Adhesive bonding of various materials to hard tooth tissues--solubility of dentinal smear layer in dilute acid buffers.

While the acid etch technique has largely solved the problem of bonding restorative materials to enamel, attempts to improve adhesive bonding to dentin have so far had only limited success. One aspect to which insufficient attention has been paid is the presence of a smear layer on cut surfaces and of pellicle on surfaces exposed to saliva, both of which would reduce or prevent durable adhesive bonds. The present study attempts to evaluate the usefulness of various acidic solutions in removing these surface layers while causing minimal damage to the vital contents of the dentinal tubules. A se

Influence of substrate nature and immobilization of implanted dentin matrix components during induction of reparative dentinogenesis.

The biological effects of isolated soluble dentin extracellular matrix components on the induction of reparative dentinogenesis in exposed cavities in ferret canine teeth have been shown to be blocked by immobilizing the extracellular matrix components on nitrocellulose or Millipore membranes during implantation. This contrasts with the picture of induction of odontoblast-like cell differentiation and reparative dentin deposition on existing insoluble dentin matrix of the exposure walls when the extracellular matrix components are implanted in lyophilized form. These data indicate the importan

Effect of niobium pentoxide incorporated calcium hydroxide as an intracanal medicament on fracture resistance of root canal dentin.

CONTEXT: Despite its outstanding properties, extended use of calcium hydroxide (CH) causes a reduction in dentin strength, increasing the tooth's vulnerability to fracture. AIM: This in vitro study aimed to compare and assess the fracture resistance (FR) of root dentin when CH with and without the addition of niobium pentoxide (NP) was used as an intracanal medicament (ICM) and its solubility over a period of time. METHODOLOGY: Eighty teeth with single roots were decoronated, instrumented with Protaper till F3. The teeth were randomly divided into baseline (n = 5), without medicament, CH, an

Bond strength and solubility of a novel polydimethylsiloxane-gutta-percha calcium silicate-containing root canal sealer.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic sealers are essential for sealing gutta-percha to the dentin walls. They help to ensure that the canal remains free of microorganisms which might lead to infection. In order to perform their intended function, the sealers should properly adhere to the dentin walls and remain insoluble when set in the canal. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength and solubility of a novel polydimethylsiloxane-gutta-percha calcium silicate-containing root canal sealer (GuttaFlow® bioseal) and compare it with the zinc oxide and eugenol sealer (Zical®). In situ fluoride retention in enamel and dentine after the use of an amine fluoride dentifrice and amine fluoride/sodium fluoride mouthrinse.

The aim of this in situ investigation was to study the effect of an amine fluoride/sodium fluoride mouthrinse (total F = 250 ppm) in addition to an amine fluoride dentifrice (F = 1,250 ppm) on the amount of acquired fluoride in enamel and dentine. In the partial prosthesis of 12 participants a combined specimen of slightly demineralized enamel and dentine was placed. During two consecutive experiments, each lasting 3 weeks, the participants used an amine fluoride dentifrice alone or in combination with a fluoride mouthrinse. After the in situ period the specimens were retrieved and both the en

Scanning electron microscopic description of cellular activity and mineral changes in feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions.

The cellular activity and changes in mineral composition of dental tissues involved in feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions were investigated. Teeth with at least 1 lesion (n = 10) were extracted from 10 different cats that were presented primarily for chronic gingivostomatitis and/or severe periodontal disease. Scanning electron microscopic methods were used to determine the presence of resorptive cells in 8 teeth while 2 teeth were evaluated for pathologic changes in dental mineral composition. Observations were complicated by the presence of organic wear on the dental surfaces, however r

Micromorphologic features of cervical erosion after acid conditioning and its relation with composite resin.

The dentin surface in cervical erosion appears relatively smooth with evidence of intratubular deposits. After acid conditioning, the tubules are made patent though some still contain relatively less soluble intratubular contents. Resin applied to acid-conditioned, eroded dentin penetrated approximately 30 micrometers compared to more than 100 micrometers into the tubules of similarly treated normal dentin.
