A novel treatment of diaper dermatitis in children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Diaper dermatitis (DD) is an acute inflammatory reaction, regardless of the cause, of the diaper-covered area. Topical skin barrier repair cosmetic products are the mainstay treatment to cure and/or prevent DD. AIMS: To assess the efficacy/tolerability of a zinc gluconate-taurine/zinc oxide and panthenol/ glycerin/ Butyrospermum parkii butter barrier cream using clinical evaluation. METHODS: In this prospective, open-label trial, 20 patients (10 infants/10 adults), with mild/moderate DD enrolled at the Dermatology University Clinic of Catania (Italy) were instructed to apply the

Promoting diaper weaning to prevent diaper-related complications in adult inpatients: a best practice implementation project.

INTRODUCTION: Hospitalized older adults are often routinely placed in diapers without prior assessment of continence status. This practice leads to several adverse outcomes, including skin complications. OBJECTIVES: This evidence implementation project aimed to achieve 80% compliance among nursing staff with continence promotion strategies and a 50% reduction in the incidence of diaper-related complications. METHODS: The project was conducted over a 21-month period in four medical wards at a public university hospital in Singapore. The project used the JBI Evidence Implementation Framework,

Characteristics of Subgroups in the Adult Baby/Diaper Lover Community.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of research on adult baby/diaper lover (ABDL) behavior, particularly from community samples. Prior studies have not examined differences between the AB and DL subgroups in the ABDL community. AIM: To explore whether endorsements of AB role-play enjoyment and ratings of sexual enjoyment during ABDL activity were related to parenting and attachment variables, negative mood states, and reported problems with ABDL and to explore differences by relationship status and by sexual orientation. METHOD: Data from a larger survey of an online ABDL community were analyzed. Th

Partner Knowledge and Involvement in Adult Baby/Diaper Lover Behavior.

Reported partner knowledge of and involvement in adult baby/diaper lover (ABDL) behavior were examined based on responses from 1,795 male and 139 female members of the ABDL community. Individuals in a relationship often divulge their ABDL interests early in dating. Some partners may try ABDL activity initially, but most are not involved. Involved nonpartners may be sanctioned ABDL friends. Nonpartners are usually not involved in ABDL practices because ABDL participants view this as infidelity. Individuals who have never been in a relationship may be working to reconcile their ABDL interests wi

Diaper dermatitis in an adult. A case of erythema papuloerosive of Sevestre and Jacquet.

BACKGROUND: Irritants, friction and occlusion favor dermatitis or inflammatory reactions in the diaper area. Diaper dermatitis is not found exclusively in children but also in adults wearing a diaper for urinary incontinence. CASE: We report a case of eroded papules on the labia majora in a woman with urinary incontinence. CONCLUSION: Erythema papuloerosive of Sevestre and Jacquet is an unusual dermatitis due to irritant agents in the diaper area that may also affect adults. As this dermatitis may resemble neoplasia and venereal disease, it can be easily misdiagnosed, especially in adults.

Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis: a complication of adult urinary incontinence.

Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis is typically described as a severe irritant dermatitis of the perianal region. However, Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis, perianal pseudoverrucous papules and nodules, and granuloma gluteale infantum/ adultorum have been regarded as discrete entities or all part of the same clinical spectrum, representing the result of chronic, severe, irritant contact dermatitis. We present a case of Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis and a discussion of the clinical spectrum of diseases to which it belongs.

Adult baby/diaper lovers: an exploratory study of an online community sample.

This internet-based study provided descriptive information and exploratory analyses on 1,795 male and 139 female members of the Adult Baby/Diaper Lover (ABDL) community. Based on prior research, some research questions focused on the degree to which ABDL behavior was associated with negative mood states, parental relationships, and attachment style. Based on clinical experience, a second research question focused on discerning two possible subgroups within the ABDL community: persons focused on role play behavior and persons who were primarily interested in sexual arousal in their ABDL behavio

An Exploratory Study of Adult Baby-Diaper Lovers' Characteristics in an Italian Online Sample.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the Adult Baby-Diaper Lovers (ABDL) phenomena is quite recent and there are, of yet, few studies on this phenomenon. AIM: This study was conceived to investigate the functions of ABDL behaviours and the characteristics of ABDL in an online Italian community sample. We hypothesized that ABDL phenomena were associated with general psychological maladjustment and with an experience of parental rejection during childhood. It was also assumed that there would be differences in ABDL profiles based on the age of appearance of their first Adult Baby-Diaper Lover (ABDL) fantas

Viral meningitis in child care center staff and parents: an outbreak of echovirus 30 infections.

OBJECTIVE: A report of five cases of viral meningitis among adults with children enrolled in a child care center prompted an investigation of risk factors for viral transmission from children to adult household members. METHODS: To determine recent echovirus 30 (E30) infections, the authors conducted a serologic survey. To determine risk factors for infection among adult household members, they conducted a retrospective cohort study using written questionnaires. RESULTS: Recent E30 infections were found in 84% of children tested, 57% of adult household members tested, and 47% of staff member

Disposable diapers and infant skin.

In an experiment on skin rash caused by diapers, adult skin was used to compare the effects of disposable diapers (A; Pampers), conventional disposable diapers (B), and cotton diapers. Pieces of each type of diaper measuring 2 X 2 cm and containing 0.2 ml saline solution were pasted on forearm skin for 5 h. Water content of the corneum was measured with an impedance meter 1 h after the pieces were removed. Results were excellent for diapers A and B: there were no significant differences observed in water content of the corneum when A and B were compared with conventional cotton diapers. The ad

Clinical Evaluation of a Diaper Containing a Shea Butter-Based Emollient and Impact on Diapered Skin Erythema.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Skin is a baby's first line of defense against mechanical, chemical, enzymatic, and microbial insults. Preventive interventions in the diapered area are important given repetitive, episodic exposures to irritants in urine and feces. For over a century, physicians have utilized petrolatum-based emollients (PBE) prophylactically and retroactively for skin irritation in the diapered area. In this study, a diaper containing an anhydrous, shea butter-based emollient (SBE) was evaluated for its skin effects on adult and baby skin. METHODS: A 6-week, randomized, crossover, on-

Volatile Organic Compounds in Disposable Diapers and Baby Wipes in the US: A Survey of Products and Health Risks.

Many thousands of diapers are worn by young children and the elderly, who have thin and sensitive skin that is highly vulnerable to chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may be ingredients of these products or present as inadvertent or residual components. The levels and potential health risks of VOCs in diapers have not been reported previously. In this study, we collected 31 disposable hygiene products in the US market based on market share and analyzed 98 target VOCs using purge and trap sampling and thermal desorption/gas chromatography/mass spectrometer analysis. Effects of breathable disposable diapers: reduced prevalence of Candida and common diaper dermatitis.

Infants wearing breathable disposable diapers experienced significantly less diaper dermatitis (DD) compared to infants wearing standard, nonbreathable disposable diapers in a series of double-blind clinical trials. Severe DD, including confirmed infection with Candida albicans, was reduced by 38-50% among infants wearing highly breathable (HB) diapers. The prevalence of DD was inversely related to the breathability of the garments. The inhibitory effect of breathable diapers on the survival of Candida was further confirmed in controlled experiments with adult volunteers. A suspension of C. al

Diapers and diaper rashes.

The diaper-wearing population has expanded from infants and children to include adults, especially the elderly. Nurses caring for patients over a wide age range are commonly asked for advice about diapering choices, and for guidance in evaluation, prophylaxis, and treatment of diaper rashes. Two different diaper types, disposables and reusables, and the advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed. A systematic approach is presented for the nursing evaluation of common diaper rashes and their differentiation from rarer skin eruptions of the groin and perineum in diaper-wearing persons.

Preliminary Study of a Capacitive Diaper Sensor System for Urine Absorption Estimation.

Disposable adult diapers are used in medical and nursing care for people with dementia or bedridden patients who are unable to go to the toilet by themselves because of incontinence. To determine if a diaper needs to be changed, the blanket must be turned up, clothing removed, and the diaper opened for inspection. Several studies and products detect urination in diapers. However, most of them are specialized for urination detection, and it is not easy to evaluate the urination time and voided volume. Thus, we are developing a capacitive diaper sensor system that allows nurses and caregivers to

Perineal skin injury: extrinsic environmental risk factors.

Little research has been performed to evaluate factors that may exacerbate perineal skin injury in the adult population. But extensive research has been done and knowledge has been gained from studies with diaper dermatitis in infants. Our objectives in writing this article are to define the anatomical area affected, the terms used, and to review the available literature for diaper dermatitis in infants, elucidating the similarities and differences between diaper dermatitis in infants and perineal dermatitis in adults. The six extrinsic environmental factors that have been identified and exten
