Systematic classification differences across eye movement detection algorithms.

Eye movement (EM) detection is a critical step in most eye-tracking (ET) research, typically relying on detectors-specialized algorithms designed to segment raw ET data into discrete oculomotor events. However, variability in detection algorithms and the lack of standardized evaluation frameworks hinder transparency and reproducibility across studies. In this work, we introduce pEYES, an open-source toolkit designed to streamline EM detection and enable robust, quantitative comparisons between detectors. The toolkit provides implementations for several widely used threshold-based detectors, al

(IoT) Network intrusion detection system using optimization algorithms.

To address the complex requirements of network intrusion detection in IoT environments, this study proposes a hybrid intelligent framework that integrates the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm-referred to as WOA-GWO. This framework leverages a cooperative mechanism to balance global exploration and local exploitation capabilities. WOA's spiral bubble-net search strategy endows the model with efficient global optimization in large-scale feature spaces, while GWO's hunting behavior, based on a social hierarchy, enhances fine-tuned optimization in k

Trip Detection Algorithms for Healthy and Amputee Individuals.

Amputation disrupts normal gait biomechanics, reducing strength, balance, and toe clearance. These factors contribute to an increase in falls in amputees, leading to both physical injury and psychological burden. Powered and microprocessor prosthetic legs can potentially react to external perturbations, but fast and reliable perturbation detection algorithms are needed. We developed three different algorithms for trip detection, each based on a different approach: thresholds, machine learning, or anomaly detection. Each trip detection method was validated offline with data acquired from 17 hea

Detection of ankle fractures using deep learning algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Early and accurate detection of ankle fractures are crucial for optimizing treatment and thus reducing future complications. Radiographs are the most abundant imaging techniques for assessing fractures. Deep learning (DL) methods, through adequately trained deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs), have been previously shown to faster and accurately analyze radiographic images without human intervention. Herein, we aimed to assess the performance of two different DCNNs in detecting ankle fractures using radiographs compared to the ground truth. METHODS: In this retrospective cas

Automated detection of celiac disease using Machine Learning Algorithms.

Celiac disease is a disorder of the immune system that mainly affects the small intestine but can also affect the skeletal system. The diagnosis relies on histological assessment of duodenal biopsies acquired by upper digestive endoscopy. Immunological tests involve collecting a blood sample to detect if the antibodies have been produced in the body. Endoscopy is invasive and histology is time-consuming. In recent years there have been various algorithms that use artificial intelligence (AI) and neural convolutions (CNN, Convolutional Neural Network) to process images from capsule endoscopy, a

Benchmark of EEG-based seizure detection algorithms with SzCORE.

EEG monitoring needs reliable automated seizure detection solutions to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. Many reviews have attempted to catalog and summarize key studies to provide a clear overview of current advances in algorithm development. However, a recurring issue in these reviews is that the field suffers from a lack of standardization in evaluation methodologies and performance metrics, making direct comparisons between algorithms extremely difficult. This work addresses this challenge by providing a fair & transparent comparison review of state-of-the-art seizure detecti

Evaluation of Automated Object-Detection Algorithms for Koala Detection in Infrared Aerial Imagery.

Effective detection techniques are important for wildlife monitoring and conservation applications and are especially helpful for species that live in complex environments, such as arboreal animals like koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus). The implementation of infrared cameras and drones has demonstrated encouraging outcomes, regardless of whether the detection was performed by human observers or automated algorithms. In the case of koala detection in eucalyptus plantations, there is a risk to spotters during forestry operations. In addition, fatigue and tedium associated with the difficult and r

Morphological detection algorithms for the automatic implantable cardioverter/defibrillator (AICD).

To prevent sudden cardiac death of patients who are at risk from long standing tachyarrhythmia the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is the first choice therapy. ICDs use a range of electrostimuli up to defibrillation, which is a non synchronous high energy shock, whereas cardioversion is synchronous with the ECG. In order to know when and how to react, a detection algorithm, which analyses an intracardial electrocardiogram (ECG) and classifies the heart rhythm, is implemented in every ICD. All detection algorithms use the heart rate to classify the different heart rhythms roughly.

Improved Alzheimer's Disease Detection by MRI Using Multimodal Machine Learning Algorithms.

Adult-onset dementia disorders represent a challenge for modern medicine. Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents the most diffused form of adult-onset dementias. For half a century, the diagnosis of AD was based on clinical and exclusion criteria, with an accuracy of 85%, which did not allow for a definitive diagnosis, which could only be confirmed by post-mortem evaluation. Machine learning research applied to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques can contribute to a faster diagnosis of AD and may contribute to predicting the evolution of the disease. It was also possible to predict indivi

Sensors and algorithms for locomotion intention detection of lower limb exoskeletons.

In recent years, lower limb exoskeletons (LLEs) have received much attention due to the potential to help people with paraplegia regain the ability of upright-legged locomotion. However, one major hindrance to converting prototypes into actual products is the lack of a balance recovery function. Locomotion intentions can be the first step for balance assistance. Therefore, its significance continues to grow. Many researchers focus on this topic, but there is a lack of a general discussion on the research phenomenon. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to systematize these data and benefit f

Automated urinary sediment detection for Fabry disease using deep-learning algorithms.

UNLABELLED: Fabry disease is a congenital lysosomal storage disease, and most of these cases develop organ damage in middle age. There are some promising therapeutic options for this disorder, which can stabilize the progression of the disease. However, a long delay in diagnosis prevents early intervention, resulting in treatment failure. Because Fabry disease is a rare disease, it is not well recognized and disease specific screening tests are rarely performed. Hence, a novel approach to for detecting patients with a widely practiced clinical test is crucial for the early detection of the dis

Comparison of Ultrasound Image Classifier Deep Learning Algorithms for Shrapnel Detection.

Ultrasound imaging is essential in emergency medicine and combat casualty care, oftentimes used as a critical triage tool. However, identifying injuries, such as shrapnel embedded in tissue or a pneumothorax, can be challenging without extensive ultrasonography training, which may not be available in prolonged field care or emergency medicine scenarios. Artificial intelligence can simplify this by automating image interpretation but only if it can be deployed for use in real time. We previously developed a deep learning neural network model specifically designed to identify shrapnel in ultraso

Detection of arterial pressure waveform error using machine learning trained algorithms.

In critically ill and high-risk surgical room patients, an invasive arterial catheter is often inserted to continuously measure arterial pressure (AP). The arterial waveform pressure measurement, however, may be compromised by damping or inappropriate reference placement of the pressure transducer. Clinicians, decision support systems, or closed-loop applications that rely on such information would benefit from the ability to detect error from the waveform alone. In the present study we hypothesized that machine-learning trained algorithms could discriminate three types of transducer error fro

Chemical Sensor Systems and Associated Algorithms for Fire Detection: A Review.

Indoor fire detection using gas chemical sensing has been a subject of investigation since the early nineties. This approach leverages the fact that, for certain types of fire, chemical volatiles appear before smoke particles do. Hence, systems based on chemical sensing can provide faster fire alarm responses than conventional smoke-based fire detectors. Moreover, since it is known that most casualties in fires are produced from toxic emissions rather than actual burns, gas-based fire detection could provide an additional level of safety to building occupants. In this line, since the 2000s, el
