Phylodynamic analysis of recent bovine viral diarrhea viruses in the Republic of Korea.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a globally distributed and economically significant viral pathogen in the cattle industry. Despite ongoing circulation, molecular evolutionary and phylodynamic data on BVDV in the Republic of Korea (ROK) remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and subtype of recent BVDVs circulating in the ROK and to analyze their phylodynamic patterns. A total of 5286 samples, including serum, blood, and diarrheic feces, were collected from Korean native cattle between 2021 and 2022. Of these, 29.9 % (1584/5286) tested positive for BVDV by real-time

The effect of infection of hatched blastocyst bovine embryos with border disease and bovine viral diarrhea viruses.

The effect of infection with teratogenic viruses at early stages of pregnancy is not fully understood. This study aimed to look at the effect of infection with teratogenic viruses such as bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and border disease virus (BDV), on early stage embryos at the hatched blastocyst stage. BVDV and BDV are known to cross the placenta of infected mothers and lead to congenital defects and death of developing fetuses. This study can be a good model for better understanding the effects of other teratogenic viruses such as Rubella virus in humans.

Recombinant Bovine Herpesvirus Type I Expressing the Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus E2 Protein Could Effectively Prevent Infection by Two Viruses.

Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is a comprehensive disease in cattle caused by various viral and bacterial infections. Among them, bovine herpesvirus type I (BoHV-1) and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) play important roles and have caused huge financial losses for the cattle industry worldwide. At present, vaccines against BRDC include trivalent attenuated BoHV-1, BVDV-1, and BVDV-2 live vaccines, BoHV-1 live attenuated vaccines, and BoHV-1/BVDV bivalent live attenuated vaccines, which have limitations in terms of their safety and efficacy. To solve these problems, we optimized th

Eradication of bovine viral diarrhea virus in Germany-Diversity of subtypes and detection of live-vaccine viruses.

Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) causes high economic losses in the cattle population worldwide. In Germany, an obligatory control program with detection and removal of persistently infected animals is in force since 2011. For molecular tracing of virus transmission, a comprehensive sequence data base of the currently circulating BVD viruses was established. Partial sequences of 1007 samples collected between 2008 and 2016 were generated. As dominant viruses, subtypes 1b (47.0%) and 1d (26.5%) could be identified with no marked geographic or sampling year effect, a much higher amount of BVDV-2c was

Construction and Immunogenicity of Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) Viruses Expressing E1 and E2 Proteins of Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus.

Background/Objectives: Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is a major infectious disease of cattle caused by bovine viral diarrhea virus genotypes 1 and 2 (BVDV-1 and BVDV-2). Current inactivated and live attenuated vaccines provide incomplete cross-genotype protection and may exhibit limitations related to durability of immunity or safety. This study evaluated whether co-expression of the BVDV envelope glycoproteins E1 and E2 in a Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) vector could support antigen expression and induce immune responses in a proof-of-concept model. Methods: Recombinant Modified Vaccinia Ankar

Prevalence of bovine respiratory disease viruses in calves from the central desert of Iran.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a significant disease in the cattle industry worldwide. The interaction between environmental factors, hosts, livestock management, and viral and bacterial pathogens causes this disease. Viruses are crucial in the initiation and progression of BRD. This study was the first to investigate the prevalence of BRD viruses using the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction method in nasal and eye conjunctival swabs and blood samples of 115 BRD calves in the central desert of Iran. At least one investigated virus was detected in 44 animals (38.26%). The dete

Distribution of antigen of noncytopathogenic and cytopathogenic bovine virus diarrhea virus biotypes in the intestinal tract of calves following experimental production of mucosal disease.

Mucosal disease can be experimentally induced by inoculating calves persistently viremic with noncytopathogenic (ncp) Bovine Virus Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) with an antigenetically closely related cytopathogenic (cp) BVDV strain. Calves suffering from mucosal disease develop severe intestinal lesions causing breakdown of the gastrointestinal barrier and death. Knowledge about tissue distribution of ncp/cp biotypes of BVDV may contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of these lesions. Distribution of cpBVDV versus ncpBVDV was demonstrated in the intestinal tract of nine calves with exper

Pathogenicity assessment of a bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1l (BVDV-1l) strain in experimentally infected calves.

Bovine viral diarrhea is a widespread and economically important viral disease for livestock which can cause clinically diverse manifestations. The number of established BVDV subgenotypes has increased, not only the serological relationships of recently described subgenotypes but virulence and pathogenic characteristics have not yet been mostly elaborated. The dominant BVDV subgenotype in Turkiye was elaborated to be BVDV-1l, that involves more than half of field strains and there is no scientific data to identify the pathogenicity of this strain so far. This study investigated the pathogenici

Mosaic Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Antigens Elicit Cross-Protective Immunity in Calves.

Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) is an important pathogen that plays a significant role in initiating Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex (BRDC) in cattle. The disease causes multi-billion dollar losses globally due to high calf mortality and increased morbidity leading to heavy use of antibiotics. Current commercial vaccines provide limited cross-protection with several drawbacks such as safety, immunosuppression, potential reversion to virulence, and induction of neonatal pancytopenia. This study evaluates two prototype vaccines containing multiple rationally designed recombinant mosaic BVD

Response to Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus in Heifers Vaccinated with a Combination of Multivalent Modified Live and Inactivated Viral Vaccines.

Bovine viral vaccines contain both live or inactivated/killed formulations, but few studies have evaluated the impact of vaccinating with either live or killed antigens and re-vaccinating with the reciprocal. Commercial dairy heifers were utilized for the study and randomly assigned to three treatment groups. Treatment groups received a commercially available modified-live viral (MLV) vaccine containing BVDV and were revaccinated with a commercially available killed viral (KV) vaccine containing BVDV, another group received the same KV vaccine and was revaccinated with the same MLV vaccine, an

Comparison of bovine viral diarrhea virus-specific antibody responses of young beef calves vaccinated with either modified live virus or inactivated virus regimens.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is an important pathogen causally associated with morbidity and mortality, and production losses in both suckling and weaned beef calves. Vaccination for protection against disease caused by BVDV is challenging because of the inhibitory effect of maternal antibodies; however, it is most convenient for beef producers to vaccinate calves before moving herds to summer pastures. We compared modified live and inactivated vaccines used for priming and boosting beef calves and found that neither type of vaccine results in strong antibody responses in the face of mat

Measuring CMI responses using the PrimeFlow RNA assay: A new method of evaluating BVDV vaccination response in cattle.

Current methods for evaluating bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) vaccination response typically rely on measurement of humoral responses as determined by virus neutralizing antibody titers (VNT) against BVDV. While VNT are correlated with increased protection, research has also shown that cell mediated immunity (CMI) is an important component of a protective response against BVDV. For example, improved protection against BVDV by modified-live viral (MLV) vaccines as compared to killed vaccines is thought to be due to better CMI induced by the MLV. The goal of this work was to evaluate the cel

A Critical Review of Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus: Spotlights on Host Plasticity and Potential Spillover Events.

The bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infects a wide range of domestic and wild mammals. This review hypothesized that there might be cross-species transmission of BVDV. Therefore, the aim was to explore the BVDV-5' UTR and N-pro sequence-based evidence to understand host plasticity among different animals. A total of 146 unique BVDV sequences retrieved from GenBank, originating from 12 distinct mammalian species that are submitted from 55 countries, were analyzed. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that all three BVDV species exhibited genetic relatedness infecting diverse animal species. BV
