CJD: update for dental staff.

UNLABELLED: It is almost a decade since the recognition of the emergence of a new infectious disease termed variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) caused by prions (PrPTSE), abnormal variants of a normal human cell surface protein (PrP). This disease has a number of similarities to other forms of CJD--lethal disorders characterized by a prolonged incubation period, and progressive mental deterioration. In relation to oral tissues, PrPTSE have been found in neural, gingival, pulpal, lingual, lymphoreticular and salivary gland tissue in animal models. In both sporadic and variant CJD, PrPTSE i

[Considerations on vaccinations for the dental staff].

In this article the available vaccinations in the Netherlands that might be of value to dentistry are discussed. This in view of protection of both the patient and the medical worker. Furthermore vaccines that are necessary but do not exist or have not been developed yet, are mentioned. Of the available vaccinations, the one against hepatitis B is of the utmost importance. This has been stressed in the Netherlands from all sides for a long time already; nonetheless not all dental workers have been vaccinated up until now. The vaccines against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and viral hepati

Mini dental assessment: a simple screening test for non-dental staff.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop a simple tool for the assessment of possible dental treatment needs (DTN) for non-dental professionals (Mini Dental Assessment, MDA). To keep the assessment universal, we aimed to base it on the patient's history and a simple chewing efficiency test (CET) as the dental status is a known determinant for chewing efficiency. MATERIALS & METHODS: The assessment was developed using data from 169 patients from two sites (University Hospital Giessen, St. Bonifatius Hospital Lingen, both Germany). In all patients, a dental examination was performe

Patch test results in dental staff with dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Dental workers are exposed to allergenic materials in the workplace. OBJECTIVES: To summarize patch test results in dental staff with work-related dermatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study of dental staff with dermatitis was conducted. Symptoms, clinical findings and results from patch tests with 40 dental allergens were summarized. RESULTS: Of 329 participants, 155 (47.1%) had at least one positive patch reaction. The highest frequency of positive reactions was observed for metals (38.6%), acrylics (7.3%) and additives in acrylic resins (3.6%). One hundred and ei

Screening of dental staff nurses for noise induced hearing loss.

PROBLEMS/OBJECTIVES: The effect of noise on employees of dental clinics is debatable. The purposes of this study were to determine the intensity and frequency components of dental instruments used by dental staff nurses and the prevalence of noise induced hearing loss. METHODOLOGY: We performed a comparative, cross sectional study on a group of dental staff nurses. Participants underwent ear examination followed by pure tone audiometry. Pure tone audiometry was performed at least 48 hours after the participants were free from noise exposure. Noise induced hearing loss was defined as failed de

Investigation of Vitamin D levels in medical staff in a dental clinic.

AIMS: Recently, Vitamin D deficiency is pandemic now. The main reason of vitamin D deficiency is inadequate exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D level in nutrients is low and it can be ineffective to meet the daily requirements. Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin by ultraviolent radiation. In the present study, the authors aimed to investigate serum 25(OH) D levels of the medical staff working in different positions in the Faculty of Dentistry. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 51 dentists, 28 dental assistants, 11 secretaries, and 10 nurses working in the Faculty of Dentistry, Erciyes University

[New dental materials a health risk for dental staff. Acrylates can cause contact allergy and other problems].

The acrylic content of modern dental materials poses a risk of adverse reactions. Although the quantities of the substances released are normally too small to cause systemic reactions, local reactions may occur resulting in damage to the skin. A study, in which 81 dental workers referred to dermatologists for a variety of adverse reactions were patch tested, showed work-related dermatoses to represent a serious problem for dental staff, sometimes entailing occupational disability and re-schooling. Much of this could be avoided by observing special precautions to prevent direct contact with the

Dental staff and patient attitudes about nicotine replacement therapy samples in dental care: A National Dental Practice-Based Research Network study.

OBJECTIVES: Cigarette smoking negatively affects oral health. Nicotine replacement therapies (NRT; e.g. nicotine patch or lozenge) and brief interventions (e.g. Ask-Advise-Refer; AAR) can improve cessation outcomes but are underutilized. NRT sampling (NRTS) increases NRT utilization by providing patients with samples of NRT as part of routine healthcare. Ask-Advise-Refer is a brief intervention where practitioners: ask patients about tobacco use, advise those using tobacco to quit and refer to the state quit line. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore dental care practitioners

Mercury accumulation in tissues from dental staff and controls in relation to exposure.

Samples, mainly from occipital cortex and pituitary gland, but also from rental cortex, olfactory bulbs, thyroid gland and liver were collected from autopsies of 8 dental staff cases and 27 controls. These samples were analysed for total mercury content using radiochemical neutron activation analyses. The results revealed high mercury concentrations (median 815, range 135-4,040 micrograms Hg/kg wet weight) in pituitaries from the dental staff cases compared to controls (N = 23, median 23 range 6-1, 170 micrograms Hg/kg). In occipital cortex, the cases had a median of 17, range of 4-300 microgr

SARS-CoV-2 Seropositivity among Dental Staff and the Role of Aspirating Systems.

INTRODUCTION: Health care workers (HCWs) are at a high risk of infection owing to occupational exposure to patients and virus-contaminated surfaces. OBJECTIVES: The study was aimed to reveal and compare the seroprevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection among patient-facing HCWs across 3 dental clinics equipped with different types of aspirating systems. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 157 HCWs (43.58 ± 1.66 y) from 3 dental clinics in Ekaterinburg (Russian Federation) who reported to work during the coronavirus disease pandemic. Mercury and selenium concentrations and their interrelations in organs from dental staff and the general population.

Mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) concentrations were determined by radiochemical neutron activation analysis in samples from the pituitary glands, occipital cortices, renal cortices, abdominal muscles, and thyroid glands of cadavers. Samples were retrieved from dental staff occupationally exposed to Hg and from the general population. Increased concentrations of both Hg and Se in samples from dental staff showed that Se accumulated together with Hg. Regression analysis of data from the pituitary glands and occipital cortices of dental staff indicated the accumulation of Se at a rough stoichiomet

Acceptance of Staff and Students of a Private Dental College for a Novel Diagnostic Tool to Replace the Dental Probe: A Cross-sectional Study.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: The dental probe is a commonly used instrument for the visuotactile examination of teeth in the diagnosis of caries, periodontal conditions, etc., and also for the removal of debris. Due to its sharp end and invasive nature, its use is controversial in children. A study was conducted to assess the acceptance of dental college staff and students for a novel diagnostic tool to replace the dental probe. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was developed and validated to record the responses pertaining to several considerations for the replacement of the dental probe and acc
