Lungworm: (Dictyocaulus arnfieldi) infection in donkeys.

The clinical, parasitological and pathological findings in a group of six donkeys naturally infected with D arnfieldi larvae are described. One animal had to be sacrificed at an early date because it developed pneumonia. The remaining five were unthrifty, showed mild clinical respiratory signs and had heavy strongyle infections. They had varying numbers of adult worms in the airways of the lungs and eggs were found coiled up in the smaller bronchi where they had apparently lead to an obstruction to airflow in that segment. The most striking gross pathological changes were circular discrete are

Contributions to Knowledge of the Dictyocaulus Infection of the Red Deer.

Dictyocaulosis is a parasitic disease that affects ungulate species, including red deer (Cervus elaphus). The genus Dictyocaulus comprises eighteen species, but only four have been reported to infect red deer. The disease is characterized by respiratory tract infection, particularly in the lungs, bronchi, and bronchioles, leading to inflammatory and hemorrhagic microscopic lesions, as well as emphysema and edema. The biological cycle involves a female ovipositing larvated eggs in the bronchi and trachea, which are expelled to the exterior through coughing or feces, releasing L1 into the enviro

Morphological investigations on the pathology of Dictyocaulus viviparus infections in cattle.

Morphological investigations of lungs obtained from cattle that had been experimentally infected with Dictyocaulus viviparus were carried out using a new fixation technique that excludes post-mortem changes in the samples. Light and electron microscopical investigation showed a substantial loss of ciliated epithelial cells in the bronchi, severely affecting the mucociliary clearance. Bronchiolitis, peribronchiolitis and cell-rich mucus caused bronchial atelectasis and consolidation of the related alveoli. Interlobular septa completely separated diseased from normal tissue. Clara cells containe

[Fluorescent microscopy in the diagnosis of Dictyocaulus infection in sheep].

Fluorescence microscopy was employed to study Dictyocaulus infection in 15 experimentally infected lambs each given 2000 D. filaria larvae. Studied were also the sera of 10 control lambs and of 20 sheep and goats infected with other helminths. Antibodies were established after the 14th day in 53 per cent of the lambs, the 20th day in 86.6 per cent, and the 27th day in all animals infected with the parasite. Antigens were found mainly in the wall of the digestive and reproductive organs, and in the cuticle of the larvae. As a method of early diagnosis fluorescence microscopy is simple, precise,

Experimental infections with Dictyocaulus viviparus in vaccinated and unvaccinated red deer.

Four of eight red deer calves which had been artificially reared and were lungworm free were vaccinated with bovine lungworm oral vaccine when eight weeks old; the other four were not vaccinated. Three of each category were challenged daily with 500 Dictyocaulus viviparus infective stage larvae per kg liveweight for 17 days when six months old while one in each category was left as an unchallenged control. The effects of challenge were monitored and all challenged deer and one control were killed for post mortem assessment. Challenge with D viviparus was associated with reduced food intakes an

Use of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in the diagnosis of Dictyocaulus filaria infection.

The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect and quantify antibodies to whole worm extract antigens of Dictyocaulus filaria. The results provided evidence that the test was highly sensitive and could be used as a tool for epidemiological studies. No cross reactions were observed with sera from lambs infected with the hookworm Gaigeria pachyscelis.

Prevalence of equine lungworm (Dictyocaulus arnfieldi) infection and associated risk factors in Egypt.

INTRODUCTION: Dictyocaulus arnfieldi infection is a common parasitic respiratory disease of equines that can adversely affect animal health, welfare, and productivity. However, epidemiological information on this infection remains limited in many regions of Egypt. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of D. arnfieldi infection and identify associated risk factors among equines in three Egyptian governorates. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 415 equines, including 150 donkeys, 55 mules, and 210 horses. Animals were examined for D. arnfieldi infection, and data on specie

Oxidative stress in dairy cows naturally infected with the lungworm Dictyocaulus viviparus (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea).

The aim of this study was to analyse the oxidative and anti-oxidant status in serum samples from dairy cows naturally infected by Dictyocaulus viviparus and its relation with pathological analyses. The diagnosis of the disease was confirmed by necropsy of one dairy cow with heavy infection by the parasite in the lungs and bronchi. Later, blood and faeces were collected from another 22 cows from the same farm to measure reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities on day 0 (pre-treatment) and day

Efficacy of Cydectin moxidectin 1% injectable against experimental infections of Dictyocaulus viviparus and Bunostomum phlebotomum superimposed on natural gastrointestinal infections in calves.

Twenty male Holstein calves averaging 105 kg in weight and naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes and small numbers of lungworm and hookworm, were given experimental infections with the two latter species to provide adult and larval stages for anthelmintic evaluation. Following random allotment, one group of 10 calves was injected subcutaneously with moxidectin at a dosage of 0.2 mg kg-1 of body weight. A second group of 10 was injected subcutaneously with unmedicated blank vehicle at a dosage of 1 ml per 50 kg of body weight. Fecal samples were examined before treatment and at 7 a

Predicting the unpredictable? A climate-based model of the timing of peak pasture infectivity for Dictyocaulus viviparus.

Outbreaks of cattle lungworm disease (Dictyocaulus viviparus) are explosive and costly. The unpredictability of the disease often encourages farmers to apply blanket anthelmintic treatments to the herd, which impede the acquisition of immunity, increase the risk of drug resistance, and interfere with efforts to reduce anthelmintic use against ubiquitous gastrointestinal nematodes. Improving our understanding of the factors which lead to a high risk of infection with lungworm, (including climatic pressure), would support a more targeted management. We present GLOWORM-FL-DV, the first mathematic

Cytokine mRNA expression in bronchoalveolar lavage cells during Dictyocaulus viviparus infection in calves.

The purpose of this study was to monitor local cytokine responses to Dictyocaulus viviparus in calves during primary infection and re-infection. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was collected weekly from experimentally infected calves and interleukin-2 (IL-2), IL-4, IL-5, IL-10 and IFN-γ mRNA expression was quantified in BALF cells. The major finding was a prominent transient increase in IL-4 mRNA expression, compared with that of uninfected calves, observed in BALF cells collected 2-3 weeks post-primary D. viviparus infection. At 2 weeks post-infection, macroscopic worms were also first ob

A model for study of lungworm (Dictyocaulus sp.) and gastrointestinal nematode infection in young red deer (Cervus elaphus).

A model of sub-clinical parasitism in young red deer, using concurrent trickle infections of lungworm (Dictyocaulus sp.) and mixed gastro-intestinal (GI) nematodes of deer-origin was evaluated. 20 parasite-free deer calves were artificially reared indoors from 4 days of age. A further five calves were naturally reared on pasture with their dams, treated with anthelmintic and brought indoors at 3-4 months. At 4-4.5 months of age they were individually housed and allocated to five groups (n=5). Groups were dosed 3 x per week, for 9 weeks with 0, 100 and 500, 200 and 1000 (2 groups), 400 and 2000

Distribution of Pasteurella haemolytica in the respiratory tracts of carrier calves and those subsequently infected experimentally with Dictyocaulus viviparus.

Distribution of Pasteurella haemolytica in the respiratory tracts of calves with no apparent clinical signs of illness and those infected experimentally with Dictyocaulus viviparus was determined so as to define carrier sites for this organism. The calves had been positive by nasopharyngeal swab for either P haemolytica A2 or A1 for at least two months or for over a month, respectively, before slaughter. P haemolytica A1 was acquired following horizontal spread from other infected calves. It was observed post mortem that P haemolytica A1 or A2 resided in the tonsils and retropharyngeal lymph n

Opening a can of lungworms: Molecular characterization of Dictyocaulus (Nematoda: Dictyocaulidae) infecting North American bison (Bison bison).

Dictyocaulus is a globally distributed genus of lungworms of domestic and wild ungulates. Dictyocaulus adults inhabit the bronchi, frequently causing subclinical and clinical disease, and that impacts animal health and production. North American bison (Bison bison) and cattle (Bos taurus) share various parasitic nematode species, particularly in areas where co-grazing occurs. The current assumption is that North American bison share the lungworm D. viviparus with cattle, but this has not been confirmed on a molecular basis. The aim of this study was to molecularly characterize Dictyocaulus lun

DICTYOCAULUS CERVI-LIKE LUNGWORM INFECTION IN A ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK (CERVUS CANADENSIS NELSONI) FROM WYOMING, USA.

Dictyocaulus spp. infections are common in North American cervids, with Dictyocaulus viviparus described as most common. A Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni) was found dead in Wyoming, US with significant bronchitis and pneumonia. In the bronchi and trachea, numerous large nematodes were found and grossly identified as Dictyocaulus spp. lungworms. Macroscopic alterations, such as distended interlobular septa and edema with foam and mucus observed on cut surface and in trachea and bronchi, were consistent with those commonly described in D. viviparus infections. Female lungworms wer

Apparent prevalence of and risk factors for infection with Ostertagia ostertagi, Fasciola hepatica and Dictyocaulus viviparus in Swiss dairy herds.

Infections with helminth parasites can negatively affect performance of dairy cows. Knowledge on infection intensity, spatial distributions and risk factors are key to develop targeted treatment strategies. Canada and most EU countries have conducted large investigations, but respective data for Switzerland were missing. We now performed a bulk tank milk serosurvey for Ostertagia ostertagi, Fasciola hepatica, and Dictyocaulus viviparus on a total of 1036 voluntarily participating dairy herds that were sampled at confinement periods, i.e. in winter 2014/15 or 2015/16, respectively. All samples
