Dental caries, a chronic infectious disease affecting oral health, has undergone significant evolution in its epidemiological characteristics throughout human history. Archaeological evidence indicates that caries is one of the oldest human diseases, with its origins traceable to carious lesions identified in early modern human fossils from the Paleolithic period. These findings suggest that caries had already emerged among hunter-gatherer populations prior to the advent of agriculture, although at a generally low prevalence, a pattern closely associated with a diet rich in coarse fibers and l

Principal component analysis (PCA) is a statistical tool that condenses the information contained in a large group of independent variables to a more manageable number of variables. This is useful when performing an analysis on data sets with a large number of variables. PCA restructures the original independent variables into new variables called principal components that maximize the information present in the data. The principal components then act as a substitute for the independent variables in an analysis. The purpose of this article is to present PCA in an understandable way for researc

Dental caries is a prevalent infectious disease caused by microbial metabolism, affecting the hard tissues of teeth. According to data from the Fourth National Oral Health Epidemiological Survey, there is a gradual increase in caries prevalence in China, particularly among children and elderly individuals. As an etiological factor for dental lesions, caries not only impact oral health but also exhibit significant associations with various systemic diseases, suggesting that systemic diseases may serve as potential risk factors of caries development. To effectively implement the plan of national

In dental research, in common with other forms of scientific research, the use of laboratory animals is necessary to carry out many investigations that may not be undertaken on man, and to control biological variability. In South Africa the main experimental animals used in dental research are rats and vervet monkeys, although other species such as dogs and baboons have been used. This paper lists examples of published dental research carried out in laboratory animals in South Africa in the fields of bone healing, dental caries, dental materials, growth studies, oral cancer, oral mucosa and pe

Dental follicle cells (DFCs) are dental stem cells that can only be obtained from tooth germs or after extraction of unerupted wisdom teeth. For many years, DFCs have been studied in basic research and preclinical studies in regenerative dentistry, as they are involved in both the development of the periodontium and tooth eruption. Since the first isolation, the number of studies with DFCs has increased. This article summarizes the most important articles of the last five years to provide an overview of current research topics. The focus was on basic research and preclinical research. Basic re

This is a critical time in the history of the dental profession for it to fully embrace the responsibility to safeguard its reputation as a learned profession. In this golden era of scientific and technological advances, opportunities abound to create new diagnostics, preventions, treatments, and cures to improve oral health. Dental schools are the largest national resource entrusted with the responsibility to educate, train, and retain oral health researchers who can leverage such technologies and research opportunities that will benefit the profession at large as well as patients. This artic

In the Netherlands, Dental Public Health Service workers work in the healthcare delivery system to promote dental health. Since 1994, research has been conducted in Flevoland on the condition of children's teeth. This research has shaped the content of the dental health promotion directed at children in this region. The research comprises two parts: questionnaires for parents and children above the age of 12 and a dental examination of children aged 6 and 12 in the regional primary schools. The dental examination registers the health of the children's teeth. Sound teeth are defined as being fr

Dental diseases exhibit high complexity and prevalence, stemming from their complex cellular composition, intricate anatomical structure, and modern lifestyle factors, while the lack of versatile preclinical models poses significant research challenges. Recent advances in organoids and organ-on-a-chip (OOC) platforms offer novel strategies to overcome this dilemma. Herein, this review begins with a categorization of dental organoids based on cell sources and construction strategies. Then, a detailed analysis is provided regarding the applications and limitations of various dental organoid type

INTRODUCTION: With the increased stress among the students, their sleep patterns have been derailed from the routine. Hence, in our study, we aimed to appraise among the dental students the occurrence of sleep disorders.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a questionnaire-based survey study among 1115 dental students of 1-4 years. The survey was based on SLEEP-50 that had 50 questions that were given scores from 1 to 4 based on the response. The scores were analyzed for the statistical connotation, keeping P < 0.05 as significant.
RESULTS: We observed that 352 students suffered from sleep di

AIM: Xerostomia and hyposalivation represent a global health burden, affecting a considerable proportion of adults worldwide. This study explored the trends of the scientific production on xerostomia and hyposalivation in the dental literature using the Scopus database.
METHODOLOGY: Records related to the topic of xerostomia/hyposalivation, published since inception up to December 31, 2024, were searched on May 5, 2025 in Scopus, using the following search terms: "xerostomia," "hyposalivation," "dry mouth," "salivary hypofunction," "salivary dysfunction." The following categories were consid

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to determine the feasibility of conducting clinical research using electronic dental record (EDR) data from U.S. solo and small-group general dental practices in the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (network) and evaluate the data completeness and correctness before performing survival analyses of root canal treatment (RCT) and posterior composite restorations (PCR).
METHODS: Ninety-nine network general dentistry practices that used Dentrix or EagleSoft EDR shared de-identified data of patients who received PCR and/or RCT on permanent teeth

Despite substantial advances in dental and periodontal research, study findings are still frequently interpreted primarily on the basis of statistical significance, potentially leading to overestimation of their clinical relevance. This issue is particularly relevant in studies, where small absolute numerical changes in outcomes such as clinical attachment level or probing pocket depth may reach statistical significance without translating into meaningful clinical benefits for patients. Greater emphasis should be placed on effect sizes, which provide critical information on the magnitude and d

Temporomandibular dysfunction and the synonymous craniomandibular dysfunction remain contentious topics in the literature. Historically, research has focused on occlusion and its association with these conditions, often yielding contradictory findings. On the basis of a Medline search of these terms covering the past 40 years, in relation to current terms such as evidence-based dentistry and the pyramid of evidence, these methodological aspects were investigated. This resulted in recommendations for future research and considerations with respect to the role of dental occlusion in temporomandi

Dental stem cells (DSCs), a distinct subset of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), are isolated from dental tissues, such as dental pulp, exfoliated deciduous teeth, periodontal ligament, and apical papilla. They have emerged as a promising source of stem cell therapy for tissue regeneration and autoimmune disorders. The main types of DSCs include dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED), periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), and stem cells from apical papilla (SCAP). Each type exhibits distinct advantages: easy access via minimally invasive proced

The incidence of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in the population is low, but specifics are unknown. Potential risk factors include bisphosphonate treatment, steroid treatment, osteoporosis, and head/neck radiation. This Dental Practice-Based Research Network study estimated ONJ incidence and odds ratios from bisphosphonate exposure and other risk factors using a key word search and manual chart reviews of electronic records for adults aged > or = 35 years enrolled during 1995-2006 in 2 large health care organizations. We found 16 ONJ cases among 572,606 cohort members; 7 additional cases were
