Effects of pesticides on freshwater diatoms.

The study of pesticide effects on algae, and diatoms in particular, was focused on photosynthesis and biomass growth disturbances. Few studies have been performed to investigate the effects of these toxic agents on intracellular structures of diatom cells. Nuclear alterations and cell wall abnormalities were reported for diatoms exposed to toxic compounds. Nevertheless, the cellular mechanisms implicated in the development of such alterations and abnormalities remain unclear. Sensitivity to pesticides is known to be quite different among different diatom species. Eutrophic and small species ar

Tryptophanol enhances nitrogen assimilation in marine diatoms.

Diatoms exhibit high competitive capacity in nitrogen assimilation, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we identify a non-ribosomal peptide synthase-like gene (PtNRPS1) with an atypical domain structure (A-T-R1-R2) in the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, crucial for short-term nitrogen assimilation. In vitro enzyme assays show PtNRPS1 catalyzes conversion of L-tryptophan to tryptophanol, a tryptophan-derived indole compound that promotes diatom growth at concentrations far lower than indole-3-acetic acid. Transcriptomic, metabolomic analyses, and stable-isotope analyses

Divergence of photosynthetic strategies amongst marine diatoms.

Marine phytoplankton, and in particular diatoms, are responsible for almost half of all primary production on Earth. Diatom species thrive from polar to tropical waters and across light environments that are highly complex to relatively benign, and so have evolved highly divergent strategies for regulating light capture and utilization. It is increasingly well established that diatoms have achieved such successful ecosystem dominance by regulating excitation energy available for generating photosynthetic energy via highly flexible light harvesting strategies. However, how different light harve

Evolutionary dynamics in plastomes and mitogenomes of diatoms.

Diatoms are pivotal in global oxygen, carbon dioxide, and silica cycling, contributing significantly to photosynthesis and serving as fundamental components in aquatic ecosystems. Recent advancements in genomic sequencing have shed light on their evolutionary dynamics, revealing evolutionary complex genomes influenced by symbiotic relationships and horizontal gene transfer events. By analyzing publicly available sequences for 120 plastomes and 70 mitogenomes, this paper aims to elucidate the evolutionary dynamics of diatoms across diverse lineages. Gene losses and pseudogenes were more frequen

Functional morphology of gliding motility in benthic diatoms.

Diatoms, a highly successful group of photosynthetic algae, contribute to a quarter of global primary production. Many species are motile, despite having no appendages and a completely rigid cell body. Cells move to seek out nutrients, locate mating partners, and undergo vertical migration. To explore the natural diversity of diatom motility, we perform a comparative study across five common biofilm-forming species. Combining morphological measurements with high-resolution cell tracking, we establish how gliding movements relate to the morphology of the raphe-a specialized slit in the cell wal

Diatoms Are Selective Segregators in Global Ocean Planktonic Communities.

Diatoms are a major component of phytoplankton, believed to be responsible for around 20% of the annual primary production on Earth. As abundant and ubiquitous organisms, they are known to establish biotic interactions with many other members of plankton. Through analyses of cooccurrence networks derived from the Tara Oceans expedition that take into account both biotic and abiotic factors in shaping the spatial distributions of species, we show that only 13% of diatom pairwise associations are driven by environmental conditions; the vast majority are independent of abiotic factors. In contras

Diatoms and diatomaceous earth as novel poultry vaccine adjuvants.

Diatoms are single cell eukaryotic microalgae; their surface possesses a porous nanostructured silica cell wall or frustule. Diatomaceous earth (DE) or diatomite is a natural siliceous sediment of diatoms. Since silica has been proved to have adjuvant capabilities, we propose that diatoms and DE may provide an inexpensive and abundant source of adjuvant readily available to use in livestock vaccines. In a first experiment, the safety of diatoms used as an adjuvant for in-ovo vaccination was investigated. In a second experiment, we assessed the humoral immune response after one in-ovo vaccinatio

Diatoms in forensic analysis: A practical approach in rats.

A diagnosis of drowning is a challenge in legal medicine, as there is generally a lack of pathognomonic findings indicative of drowning. Diatom analysis has been considered very supportive for a diagnosis of drowning, although the test is still controversial for some investigators. We assessed diatoms association with drowning in the peripheral tissues of drowned rats and the effects of the drowning medium on the diatom yield. A modified acid digestion method was optimised for diatom recovery in water and rat tissues. Eighteen adult Wistar rats were employed for the study, subdivided into six

First identification of marine diatoms with anti-tuberculosis activity.

Marine microalgae are considered a potentially new and valuable source of biologically active compounds for applications in several biotechnology sectors. They can be easily cultured, have short generation times and enable an environmentally-friendly approach to drug discovery by overcoming problems associated with the over-utilization of marine resources and the use of destructive collection practices. Considering the increasing rate of antibiotic-resistance bacteria and infections by fungi, 46 microalgae have been screened in this study for possible antibacterial and antifungal activities. T

[An improved method for detection of diatoms (author's transl)].

An improved method for detection of diatoms in case of drowning is reported. The sample is digested with nitric acid. In order to avoid destruction of diatoms as well as losses by centrifugation etc. the time for wet digestion was reduced and the digest solution is filtered through a membrane filter. Fatty material is removed by alternate washing the filter with 2-Propanol and Petroleum ether. Following the wet digestion of the filter, aliqutos of this digest solution are filtered and the filter is examined microscopically. As the recommended procedure is less time consuming and yields almost

Labyrinthula merlionensis sp. nov.: A Novel Labyrinthulid Infecting Marine Diatoms.

Labyrinthulomycetes are a class of fungus-like heterotrophic protists from the Stramenopiles lineage, recognized for their ecological role as decomposers and contributors to nutrient cycling. They colonize various substrates, from seaweed to terrestrial environments, utilizing ectoplasmic networks for nutrient absorption. This study characterized a novel Labyrinthula strain associated with the marine diatom Biddulphia. Phylogenetic analysis of the full-length 18S rRNA gene positioned this strain as a new species, Labyrinthula merlionensis sp. nov. Scanning electron and light microscopy observa

Contrasting growth phase-dependent microbiota dynamics between dinoflagellates and diatoms.

Bacteria associated with phytoplankton can profoundly influence host physiology and bloom dynamics. Yet it remains poorly understood whether the microbiota of dinoflagellates is restructured across host growth phases, and how such dynamics differ from those of other phytoplankton. Here, we tracked the microbiota of three harmful algal bloom (HAB)-forming dinoflagellates (Alexandrium catenella, A. pacificum, Gymnodinium catenatum) and three diatoms (Cylindrotheca closterium, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Coscinodiscus granii), each represented by two strains of distinct spatiotemporal origin and sa

A case of oral foreign-body granuloma due to diatoms.

Diatoms are photosynthetic algae with a siliceous exoskeleton. Diatoms are utilized by a wide array of industries for applications such as filtration and pest control. Unsubstantiated claims have also propelled their societal reach to trendy oral and topical uses. This case highlights a rare case of an oral granuloma secondary to diatoms. An 80-year-old woman presented with a mobile, firm, asymptomatic submucosal mass on her lower left mandibular vestibular mucosa. Histopathology showed a non-caseating granulomatous reaction to diatoms. Her only verified contact with a diatomaceous earth produ

Diatom-Positive Cadaver: Drowning or Homicide?

Medico-legal investigations should be performed on all unnatural (homicide, suicide, or accident), unexpected, and suspicious deaths to evaluate the possibility of homicide and ascertain the exact cause of death. However, in some scenarios, burial takes place before an autopsy can be conducted. In such cases, exhumation is performed, which involves excavating the remains of previously buried or cremated individuals for medico-legal investigations. Although the diatom test is a very useful microbiological approach in concluding death by drowning, its reliability remains controversial. Our study

Breaking the cell wall for efficient DNA delivery to diatoms.

Diatoms produce 20% of the world's fixed organic carbon yet remain underutilized as cell factories due to limited genetic engineering tools. Here, we present optimized electroporation and polyethylene glycol (PEG) transformation methods for the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, enabling delivery of DNA and Cas9 ribonucleoprotein complexes with high efficiency. Transformants are recovered with as little as 1 ng of DNA, and linear or circular episomes as large as 55.6 kb are successfully introduced. The optimized electroporation protocol also reveals an unexpected capability: episomes can

Zwitterionic modified electrostatic flocking surfaces for diatoms and mussels resistance.

Environmentally friendly antifouling coatings without biocide release need to be developed. Herein, a vertical array of nylon fibers coated with poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) was prepared by the electrostatic flocking technique and free radical polymerization catalyzed by Fe2+, which are called zwitterionic electrostatic flocking surfaces (ZEFS). The ZEFS showed resistance to diatoms because the fiber diameter was smaller than the diatom size. At the same time, the ZEFS prevented mussels adhesion. The number of plaques on the ZEFS was reduced by more than 98% and 96% compared with th
