Polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are widespread environmental contaminants which have been detected in human tissues and implicated in several poisoning incidents. Their toxic effects are similar to those observed with other related halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons such as TCDD. The effects of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), trace toxic contaminants of commercial polychlorinated biphenyl preparations (PCBs), on the induction of hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes were studied in the rat. PCDFs were about a thousand times more potent than PCBs (Kanechlor-500) as inducers of cytochrome P-450. The effect of heavy metals on the degradation of dibenzofuran by Sphingomonas wittichii RW1 was determined in liquid cultures. The results showed that 10mg/L cadmium, mercury and copper not only affected the growth of RW1 with dibenzofuran but also the ability of resting cells to degrade this compound. Growth and degradation were strongly inhibited by mercury, even at 1mg/L, while the inhibitory effect of cadmium and copper at the same concentration or at 5mg/L were negligible. Four previously undescribed dibenzofurans and derivatives, named ribisin G-J (1-4), along with seven known compounds (5-11) were isolated from Phellinus ribis. Among them, compounds 1-3 were identified as fully aromatic dibenzofurans, whereas compound 4 was a dibenzofuran derivative. Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are persistent environmental pollutants shown to adversely interact with several functions of the endocrine system. In 1978-1979, over 2000 Taiwanese people ingested rice oil accidentally contaminated with PCBs and PCDFs. Our studies have evaluated biochemical changes in placentae from humans exposed to rice oil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in Taiwan. Placentae were obtained from nonsmoking women 4 to 5 years after the exposure had occurred. Two unusual dibenzofurans, preussiafurans A-B (1-2), together with six known compounds have been isolated from the fungus Preussia sp. occurring in Enantia chlorantha Oliv. The structures were established on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and MS analysis. Compounds 1-4 showed antiplasmodial activity against erythrocytic stages of chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum (NF54) and moderate cytotoxicity on L6 cell lines with IC50 values of 8.67 and 14.8 μM, respectively.

Dibenzofuran (DF) is formed from phenol and benzene in combustion gas exhaust streams prior to particle collection equipment. Subsequent chlorination at lower temperatures on particle surfaces is a potential source of chlorinated dibenzofuran (CDF). Gas streams containing 8% O(2) and approximately 0.1% DF vapor were passed through particle beds containing copper (II) chloride (0.5% Cu, mass) at temperatures ranging from 200 to 400 degrees C to investigate the potential for CDF formation during particle collection. Experiment duration was sufficient to provide an excess amount of DF (DF/Cu=3).
