Dentine permeability and its role in the pathobiology of dentine sensitivity.

The classical hydrodynamic theory implicated fluid movement as a transducing mechanism in the production of dental sensitivity. This theory assumes that sensitive dentine must be permeable. Various measurements of dentine permeability are discussed, including: (1) factors that influence diffusive permeation across dentine; (2) factors that influence convective fluid movement across dentine; (3) osmotic activities of solutions; (4) comparison of evaporative and convective fluid movement; (5) the interaction between outward convective fluid flux on the inward diffusive flux of molecules; and (6)

Dentin permeability of carious primary teeth.

BACKGROUND: Many in vitro studies have used dentine permeability to evaluate the efficacy of various restorative and preventative procedures. The easiest way to evaluate dentine permeability is to calculate its hydraulic conductance (Lp) using fluid filtration methods. Research has examined electronic hydraulic conductance measurement methods that give more precise and reliable results for the permeability of dentine than the classical method. To our knowledge, no study has examined the dentine permeability of carious primary teeth. AIM: This in vitro study determined the dentine permeability

Effects of two disinfection/sterilization methods for dentin specimens on dentin permeability.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of two disinfection/sterilization methods on the permeability of dentin specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty intact human third molars were freshly extracted and cut, close to the pulp chamber, into dentin disks with a 500-μm thickness. The disks were randomized (n = 20 each) into a 70% ethanol group (acid-etched dentin disks soaked in 70% ethanol for 15 min) and a steam autoclaving group (acid-etched dentin disks autoclaved for 25 min). The permeability (Lp) of each dentin disk was measured before and after either treatment using a hydraulic device,

Dentin-predentin complex and its permeability: physiologic overview.

The major channels for solute diffusion across dentin are the dentinal tubules. Since dentin permeation is proportional to the product of tubule number and diameter, both of which increase as the tubules converge on the pulp, we find that dentin permeability increases rapidly as the pulp chamber is approached. The presence of a smear layer of cutting debris on top of cut dentin decreases dentin permeability, especially when permeability is measured by fluid filtration. Further, intratubular material--such as mineral deposits, collagen fibrils, proteoglycan linings, bacteria, etc.--can greatly

In vitro permeability of furcation dentin in permanent teeth.

Extracted unerupted permanent third molars with the occlusal half of the crown and apical half of the roots removed were cemented to Plexiglas blocks. Using a positive pressure system in which the movement of fluid across the dental tubules could be measured, the permeability of furcation dentin was measured before and after alteration of the furcation thickness. Subsequently, measurements of reduction in thickness of cementum and dentin were performed. Furcation dentin permeability was found to increase as the cementum and dentin thickness was reduced and the smear layer removed. The permeabi

Effects of fibrinogen in vivo on dentine permeability in the dog.

Dentine permeability measurements were made each hour for 6 h in tooth cavities prepared in control dogs or dogs which had been pretreated with a purified fraction of snake venom to deplete their plasma of fibrinogen. The control dogs exhibited a progressive fall in dentine permeability (approximately 50 per cent reduction in 6 h); the permeability in the fibrinogen-depleted dogs only fell 15 per cent in 6 h. The results implicate plasma proteins, particularly high molecular-weight proteins such as fibrinogen, as agents which reduce dentine permeability in vivo.

Effect of bleaching agents on dentin permeability to Streptococcus faecalis.

Bacterial contamination of dentin may be a contributing factor in the development of bleaching-associated root resorption. In this study, the effect of commonly used bleaching agents on the permeability of dentin tubules to Streptococcus faecalis was evaluated. Sixty extracted bovine incisors were horizontally sectioned apically to the cementoenamel junction. In each tooth, a standard cavity was prepared, the pulp tissue extirpated, and remnants of soft tissue and smear layer were removed. Following rinsing and repeated autoclave sterilization, the teeth were divided into four groups, each tre

Dentin-predentin complex and its permeability: pathology and treatment overview.

This review paper focuses attention on tissue changes which may take place in dentin and on localized alterations in tissue formation in the predentin area. A number of reaction patterns has been described in dentin affecting both the inorganic and organic components. Dentinal tubules may become partly or completely obturated by growth of the peritubular dentin. Precipitation of mineral salts within the tubules, which may be a reprecipitation of minerals from adjacent demineralized dentin, represents a fundamentally different mode of obturation of dentinal tubules. Initially, demineralization

Permeability and morphology of dentin after erosion induced by acidic drinks.

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to evaluate 1) the alterations of dentin permeability after single exposure of dentin to several acidic soft drinks with different acid composition; 2) the effectiveness of smear layer on dentin surface to prevent erosion of sound dentin; and 3) the role of brushing procedures. METHODS: Dentin discs from human third molars were prepared. Each disc was treated with 0.5 M neutral EDTA for 5 minutes to remove the smear layer and to calculate the maximum fluid flow rate for each disc (to which an arbitrary value of 100% was assigned) using a pressure appara

Extracellular fluid movement in the pulp; the pulp/dentin permeability barrier.

Fluid movement in the pulp depends largely upon the physiology of the blood vessels; normally there is a net efflux of fluid and proteins from the capillaries into the extracellular environment. Most pulp capillaries lie close to the odontoblast layer and in order to see whether fluid can pass between the odontoblasts into the predentin we have perfused the vessels of molar tooth germs in anesthetized piglets with the electron dense tracer lanthanum. The results show that the tracer permeates the capillaries but encounters a barrier to permeability at the apical (predentinal) ends of the odont

Effects of Nd:YAG laser on the permeability of root canal wall dentin.

The effects of a thermally cooled pulsed Nd:YAG laser on the permeability and structural appearance of the root canal wall were investigated in vitro. Twenty specimens of freshly extracted human teeth were prepared by conventional methods. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 teeth were prepared conventionally but not lased. Group 2 specimens received three 15-s laser exposures totaling 45 s duration within the root canal via optical fiber delivery. Laser parameters were set at 5 W, 50 Hz, using a simultaneous air/water coolant spray of 10 psi air and 2 psi water. The exter

Influence of sodium hypochlorite on the permeability and structure of cervical human dentine.

The effect of 5% sodium hypochlorite and 35% hydrogen peroxide on dentine samples in vitro was investigated. It was demonstrated that both 5% NaOCl and 35% H2O2 depletes the dentine, which can be recorded as weight loss. Sodium hypochlorite removes approximately 14% of dry weight from dentine samples in 24 h; hydrogen peroxide is half as destructive. The hydraulic conductance (Lp) of dentine after treatment with NaOCl is increased over 100%. It is suggested that the use of high concentrations of sodium hypochlorite during root canal treatment may negatively affect the integrity of the root can

Effect of hydroxyapatite film formed by powder jet deposition on dentin permeability.

A powder jet deposition (PJD) process can be used to create a thick hydroxyapatite (HA) film on the surface of a human tooth. This study aimed to investigate in vitro the ability of an HA film, applied using PJD, to diminish dentin permeability. Discs of human coronal dentin were cut perpendicular to the tooth axis and the smear layer was removed by EDTA treatment. The HA film was created by accelerating HA particles, calcinated at 1200°C, onto the dentin discs at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The surfaces and cross-sections of the HA PJD-treated samples were observed using scanni
