Learning disabilities: Developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a developmental learning disability that manifests as a persistent difficulty in comprehending even the most basic numeric and arithmetic concepts, despite normal intelligence and schooling opportunities. Given the predominant use of numbers in modern society, this condition can pose major challenges in the sufferer's everyday life, both in personal and professional development. Since, to date, we still lack a universally recognized and psychometrically driven definition of DD, its diagnosis has been applied to a wide variety of cognitive profiles. In this cha

Prevention of developmental disabilities.

People with developmental disabilities have problems with major life activities such as language, mobility, learning, self-help, and independent living. Developmental disabilities begin anytime during development upto 22 years of age and usually last throughout a person's lifetime. It reflects the person's need for a combination and sequence of special interdisciplinary or generic care, treatment or other services that are of life-long or extended duration and that are individually planned and coordinated. They currently represent a large proportion of the childhood illnesses and disorders. Th

Arithmetic in developmental cognitive disabilities.

This paper reviews and discusses research on arithmetical strengths and weaknesses in children with specific developmental cognitive disabilities. It focusses on children with dyslexia, developmental language disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism. In general, studies show that arithmetical weaknesses are commoner in children with any of these disorders than in controls. Autism is sometimes associated with specific strengths in arithmetic; but even in autism, it is commoner for arithmetic to be a relative weakness than a relative strength. There may be some genetic reaso

Prescriptions for Antipsychotics: Youth with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities Compared to Youth without Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare antipsychotic use by youth with intellectual/developmental disabilities to youth without IDD as they transitioned from pediatric to adult health care services. In addition, antipsychotic use was compared between youth with different types of IDD (autism, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Down syndrome and 'other'). METHODS: Population level administrative health data was used to compare the dispensing of antipsychotics for youth aged 15 to 24 years with and without IDD, between 2010 and 2019. Because antipsychotics are associated with metabolic syndrome

Macrocephaly in children with developmental disabilities.

In a community-based study of 4,309 children with neurodevelopmental disabilities who were referred to the Institute for Child Development, Tel Aviv, Israel, 62 (1.4%) had macrocephaly (head circumference above the ninety-eighth percentile for age), of whom 42 (1%) had macrocephaly not associated with hydrocephalus. With the exception of neonatal respiratory distress the incidence of perinatal complications was not different from that in other children referred to the Institute for Child Development. In children with developmental disabilities, macrocephaly was a significant risk factor for fe

Hormonal influences in developmental learning disabilities.

Developmental language and learning disabilities in children can take many different forms and can result from a variety of causes. Research to date has focused primarily on specific disabilities in learning, which are characterized by a significant delay or disorder in one aspect of learning against a background of otherwise normal development. Learning disabilities affecting language and/or reading acquisition (developmental dysphasia and dyslexia) have been studied most thoroughly. Verbal learning disabilities occur more frequently in boys than in girls, and there is a higher than expected

Pediatric practitioners' knowledge of developmental disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to assess the level of knowledge and attitudes of pediatric practitioners about developmental disabilities and compare their level to the performance of pediatric residents before and after a 1-month rotation about developmental disabilities. The level of knowledge was measured using a 50-question multiple choice examination and the attitudes were measured utilizing a hypothetical question about allocation of funds, a scale which measured prognostic abilities about mental function and the Attitude Towards Disabled Persons Scale. The results showed that the practit

Primary care approaches to developmental disabilities.

Ninety-seven board certified pediatricians who spend at least 75% of their professional working hours involved in the delivery of primary care in New England were interviewed to explore their attitudes and current clinical approaches to developmental disabilities. The majority of the pediatricians relied exclusively on clinical judgment and general observations for assessing developmental problems in their offices. Responsibility for preschool screening for potential learning problems and the assessment of school failure were considered appropriate pediatric concerns. Reported customary approa

Population Level Mental Health Diagnoses for Youth with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities Compared to Youth without Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities.

There is evidence in the literature that youth with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) experience mental health issues to a greater extent compared to youth without IDD. In addition, transition from pediatric to adult services may be a period of increased anxiety and mental health problems for these youth. This study used a retrospective cohort design using population level administrative health data to compare mental health diagnoses between youth with IDD and youth without IDD; particularly examining the period when youth transition from pediatric health services to adult health s

Developmental influences in teaching language forms to individuals with developmental disabilities.

The purpose of this experiment was to test the assumption that the sequencing of language goals for individuals with developmental disabilities should be based on the normal developmental sequence. In a series of two studies, phonetic sounds and syntactic structures representing different levels of normal development were taught to individuals with developmental disabilities. The results showed that (a) the majority of earlier emerging forms were acquired in fewer trials, (b) there was never an instance when the later emerging form was acquired and the earlier emerging form was not, and (c) th

Standing for Those With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities.

It is time for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD), their families, the village that supports them, and the healthcare professionals that are responsible for their well-being to grab their pitchforks and storm the castle to end the purposeful exclusion by our government to designate them a medically underserved population (MUP). We (the authors) define IDD as people having a diagnosis of autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and hundreds of other genetic syndromes.

Mastery motivation in toddlers with developmental disabilities.

Prior research on school-age children with mental retardation indicates that they are less motivated on tasks than mental-age-matched peers. In this study, mastery motivation on two tasks was compared for 1- and 2-year-old children with motor impairment (n = 25), developmental delay (n = 25), and typical development (n = 25), matched for mental age. The groups did not differ significantly on any measure of mastery motivation. The relative contribution of premature birth, a history of seizure disorders, severity of cognitive delay, and maternal didactic interaction in predicting mastery motivat

Melatonin Treatment in Children with Developmental Disabilities.

Melatonin is commonly recommended to treat sleep problems in children with developmental disabilities. However, few studies document the efficacy and safety of melatonin in these populations. This article reviews recent studies of melatonin efficacy in developmental disabilities. Overall, short treatment trials were associated with a significant decrease in sleep onset latency time for each of the disorders reviewed, with 1 notable exception-tuberous sclerosis. Reported side effects were uncommon and mild. Across disorders, additional research is needed to draw disability-specific conclusions.

Developmental anomalies and disabilities associated with hypospadias.

PURPOSE: The incidence of developmental anomalies and disabilities associated with hypospadias is still a matter of controversy and data on this issue are sparse. We describe our experience with and evaluation of developmental anomalies and disabilities in a population in which posterior hypospadias was the most common anomaly. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the records of 356 patients who underwent hypospadias repair from January 1986 through April 2000. Collected data included the Barcat classification of the hypospadias anomaly, anatomical penile variants, associated urogenital and ext

Dual diagnoses. Psychiatric disorders in developmental disabilities.

A high prevalence of psychiatric illness exists in persons with mental retardation. Among children with mild to moderate retardation, psychiatric illnesses resemble those seen in the general population. Major affective disorders, ADHD, and conduct disorder are common and respond to the same interventions used in children without mental retardation. Persons with severe to profound retardation are more likely to engage in stereotypies and self-injurious behaviors. In addition, certain specific syndromes associated with mental retardation present with particular neurocognitive, behavioral, and ps

Health care financing for severe developmental disabilities.

The 1985-86 data from 308 children and young adults under age 25 with autism and from 326 with severe or profound mental retardation can be compared to national data from the 1980 MNCUES and the 1987 NMES because the methods are similar. These data provide detailed answers to the questions, what health care services are used? what are the expenses? Who pays them? Until now, the absence of comprehensive national data had hindered the development of new approaches to financing the care of children with serious, lifelong conditions. These data permit policymakers to take into account the needs an

Fetal alcohol. Teratogenic causes of developmental disabilities.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE) are preventable forms of mental retardation and developmental disability caused by heavy prenatal alcohol exposure. Our best evidence of the overall prevalence of FAS is around 1 in 750 live births, but this figure will vary according to the drinking habits of the community and the diagnostic skills and interests of local physicians. It is likely that many infants are born with FAS or FAE, are never recognized as such, and are never properly diagnosed or evaluated. Other diagnoses that are sometimes confused with FAS include Noonan s

Abnormal Developmental Trajectories in the Brain in Individuals With Reading Disability: Developmental changes in reading disability.

It is unknown how the brain supports reading development in individuals with reading disability (RD). In a cross-sectional study (i.e., children, adolescents, adults), we found an age-related shift in brain activation from posterior to anterior part of the left occipitotemporal (OT) area in typical readers, supporting orthographic specialization, while RD readers did not show such a developmental shift. Furthermore, RD readers did not show age-related increase in the left superior temporal gyrus as did the typical readers, suggesting persistent phonological deficits. On the other hand, RD read
