Restricted diet modifies carbohydrate metabolism in immature rats.

The aim of the present work was to study the effect of a restricted diet on carbohydrate metabolism in submandibular glands of female prepuber rats and the influence of arachidonic acid derivatives. Rats of 21 days of age were divided into three groups. Group I: normally fed rats. Group II: restricted diet (50% of the normal food intake). Group III: normally restricted diet with re-feeding. The baseline concentration of tissue glycogen was significantly higher in Group II than in I or III and after 60 min of incubation in a glucose free medium all groups showed a glycogen drop. In addition, th

Carbohydrate-restricted diets and Type 1 diabetes mellitus: research considerations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is managed via careful control of blood glucose, exogenous insulin, diet, exercise, and other physiologic factors. Interestingly, the dietary recommendations for T1DM have had very little systematic research. Many clinical observations, as well as emerging research studies, have noted that a carbohydrate-restricted diet can lead to normalization of blood glucoses with reduction in hypoglycemic reactions among motivated individuals. RECENT FINDINGS: In this paper, we review observations of carbohydrate restriction and propose a series of studi

Impacts of carbohydrate-restricted diets on micronutrient intakes and status: A systematic review.

A systematic review of published evidence on micronutrient intake/status with carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRD) was conducted in Web of Science, Medline, Embase, Scopus, CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov up to October 2018. We identified 10 studies: seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) ("Atkins"-style, n = 5; "Paleolithic" diets, n = 2), two Atkins-style noncontrolled trials and one cross-sectional study. Prescribed carbohydrate varied 4% to 34% of energy intake. Only one noncontrolled trial prescribed multivitamin supplements. Dietary intakes/status were reported over 2 to 104 weeks, wit

Effects of a Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet on β-Cell Response in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes.

CONTEXT: β-Cell response to glucose is compromised in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), possibly due in part to excessive carbohydrate consumption. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine if a eucaloric carbohydrate-restricted (CR) diet (∼9% energy from carbohydrate, 65% energy from fat), compared to a eucaloric higher carbohydrate (HC) diet (∼55% energy from carbohydrate, 20% energy from fat), would improve β-cell response to glucose in participants with T2D. METHODS: Participants were 57 African American and European American adults with T2D not using insulin. Medications we

Calorie or carbohydrate restriction? The ketogenic diet as another option for supportive cancer treatment.

The author agrees with Champ et al. that calorie reduction (CR) is a good supportive intervention for patients undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy. However, for those with cachexia or for those who are at risk for cachexia, CR may be problematic. Additionally, less food consumed means fewer nutrients. For these patients, the author suggests the addition of the ketogenic diet, which could be designed to include high-quality foods and could be combined with anticancer neutraceuticals.

Medical and Psychological Considerations for Carbohydrate-Restricted Diets in Youth With Type 1 Diabetes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Given the challenges achieving recommended glycemic targets in youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D), providers may consider recommending carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRDs) to optimize glycemic control. The goal of the present review is to describe relevant literature on the potential medical and psychosocial benefits and risks of CRDs in youth with T1D. RECENT FINDINGS: Limited data exist on the effects of CRDs in pediatric populations. Findings from studies with youth and adults are mixed; some indicate that CRDs may be associated with desirable medical outcomes, such as imp

Short-term effect of plant-based Nordic diet versus carbohydrate-restricted diet on glucose levels in gestational diabetes - the eMOM pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The optimal nutritional treatment for gestational diabetes (GDM) is still a matter of debate. With increasing rates of GDM and potential negative consequences for the health of mother and child, the best treatment should be established. The Nordic diet with emphasis on plant-based protein show promising health outcomes in other populations but has yet to be investigated in GDM population. The aim of this study, which is part of the "Effect of plant-based Nordic diet versus carbohydrate-restricted diet on glucose levels in gestational diabetes" (eMOM) pilot study was to compare the

Glycemic control in women with GDM: insights from a randomized controlled pilot trial on plant-based Nordic healthy diet versus moderately carbohydrate restricted diet.

BACKGROUND: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) prevalence is rising worldwide, but optimal dietary strategies remain unclear. The eMOM pilot RCT compared a plant-protein rich Healthy Nordic Diet (HND) and a moderately carbohydrate restricted diet (MCRD) and their potential effects on time in glucose target range (≤ 7.8 mmol/L, %TIR), and on newborn body composition. METHODS: Forty-two participants were randomized to either HND (n = 20) or MCRD (n = 22) face-to-face nutritional counseling from gestational weeks (GW) 24 + 0-28 + 6 (baseline) until delivery. The HND intervention had no restrict

Biochemical, Anthropometric, and Physiological Responses to Carbohydrate-Restricted Diets Versus a Low-Fat Diet in Obese Adults: A Randomized Crossover Trial.

Some research supports high-fat carbohydrate (CHO)-restricted diets for weight and fat loss and improvement of cardiovascular disease risk factors. To test this, a randomized crossover study was designed. Subjects (17 obese men and women [BMI: 30-38 kg/m2]) were fed three diets (supplying 1600 and 2200 kilocalories (kcal)/day for women and men, respectively) for 4 weeks, with each trial separated by 4-week washout periods. One CHO-restricted diet (10% CHO, 50% fat, and 40% protein content) was rich in plant foods and mushrooms, while the other CHO-restricted diet included more animal foods (10

Effects of intensive lifestyle interventions with calorie-carbohydrate-restricted diet versus time-restricted eating on appetite and binge eating in type 2 diabetes: A randomized controlled trial.

The impact of intensive lifestyle interventions on appetite regulation and binge eating in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains unclear. This study evaluated the effects of combined lifestyle interventions on appetite responses and binge eating in overweight or obese adults with T2D. In a randomized trial, 120 participants with T2D were allocated to three groups (n = 40 each): (1) Calorie-carbohydrate restriction (CCR), (2) Time-restricted eating with CCR (TRE + CCR), or (3) Control. Intervention groups received structured exercise and behavioral education based on the Information-Mo

Postoperative recurrence of pancreatic cancer controlled for 9 months solely by severe carbohydrate restriction: ketogenic diet.

Carbohydrate restriction (ketogenic diet) is a cancer treatment that reduces energy production by oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria of cancer cells and increases it through anaerobic glycolysis in cytoplasm. We report a patient in whom progression of pancreatic cancer recurrence was suppressed solely by a ketogenic diet for 9-month post-surgery. A 60-year-old female with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer underwent pancreatoduodenectomy after 3 cycles of chemotherapy with gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel. Multiple pulmonary metastases were observed 22 months after the surgery. We administ

Therapeutic use of carbohydrate-restricted diets in an autistic child; a case report of clinical and 18FDG PET findings.

The ketogenic diet (KD) is a high-fat, adequate-protein, and low-carbohydrate diet that has been used successfully in the treatment of refractory epilepsies for almost 100 years. There has been accumulating evidence to show that the KD may provide a therapeutic benefit in autism spectrum disorders, albeit by a yet-unknown mechanism. We report a case of a 6-year-old patient with high-functioning autism and subclinical epileptic discharges who responded poorly to several behavioural and psychopharmacological treatments. The patient was subsequently placed on the KD due to significant glucose hyp

Early time-restricted carbohydrate consumption vs conventional dieting in type 2 diabetes: a randomised controlled trial.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Early time-restricted carbohydrate consumption (eTRC) is a novel dietary strategy that involves restricting carbohydrate-rich food intake to the morning and early afternoon to align with circadian variations in glucose tolerance. We examined the efficacy, feasibility and safety of eTRC in individuals with type 2 diabetes under free-living conditions. METHODS: In this randomised, parallel-arm, open label, controlled trial, participants with type 2 diabetes and overweight/obesity (age 67.2±7.9 years, 47.8% women, BMI 29.4±3.7 kg/m2, HbA1c 49±5 mmol/mol [6.6±0.5%]) were randomis

Effects of a carbohydrate-restricted diet on hepatic lipid content in adolescents with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A pilot, randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as the most common form of liver disease among adolescents in industrialized countries. While lifestyle intervention remains the hallmark treatment for NAFLD, the most effective dietary strategy to reverse NAFLD in children is unknown. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of a moderately CHO-restricted diet (CRD) vs fat-restricted diet (FRD) in adolescents with NAFLD on reduction in liver fat and insulin resistance. Efficacy and compliance of carbohydrate-restricted diets for treating drug-resistant epilepsy: A network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) presents a significant clinical challenge since many patients fail to respond adequately to pharmacological treatments, resulting in persistent seizures and a great decline in quality of life. This highlights the urgent need for alternative or adjunctive therapeutic strategies. Carbohydrate-restricted diets have emerged as promising adjunctive treatments for epilepsy. However, while the efficacy of these diets has been well-established in pediatric populations, their effectiveness on adult DRE patients remains underexplored. This study aims to evaluate

The Effect of Low-Carbohydrate Diet on Macrovascular and Microvascular Endothelial Function is Not Affected by the Provision of Caloric Restriction in Women with Obesity: A Randomized Study.

Obesity impairs both macro- and microvascular endothelial function due to decreased bioavailability of nitric oxide. Current evidence on the effect of low-carbohydrate (LC) diet on endothelial function is conflicting and confounded by the provision of caloric restriction (CR). We tested the hypothesis that LC without CR diet, but not LC with CR diet, would improve macro- and microvascular endothelial function in women with obesity. Twenty-one healthy women with obesity (age: 33 ± 2 years, body mass index: 33.0 ± 0.6 kg/m2; mean ± SEM) were randomly assigned to receive either a LC diet (~10% ca

Impact of Eating a Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet on Cortical Atrophy in a Cross-Section of Amyloid Positive Patients with Alzheimer's Disease: A Small Sample Study.

BACKGROUND: A carbohydrate-restricted diet aimed at lowering insulin levels has the potential to slow Alzheimer's disease (AD). Restricting carbohydrate consumption reduces insulin resistance, which could improve glucose uptake and neural health. A hallmark feature of AD is widespread cortical thinning; however, no study has demonstrated that lower net carbohydrate (nCHO) intake is linked to attenuated cortical atrophy in patients with AD and confirmed amyloidosis. OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that individuals with AD and confirmed amyloid burden eating a carbohydrate-restricted diet h
