Bimaxillary osteotomies in correction of dentofacial deformities.

In 342 patients with dentofacial deformities cephalometric analyses were preoperatively performed. A study of occlusion on cast models as the simulated new position of the facial soft tissues was done on the photographs. Surgical treatment using bimaxillary osteotomies for correction of dentofacial deformities was done in 38 patients: 31 with prognathism and maxillary hypoplasia, 5 with facial asymmetry and laterognathism and in 2 with otomandibular dysostosis. The LeFort I type osteotomy was used for the upper jaw and Obwegeser technique for the lower jaw. Intermaxillary and circumzygomatic i

Orthognathic surgery: the correction of dentofacial deformities.

The field of orthognathic surgery offers ever-improving technology to better rehabilitate patients with dentofacial deformities. Hospital stays have been reduced due to improved surgery and anesthesia. Rigid internal fixation has increased comfort for many patients by eliminating the inconvenience of having the jaws wired together. Most important has been the realization that teamwork between the general dentist and the various specialty disciplines is indispensable for good patient care and the attainment of the very best results.

Distraction osteogenesis in the treatment of dentofacial deformities.

Distraction osteogenesis (DO) is a major surgical technique that promotes new bone formation. It was first developed in the long bones and has now been applied to the facial bones. McCarthy et al. were the first to apply the procedure to the human mandible. The early uses in craniofacial surgery and orthognathic surgery were with extraoral appliances and therefore had limited appeal to many patients other than those with severe craniofacial anomalies, such as hemifacial microsomia. This changed with the introduction of intraoral appliances. Since that time, the use of DO has expanded to applic

Analysis of 300 dentofacial deformities in Hong Kong.

The records of 300 consecutive Chinese patients with a dentofacial deformity were reviewed to determine the spectrum and characteristics of deformities presenting to a university joint orthognathic clinic. Twenty-six percent of the patients had cleft lip and palate with maxillary hypoplasia; within this group, 26% had double jaw deformity and 5% had nasomaxillary hypoplasia. Of the noncleft group, 47% were Class III facial types, of which 59% were due to mandibular hyperplasia. Of the noncleft group, facial asymmetry accounted for 21%, long face for 18%, bimaxillary protrusion for 14%, Class I

Treatment of dentofacial deformities secondary to condylar hyperplasia.

Dentofacial deformities secondary to condylar hyperplasiais a kind of disease presenting facial asymmetry, malocclusion, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and other symptoms caused by non-neoplastic hyperplasia of the condyle. The etiology is still unknown, and currently, pre- and post-operative orthodontics accompanied by orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery and jawbone contouring surgery are the main treatment methods. A personalized treatment plan was developed, considering the active degree of condyle hyperplasia, the severity of the jaw deformity, and the patient's wil

Asymmetric Class III dentofacial deformities--widening the horizon.

This article presents insight into the different types of asymmetrical Class III dentofacial deformities, their diagnoses, and the treatment modalities adopted by orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons. In diagnosing facial and dental asymmetries, a thorough clinical examination and radiographic survey are necessary to determine the extent of the soft tissue, skeletal, dental, and functional involvement. The management of three cases of asymmetrical Class III dentofacial deformities is described. The optimal esthetic results and functional outcomes in the cases outlined were achieved by vert

Individualized Surgical Orthodontic Rehabilitation of Class III Dentofacial Deformities.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of Class III dentofacial deformities present a complex clinical challenge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article demonstrates the successful surgical-orthodontic rehabilitation of two patients with skeletal Class III deformities. Meticulously planned and well-executed conventional combination of presurgical orthodontics, orthognathic surgery and postsurgical orthodontic therapy helped optimally achieve an aesthetic facial profile, pleasing smile and well-interdigitated occlusion. RESULTS: The results showed excellent stability at 3-year follow-up in both cases. DISCUSS

TMJ Position in Symmetric Dentofacial Deformity.

The aim of this research was to analyze the facial class, presence of malocclusion, and the mandibular plane and to relate this to the mandibular condyle position. A cross-sectional study in subjects under analysis for orthognathic surgery was done. The mandibular plane, the gonial angle, and the molar class were included to compare the coronal and sagittal position of the condyle and the joint space observed in the CBCT. The measurements were obtained by the same observer at an interval of two weeks. In addition, the Spearman test was performed to determine the correlation using a p value < 0

Masticatory function and temporomandibular disorders in patients with dentofacial deformities.

About 30% of individuals in the Swedish population will at some stage during life have treatment with orthodontic appliances. In more severe cases, when orthodontic treatment is not considered sufficient enough to correct the malocclusion, the orthodontic treatment is combined with orthognathic surgery. For these cases, a satisfying jaw relation is achieved by surgically moving the maxilla and/or the mandible into a pre-planned position. Patients due to be treated with orthognathic surgery often suffer from an impaired masticatory function, symptoms from the masticatory muscles or temporomandi

Reduction cheiloplasty: its role in the correction of dentofacial deformities.

The presence of prominent lips is common in individuals with various dentofacial and craniofacial deformities. The aetiology must be diagnosed to differentiate between pseudo-macrochelia and true macrocheilia. When considering surgical correction of the prominent lip, a precise description of the location and the magnitude of the deformity is required. With careful treatment planning, proper sequencing of the treatment, and a good understanding of the various surgical techniques, optimum results can be achieved. These aspects will be discussed in detail illustrated with appropriate cases.
