Effects of Streptococcus mutans and their metabolites on the wear behavior of dental restorative materials.

The wear behavior of dental restorative materials is highly related to the biolubricating medium in the oral environment. Bacteria, along with their metabolic products, are essential substances in the oral cavity and have not been studied as a potential factor affecting lubrication performance during mastication. In this study, the effects of the Streptococcus mutans bacterial cells and their metabolites were investigated on the wear behavior of resin composites, polymer-infiltrated ceramic networks and zirconium-lithium silicate glass-ceramics. A reciprocating friction test and quantitative a

Interventions for tooth wear - is there a 'best' way?

Tooth wear is an increasingly common issue that presents many challenges to the clinician. External drivers to patient demand lead to challenges in management - from initial diagnosis to approaches for management. There are a multitude of options available for managing tooth wear, from simple supervision and removal of causative factors to extensive intervention with adhesive restorations, or the use of multiple extra-coronal restorations. Opinions are varied, sometimes vigorously promoted, and may be controversial. The question many might wish answered however is - 'is there a best way?' Ther

Progressive Tooth Wear Against Resin-Based Restorative Composites.

PURPOSE: The composition and properties of resin-based composite materials could affect tooth wear and lead to clinical problems. Therefore, the study objective was to characterize human tooth wear behavior against a bulk-fill restorative (BF) compared to a conventional resin composite (RC) and a CAD/CAM resin nano ceramic (RN). METHODS: Square-shaped specimens of each material were prepared and sub-divided according to the number of testing cycles (n=8): 100,000, 250,000, and 500,000 cycles. An occlusal wear test was performed using a chewing machine with 49 N, 2 Hz, in 37°C distilled water.

Rehabilitation of the worn dentition with glass-ceramic restorations.

Severe pathologic tooth wear is perceived internationally as an increasing problem based on growing evidence of risks associated with dental hard tissue damage due to erosion, attrition, and abrasion. The defect morphology of these wear-related lesions is different from that of caries lesions. Modern evaluation systems provide detailed quantitative assessment and classification of tooth wear. Against this background, restorative treatment concepts have become significantly more differentiated in recent decades. Direct composite restorations might be preferred for smaller defects and younger pa

The role of orthodontics in the management of tooth wear.

Pathological tooth wear is a dental problem that affects all age groups and appears to be increasing in prevalence. A subset of these patients may benefit from a combination of orthodontic and restorative care which will be discussed in this article. Orthodontics can help to create the necessary vertical, anterior-posterior and mesio-distal space for restorative work, reducing the need for tooth reduction and lessening the biological costs of restorative care, helping to reposition the gingival margins where this impacts upon aesthetics, as well as correcting co-existing malocclusion.

Bilaminate approaches and V-shaped and 360-degree veneers. Different adhesive restoration methods in the treatment of severe anterior wear: Part 2.

The introduction of adhesive techniques has shifted dental restoration toward highly conservative strategies, emphasizing preservation of natural tooth structure to maintain oral health and reduce future interventions. In managing dental wear, additive methods offer predictable outcomes while safeguarding the longevity of restored teeth. Direct restorations are suitable for minor to moderate lesions due to their reversibility and cost-effectiveness, whereas deeper or functionally and esthetically significant defects often require indirect solutions. Multidisciplinary esthetic rehabilitation in a patient with worn dentition. Hybrid restorative treatment with over 3 years' follow-up.

Restorative clinicians frequently encounter difficulties when managing patients with worn dentition. Diagnosis and treatment planning for these cases necessitate a comprehensive assessment of multiple factors such as causative factors, esthetic concerns, arch alignment, and functionality, but also prognosis, preventive measures, and long-term follow-up. Although significant progress has been made in contemporary dentistry in terms of prevention, periodontal maintenance, and preservation of natural teeth, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of patients suffering from tooth wear. Management of localized anterior tooth wear: a minimally invasive approach using the Dahl concept.

The Dahl concept has been widely recognized and applied in the management of localized anterior tooth wear for several decades, although its clinical implementation remains a topic of ongoing discussion. This case report describes a practical application of the Dahl concept in a patient presenting with severe wear of the lower anterior teeth, accompanied by reversible pulpitis. The report outlines a minimally invasive restorative strategy, guided by the principles of the Dahl concept, using composite resin to achieve occlusal elevation. This approach avoids extensive tooth reduction or the nee

Location of the Wear, Interdisciplinary Workflow and Therapeutic Approach for Tooth Wear: LIT Classification.

OBJECTIVE: This article presents a guide for the rehabilitation of patients with dental wear using a minimally invasive approach. It provides a structured treatment sequence based on the location and extent of wear, the disciplines involved, and the therapeutic approach. The LIT classification establishes a relationship between the magnitude of the lesion and the appropriate type and material of restoration. OVERVIEW: Tooth wear (TW) is a progressive, non-carious loss of dental structure caused by erosion, attrition, and abrasion, commonly affecting young patients. Its multifactorial origin a
