All-Patient Refined Diagnosis-Related Groups in primary arthroplasty.

Our objective was to determine if the All-Patient Refined Diagnosis-Related Groups (APR-DRGs) and other comorbidity scores correlate with pain level, functional abilities, and hospital cost after primary total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Three hundred three patients having TJA were evaluated with average follow-up of 21 months. Western Ontario and McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index, Short-Form 36, and Quality of Well-Being index were administered before and after surgery. The APR-DRG subclassification including severity of illness (SOI) subclass scores and risk of mortality (ROM), Charls

Impact of selected diagnosis-related groups on regional neonatal care.

The evaluation and reimbursement of hospital use by means of diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) may have a major impact on the utilization of regional neonatal care. Medicare has already implemented the DRG system and other payors, including Medicaid, Blue Cross, and commercial insurance, are also considering adopting it. Under this approach, neonates are assigned to one of seven DRGs, each of which is reimbursed at a relatively fixed rate. An evaluation of hospital utilization by neonates focused on three of these DRGs in four regional neonatal systems located in Upstate New York. Calendar year

The effectiveness of the neonatal diagnosis-related group scheme.

The goal of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of the neonatal diagnosis-related group scheme in patients affected by respiratory distress syndrome. The variable costs of individual patients in the same group are examined. This study uses the data of infants (N = 243) hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Gaslini Children's Hospital in Italy in 2016. The care unit's operating and management costs are employed to estimate the average cost per patient. Operating costs include those related to personnel, drugs, medical supplies, treatment tools, examinations, radiolo

Diagnosis-Related Groups in Hand Surgery--a comparison of six European countries.

Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) is a classification system, which groups patients according to their diagnosis and resource consumption. Common hand surgical diagnoses and procedures were processed using national DRG-groupers of six European countries. The upper thresholds of length of stay (LoS) are indicated for every country with the exception of Spain. The mean value in the series was 9.9 days for Germany, 4.5 days for Austria, 10.7 days for Italy, 9.7 days for Sweden and 9.4 days for the United Kingdom (UK). Germany and Austria also have lower thresholds of LoS and the average LoS.Multiple

Frequency and cost of diagnosis-related group outliers among newborns.

Analysis of outliers, as defined by the Health Care Financing Administration, among 47,776 newborns discharged from 33 short-term hospitals in Maryland in 1981 shows that the three prematurity diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) (386 to 388) represented only 5.3% of all discharges of newborns, but more than one fifth of all outliers and more than three fifths of outlier days of care for newborns. The disparity in charges for outliers and inliers (not exceeding the "trim point") is even more dramatic. Newborns with "extreme immaturity" (DRG 386) and "prematurity with major problems" (DRG 387) toget

Coronary artery bypass grafts and diagnosis related groups: patient classification and hospital reimbursement in 10 European countries.

BACKGROUND: The prospective reimbursement of hospitals through the grouping of patients into a finite number of categories (Diagnosis Related Groups, DRGs), is common to many European countries. However, the specific categories used vary greatly across countries, using different characteristics to define group boundaries and thus those characteristics which result in different payments for treatment. In order to assist in the construction and modification of national DRG systems, this study analyses the DRG systems of 10 European countries. AIMS: To compare the characteristics used to categor
