triple drug therapy to clear H. pylori from DP, despite its clearance from gastric mucosa, raised the possibility of DP as a permanent reservoir of H. pylori and a potential source of reinfection of gastric mucosa. Attempts should be made to eradicate H. pylori both from the gastric mucosa and from DP to ensure a permanent cur

Combination chemotherapy of dental plaque infections.

Chemotherapy against dental plague micro-organisms has proved effective in combatting both caries and periodontal disease. Chlorhexidine is the drug of choice when a broad-spectrum antiplaque agent is called for. However, because its mechanism of action is unspecific and the high concentrations needed for maximum effect may cause side effects, combination chemotherapy has been suggested. Chlorhexidine has been successfully combined with fluoride and, more recently, with xylitol. The combination allows the use of less concentrated solutions than if the agents were administered alone. Further, t

[Helicobacter pylori in the dental plaque].

Helicobacter pylori (Hp) were detected in the dental plaque in 40 patients with peptic ulcer, chronic gastritis or gastric cancer with rapid urease test, anti-Hp fluorescein-labelled antibody staining, bacterial culture and electronic microscopy. At the same time, biopsy specimens from the gastric antrum of these patients were studied with WS staining and rapid urease test to detect Hp. The results show that a great lot of Hps is present in most of the patients' dental plaque. The morphological, biochemical and immunological characteristics of the Hp in the dental plaque are similar to those H

Plaque and Dental Caries Risk in Midlife.

Dental caries is an endogenous microbial community-based disease resulting from an ecological shift from dynamic stability to metabolic imbalance in a consortium of acidogenic and aciduric bacteria comprising the dental plaque biofilm. Participants were members of the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, a longitudinal investigation of health and behaviour in a cohort born in Dunedin, New Zealand. Oral biofilm samples (collected at age 32 years) from anterior labial supragingival, posterior lingual supragingival, posterior subgingival, and the dorsum of the tongue habitats f

SYSTEMATIZATION OF STAINED DENTAL PLAQUE IN CHILDREN.

Deposits on teeth may differ in color and degree of cariogenicity. Their prevalence rate is up to 18%. The review of relevant literature revealed a lack of classification of stained plaque in children. In this paper the systematization of stained plaque is proposed. The aim of our study was to systematize stained dental plaques. The literature review and two own researches, involving 154 children from 6 to 15 years and 408 children from 6 to 17 years, resulted in the proposed systematization of stained plaques, based on plaque color, its localization, degree of cariogenicity and classes of ass

Plaque pH and microflora of dental plaque on sound and carious root surfaces.

Given the hypothesis that root caries is the result of acid formation by acidogenic micro-organisms, the present study was performed to relate sucrose-induced pH response of dental plaque on root surfaces to the microbial composition of the overlying plaque. Seventeen caries-active elderly Chinese with poor oral hygiene and with both sound and carious root surfaces were examined. Plaque pH was measured before and up to one hour after a controlled sucrose mouthrinse. Plaque samples for microbiologic analyses were collected from 2 sound and 2 or 3 carious pH-measurement sites in each subject. Th

Structure of dental plaque and the plaque-enamel interface in human experimental caries.

This study describes the ultrastructure of dental plaque and the plaque-enamel interface after 2 and 3 weeks' exposure to a cariogenic challenge. Five dental students carried a total of 25 specimens of smooth surface enamel in intraoral acrylic appliances. During the initial 3 days the volunteers refrained from oral hygiene and performed nine daily mouthrinses with 10% (w/v) solutions of sucrose. After the 3rd day the volunteers cleaned their natural teeth, whereas the experimental sites were left undisturbed except for nine daily extraoral 5-min immersions in 5% (w/v) solutions of sucrose. The role of microbial interactions in dental caries: Dental plaque microbiota analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is a result of the ecological dysfunction of the polymicrobial community on the tooth surface, which evolves through microbial interactions. In this study, we conducted a thorough analysis of the dental plaque microbiome to comprehend its multi-microbial aetiology. MATERIALS AND METHOD: In this study, plaque was collected from healthy tooth surfaces, shallow carious teeth and deep carious teeth, and bacterial composition and abundance were assessed using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. Random forest and LEfSe were used to profile various microorganisms at each s

Composition and cariogenic potential of dental plaque fluid.

Our understanding of the chemical events that take place at the tooth-plaque interface has improved greatly through studies of the chemical composition and properties of dental plaque fluid. In the absence of fermentable carbohydrate, plaque fluid has been found to be supersaturated with respect to tooth mineral and other calcium phosphate phases, thus exhibiting the potential to support calculus formation and the remineralization of incipient carious lesions. Following the exposure to fermentable carbohydrate, the degree of saturation of plaque fluid decreases rapidly, primarily due to lactic

Dental plaque revisited: bacteria associated with periodontal disease.

Between 3-12 weeks after the beginning of supragingival plaque formation, a distinctive subgingival microflora predominantly made up of gram-negative, anaerobic bacteria and including some motile species, becomes established. In order to establish in a periodontal site, a species must be able to attach to one of several surfaces including the tooth (or host derived substances adhering to the tooth), the sulcular or pocket epithelium, or other bacterial species that are attached to these surfaces (Socransky and Haffajee 1991). Bacterial adhesion has demonstrated specificity in the mechanisms in
