Several extracts of Origanum dictamnus, an endemic plant of Greece growing only in the island of Crete and the bioassay-directed isolated ursolic acid, were tested in vitro against the P388 (murine leukemia) and the human bronchial epidermoid cancer NSCLC-N6 (non small cell lung cancer) cell lines. Both the initial dichloromethane extract and the isolated from it ursolic acid exhibited cytotoxic activity. Ursolic acid was also tested in vivo, on murine ascite leukemia P388, where it exhibited at a dose of 50 mg/kg a marginal antileukemic activity.

We report four cases of toxic hepatitis that occurred after taking a decoction made by boiling down the root of Dictamnus dasycarpus. The four patients had a median age of 60 years, common symptoms of jaundice and general weakness, and stated that they had not consumed alcohol for at least 5 years. The markers of hepatitis A, B, and C were all negative in the patients. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed common bile ducts with normal diameters. Two of the cases were a mother and daughter, and the other two were sporadic. All of them had consumed a decoction made by boiling down the root of Dict

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE AND BACKGROUND: "Dictamnus" was a popular name for a group of medicinal herbaceous plant species of the Rutaceae and Lamiaceae, which since the 4th century have been used for gynaecological problems and other illnesses BCE and still appear in numerous ethnobotanical records.
AIMS: This research has as four overarching aims: Determining the historical evolution of medical preparations labelled "Dictamnus" and the different factors affecting this long-standing herbal tradition. Deciphering and differentiating those medicinal uses of "Dictamnus" which strictly corr

We report two patients with bullous phototoxic contact dermatitis caused by Dictamnus albus L. (gas plant) which belongs to the Rutaceae family. In both cases long lasting postinflammatory hyper-pigmentations were observed as a result of the phototoxic contact dermatitis. The phototoxic components of Dictamnus albus L. are the furocoumarins 5-methoxypsoralen (bergapten) and 8-methoxypsoralen, and the alkaloid dictamnin whose phototoxic properties were recently discovered. Even though reactions to the gas plant have been infrequently reported, it is becoming more popular with gardenus and shoul

Eight previously undescribed protolimonoids, including seven apotirucallane-type (1, 3, 6, and 14-17) and one tirucallane-type (11) triterpenoids, along with ten known analogues, were isolated from the root bark of Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz. Their structures were unambiguously determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The absolute configurations of the flexible tetrahydrofuran side chains in 1 and 10 were definitively established, resolving a longstanding stereochemical challenge in this class of triterpenoids. All isolated compounds were evaluat

Origanum dictamnus L. (dittany of Crete), is traditionally used as an herbal beverage valued for its digestive properties and aromatic profile. This study aimed to evaluate its potential as a functional food ingredient by combining detailed phytochemical profiling with assessment of gastrointestinal activity. The infusion, prepared according to the traditional mode, was chemically characterized by NMR and HPLC-PDA-MS. Its constituents were identified and quantified, revealing three major classes of secondary metabolites, including four novel flavone glycosides, Luteolin-7-O-[2'''-caffeoyl-gluc

The antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of methanol or dichloromethane extracts of O. dictamnus, produced from wild and organic cultivated specimens, were determined. The Rancimat and malondialdehyde (MDA) by HPLC methods were used to measure the antioxidant action, in comparison with that of the common commercial antioxidants butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and alpha-tocopherol. The extracts that presented high antioxidant activity were encapsulated in liposomes and their antioxidant action was again estimated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermaloxidative decomposition of

The limonoid triterpene, obacunone, was found to enhance the cytotoxicity of vincristine against L1210 cells by approximately 10-fold. Further, it was found that the cytotoxicity of other microtubule inhibitors such as vinblastine and taxol in drug-sensitive KB-3-1 cells as well as in multidrug-resistant KB-V1 cells was enhanced greatly in the presence of obacunone. On the other hand, there was no remarkable potentiating effect of obacunone on the cytotoxicity of other antineoplastic drugs such as adriamycin, cisplatin or 5-fluorouracil. From these results, it is implied that the potentiating

BACKGROUND: Effects of Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz. on allergic asthma and their underlying mechanisms remain unclarified. Thus, we investigated the effects of D. dasycarpus Turcz. water extract (DDW) on mucus hypersecretion in mice with ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma and human bronchial epithelial cells.
METHODS: BALB/c mice were used to establish an OVA-induced allergic asthma model. Mice were grouped into the OVA sensitization/challenge, 100 and 300 mg/kg DDW treatment, and dexamethasone groups. In mice, cell counts in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), serum and BALF analyses, and histop

The root bark of Dictamus dasycarpus Turcz. has been traditionally used for the topical treatment of skin disorders like pruritus. This study was designed to investigate the inflammatory and skin barrier protective effects of D. dasycarpus in mice with calcipotriol (MC903)-induced atopic dermatitis (AD). Topical skin lesions on male Balb/c mice (8 weeks old) were treated topically with an ethanolic extract of D. dasycarpus (EEDD), and skin water content, water holding capacity (WHC), histopathological abnormalities, and inflammatory cytokine and chemokine levels were investigated. Malassezia spp. are lipophilic fungi that are part of the normal flora of the human skin and are the etiological agents of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. β-Carbonic Anhydrases (CAs; EC 4.2.1.1) expressed from the pathogenic fungi are an alternative/complementary drug target. Previous work by our groups demonstrated that flavonoids and depsides can effectively inhibit Malassezia globosa β-CA (MgCA). In continuation of this study herein we report the inhibitory activity of a variety of phenols from Origanum dictamnus L. and Thymus vulgaris L. against β-MgCA, among them I4-II7-di-carvacrol,

The root bark of Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz is a traditional Chinese medicine, Dictamni Cortex (DC), which is mainly used in the clinical treatment of skin inflammation, eczema, rubella, rheumatism, and gynecological inflammation. Unexpectedly, there are some cases of liver injury after the administration of DC. However, the mechanism of hepatotoxicity remains ambiguous. The aim of this study was to explore the mechanism and substance bases of DC hepatotoxicity based on network pharmacology and molecular docking, verified through pharmacological experiments. BACKGROUND: Cholestatic liver injury (CLI), characterized by disrupted bile flow resulting in hepatic inflammation and fibrosis, corresponds to "jaundice" in traditional Chinese medicine. Although Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz. (Cortex Dictamni) has been historically documented for jaundice treatment, its efficacy and mechanisms remain unclear.
PURPOSE: This study investigates the hepatoprotective effects of Cortex Dictamni aqueous extract (CDAE) against CLI, focusing on its role in modulating the gut-liver axis to restore bile acid homeostasis and alleviate hepatic injury.
METHODS: An α-naphth
