Virtual reality and augmented reality- emerging screening and diagnostic techniques in ophthalmology: A systematic review.

In health care, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been applied extensively for many purposes. Similar to other technologies such as telemedicine and artificial intelligence, VR and AR may improve clinical diagnosis and screening services in ophthalmology by alleviating current problems, including workforce shortage, diagnostic error, and underdiagnosis. In the past decade a number of studies and products have used VR and AR concepts to build clinical tests for ophthalmology, but comprehensive reviews on these studies are limited. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review o

[Clinical and neuroradiological diagnostics in Graves' orbitopathy].

Early diagnosis of Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is important for a timely treatment of the disease. The diagnosis is based on clinical as well as radiological findings. Detailed assessment and follow-up mainly rely on standardized clinical examinations which register symptoms and signs including inflammation, upper lid retraction, exophthalmos, eye muscle involvement and diplopia, corneal involvement, raised intraocular pressure and optic nerve involvement, the latter representing a particular challenge. Each case of GO is classified in terms of severity and activity allowing suitable therapeutic

Corneal Sensitivity Testing Procedure for Ophthalmologic and Optometric Patients.

The cornea is the most densely innervated structure in the human body, making it one of the most sensitive tissues. Changes in corneal nerve sensitivity can be observed in several ocular surface diseases. Nerve sensitivity may be increased, as is often seen in patients with a neuropathic component to ocular pain, or decreased, as is seen in patients with neurotrophic keratitis. Corneal sensitivity testing involves assessing a patient's reaction to brief corneal stimulation, yields insight into the health of the corneal nerves, and provides diagnostic value for evaluating the health of the nerv

Astigmatism and diagnostic procedures.

Astigmatism represents an inability of the cornea and lens to provide a sharp image onto the retina. Correcting astigmatic errors, whether congenital, contact lens induced or surgically induced, is now an integral part of modern cataract and refractive procedures. Development of modern technology has enabled accurate diagnosis and perfect opportunities for correction; however, while cataract and keratorefractive surgery have come a long way in the last decade, the treatment and diagnosis of astigmatism continue to challenge ophthalmologists. There are several diagnostic procedures and tools av

[Diagnosis of a sudden loss of vision (without redness nor eye pain)].

Sudden loss of vision without redness nor eye pain may come from numerous causes of varying severity. It presents a major source of anxiety for the patient who will seek for urgent consultation. The diagnostic approach is based on history and eye examination, eventually completed by a neurological examination. The purpose of this article is to provide general practitioners simple clues allowing them to quickly orientate the diagnosis. Following simple guidelines, they will be able to treat the condition correctly or refer to an adequate specialist when needed. True emergencies are retinal deta

Punctate inner choroidopathy.

Punctate inner choroidopathy (PIC) is a relatively uncommon inflammatory multifocal chorioretinopathy that affects predominantly young myopic women. It is characterized by the presence of multiple, small, well-defined, yellow-white fundus lesions frequently limited to the posterior pole in the absence of flare and inflammatory cells in the anterior chamber or vitreous cavity. Most patients with PIC do not require treatment, as the disease does not often threaten vision; however, when subfoveal choroidal neovascular membrane (CNV) ensues, patients usually lose sight rapidly, requiring immediate

Artificial intelligence in ophthalmology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review role of artificial intelligence in medicine. RECENT FINDINGS: Artificial intelligence is continuing to revolutionize access, diagnosis, personalization of medicine, and treatment in healthcare. As a matter of fact, artificial intelligence contributed to the research that resulted in 2024 Nobel Prizes in physics, chemistry, and economics. We are only at the tip of the iceberg in utilizing the abilities of artificial intelligence in medicine to improve accuracy of diagnoses and to enhance patient outcomes. Artificial intelligence has allowed better image analysis, p

Diagnosis and surgical treatment of orbital tumors.

Orbital disorders, especially tumors, are rare and may be dealt with by different specialists, making it difficult for any one group to gain substantial experience with these conditions. However, orbital tumors, like many other rare diseases, are optimally managed by those with the greatest expertise. In this article, we review our diagnostic and therapeutic experience managing 172 patients, 103 who required surgery, over a 17-year period. In particular, we comment on our surgical techniques, which became less invasive during this time.

Foundation models for ophthalmic imaging.

Foundation models represent a new frontier in ophthalmic artificial intelligence, enabling learning of transferable features from large unlabelled imaging datasets for flexible application to varying downstream tasks. We systematically analyze the evolution of ophthalmic foundation models across 12 distinct models developed between 2022 and July, 2025. We examine advances in modality integration (unimodal, multimodal to vision-language), pretraining objectives (generative versus contrastive approaches) and supervision strategies (image and text guided). Emerging techniques such as imaging moda

Diagnosis and management of chronic corneal epithelial defects (indolent corneal ulcerations).

Chronic corneal epithelial defects (CCEDs; indolent corneal ulcerations) are the most common refractory ulcerations in veterinary medicine and are diagnosed by their classic appearance. CCEDs are superficial ulcerations without stromal involvement and have a nonadherent epithelial border (lip). Fluorescein stain adheres to the exposed stroma and extends below the epithelial border, outlining the epithelial lip. CCEDs occur secondary to adnexal disease, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, exposure keratitis, neurotrophic keratitis, and primary corneal disease. In cats, herpes keratitis is associated wi

[Migraine aura: differential diagnostics between ophthalmology and neurology].

Migraine aura is a common and diagnostically important phase of migraine. Approximately 25-35 % of individuals with migraine experience fully reversible focal neurological symptoms that typically develop gradually, spread over time, and occur in succession. Visual symptoms are the most common and include scintillating scotomas, fortification spectra, photopsias (flashes of light), and transient visual field defects. Sensory, language, motor, and brainstem symptoms may also occur. This article reviews the clinical spectrum of migraine aura based on the ICHD-3 diagnostic criteria and its charact

Imagining eye care in India (2018 Lalit Prakash Agarwal lecture).

India has done well in eye care delivery by recognizing visual impairment and blindness as a major medical challenge. Major contributions have come from ophthalmologists (mass cataract surgery in the early 1900s; major participation of non-government organizations), policy makers (National Program for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment 1976; systematic development under the World Bank assisted India Cataract Project, 1995-2002), and the industry (manufacturing of affordable surgical instruments and medicines). Although the country could boast of higher cataract surgical coverage and ne

Recent Developments in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Ocular Toxoplasmosis.

Ocular toxoplasmosis, a chorioretinal infection with Toxoplasma gondii, is the most common etiology of posterior uveitis in many countries. Accurate diagnosis depends heavily on the characteristic clinical features of this disease, but atypical presentations, especially in immunocompromised patients, may create diagnostic challenges and lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Molecular biology techniques to diagnose ocular toxoplasmosis have been available for many years and are now accessible as standard laboratory tests in many countries. Aqueous humor or vitreous evaluation to det

Classification and diagnosis of dry eye.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), is divided into two subgroups, tear-deficient and evaporative. Each form calls for a different therapeutic approach and it is therefore essential to apply a combination of diagnostic tests in order to establish the exact diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The diagnosis of KCS is based in part on the patient's history and symptoms and in part on the application of specific tests. Several non-invasive tests exist (e.g. slit-lamp examination, meniscometry, interferometry). Mildly invasive tests are the fluorescein tests, staining with lissa

[Conjunctival provocation test: recommendations].

The diagnosis of ocular allergy, which has become a real public health problem occurring in 25% of the general population and continues to rise, requires allergic testing. Skin and blood tests combined with interviewing the patient demonstrate sensitivity to one or more antigens. However, while allergic testing and interviews generally reveal the cause of the symptoms, only the conjunctival provocation test (CPT) provides clear evidence of a functional relation between the conjunctival pathology and exposure to the antigen. Since there is still no validated consensus regarding the criteria for
