Adherence to a paleolithic diet and paleolithic-like lifestyle is associated with lower colorectal cancer risk.

PURPOSE: Evidence regarding the associations between the paleolithic diet (PD) score, the paleolithic-like lifestyle (PLL) score, and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk remains limited. This study aimed to investigate these associations in a Chinese population. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2792 CRC cases and 2785 matched controls in a large-scale case–control study. The PD score was constructed based on 14 dietary components, while the PLL score integrated the PD score with physical activity, body mass index, and smoking. Multivariable unconditional logistic regression models were used to estimate

[Evaluation of biological and clinical potential of paleolithic diet].

Accumulating evidences suggest that foods that were regularly consumed during the human primates and evolution, in particular during the Paleolithic era (2.6-0.01 x 10(6) years ago), may be optimal for the prevention and treatment of some chronic diseases. It has been postulated that fundamental changes in the diet and other lifestyle conditions that occurred after the Neolithic Revolution, and more recently with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution are too recent taking into account the evolutionary time scale for the human genome to have completely adjust. Paleolithic diet during pregnancy-A potential beneficial effect on metabolic indices and birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Paleolithic diet has recently gained popularity due to its presumed health benefits. The favorable metabolic effects of this diet were assessed in non-pregnant population but its impact during pregnancy remains to be evaluated. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study comparing two groups. Group A comprised of women with singleton low-risk pregnancy adherent to paleolithic diet throughout gestation (n = 37). Group B comprised low risk pregnant women on a regular diet (n = 39). Women were excluded if they had low adherence to diet, started paleolithic diet during pregnancy, and h

Association between Paleolithic diet fraction and systemic low-grade chronic inflammation in the Malmö diet and cancer study cohort.

PURPOSE: The Paleolithic Diet Fraction (PDF) estimates the proportion of absolute dietary intake derived from food groups included in the Paleolithic diet. In the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study (MDCS), higher PDF and lower systemic low-grade chronic inflammation (SLGCI) have been associated with lower cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality. We examined associations between PDF and SLGCI in the MDCS. METHODS: The study population (n = 23,250; 63% women; ages 44-74 years) excluded participants with prior coronary events, diabetes, stroke, high-grade inflammation, or missing baseline covariate dat

Eating Pattern and Nutritional Risks among People with Multiple Sclerosis Following a Modified Paleolithic Diet.

Preliminary studies suggest that a modified Paleolithic diet may benefit symptoms of fatigue in progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). However, this diet restricts the consumption of eggs, dairy, and gluten-containing grains, which may increase the risk of micronutrient deficiencies. Therefore, we evaluated the nutritional safety of this diet among people with progressive MS. Three nonconsecutive 24-h dietary recalls were collected from (n = 19) progressive MS participants in the final months of a diet intervention study and analyzed using Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR) software. Food

Exploring late Paleolithic and Mesolithic diet in the Eastern Alpine region of Italy through multiple proxies.

OBJECTIVES: The analysis of prehistoric human dietary habits is key for understanding the effects of paleoenvironmental changes on the evolution of cultural and social human behaviors. In this study, we compare results from zooarchaeological, stable isotope and dental calculus analyses as well as lower second molar macrowear patterns to gain a broader understanding of the diet of three individuals who lived between the end of the Late Pleistocene and the Early Holocene (ca., 17-8 ky cal BP) in the Eastern Alpine region of Italy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyze individuals buried at the site

Nutrient Composition Comparison between a Modified Paleolithic Diet for Multiple Sclerosis and the Recommended Healthy U.S.-Style Eating Pattern.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease that attacks the central nervous system. Evidence-based dietary guidelines do not exist for MS; the default advice is to follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA). A modified Paleolithic Wahls Elimination (WahlsElim) diet promoted for MS excludes grains and dairy and encourages 9+ cups fruits and vegetables (F/V) and saturated fat for cooking. This study evaluated the nutritional adequacy of seven-day menus and modeled them with varying amounts of F/V for comparison with the DGA Healthy US-Style Eating Pattern (HEP) for ages 31⁻50 year

Dietary approaches to treat MS-related fatigue: comparing the modified Paleolithic (Wahls Elimination) and low saturated fat (Swank) diets on perceived fatigue in persons with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is one of the most disabling symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) and contributes to diminishing quality of life. Although currently available interventions have had limited success in relieving MS-related fatigue, clinically significant reductions in perceived fatigue severity have been reported in a multimodal intervention pilot study that included a Paleolithic diet in addition to stress reduction, exercise, and electrical muscle stimulation. An optimal dietary approach to reducing MS-related fatigue has not been identified. To establish the specific effects of diet on MS

Paleolithic nutrition for metabolic syndrome: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Paleolithic nutrition, which has attracted substantial public attention lately because of its putative health benefits, differs radically from dietary patterns currently recommended in guidelines, particularly in terms of its recommendation to exclude grains, dairy, and nutritional products of industry. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated whether a Paleolithic nutritional pattern improves risk factors for chronic disease more than do other dietary interventions. DESIGN: We conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared the Paleolithic nutritional pattern w

Impacts of carbohydrate-restricted diets on micronutrient intakes and status: A systematic review.

A systematic review of published evidence on micronutrient intake/status with carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRD) was conducted in Web of Science, Medline, Embase, Scopus, CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov up to October 2018. We identified 10 studies: seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) ("Atkins"-style, n = 5; "Paleolithic" diets, n = 2), two Atkins-style noncontrolled trials and one cross-sectional study. Prescribed carbohydrate varied 4% to 34% of energy intake. Only one noncontrolled trial prescribed multivitamin supplements. Dietary intakes/status were reported over 2 to 104 weeks, wit

Neandertal versus Modern Human Dietary Responses to Climatic Fluctuations.

The Neandertal lineage developed successfully throughout western Eurasia and effectively survived the harsh and severely changing environments of the alternating glacial/interglacial cycles from the middle of the Pleistocene until Marine Isotope Stage 3. Yet, towards the end of this stage, at the time of deteriorating climatic conditions that eventually led to the Last Glacial Maximum, and soon after modern humans entered western Eurasia, the Neandertals disappeared. Western Eurasia was by then exclusively occupied by modern humans. We use occlusal molar microwear texture analysis to examine a

Dietary regimens and cognitive function in multiple sclerosis: a systematic review.

Cognitive impairment is a common and debilitating complication of multiple sclerosis (MS), but non-pharmacological strategies such as diet for its management have not yet been fully explored. The aim of this review is to synthesize the evidence on the relationship between diet and cognitive outcomes in people with MS. Clinical interventional and observational studies evaluating the association between the diet and cognitive outcomes in MS were considered. The diets most frequently evaluated were Mediterranean (n = 3), modified Paleolithic/Wahls (n = 3), Swank (n = 1), ketogenic (n = 2), and ti

Perceptions of the effects of following specific diets among people with multiple sclerosis: A web scraping analysis of the multiple sclerosis subreddit.

BACKGROUND: Dietary modifications are commonly reported by people with multiple sclerosis (MS). While preliminary studies suggest benefits of several diets on MS symptoms and quality of life, little real-world evidence exists supporting these preliminary findings. OBJECTIVE: To assess dietary modifications and their perceived positive and negative effects as reported by users of the MS subreddit on the social media platform, Reddit. METHODS: Discussion threads on the r/MultipleSclerosis subreddit containing the words 'diet', 'dietitian', or 'dietician' were extracted from inception to the da
