Sodium values of Chinese condiments and their use in sodium-restricted diets.

Counseling a Chinese patient on a low-sodium diet can be an arduous task for the dietitian. Special consideration of cultural beliefs, food preferences, and food practices must be incorporated into the individualized instruction. Equally important is the need for familiarity with the sodium values of frequently consumed foods and condiments indigenous to the Chinese population. To date, published sodium determinations for such items are quite limited. Representative samples of commonly used Chinese seasonings and sauces were collected. Analysis was performed by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy.

Hyponatremia associated with paroxetine induced by sodium-restricted diet and hypotonic saline.

CASE DESCRIPTION: An 89-year-old woman taking paroxetine was admitted to our hospital for femoral neck fracture; her diet became sodium restricted due to hypertension. After admission, the femoral head replacement was performed and hypotonic saline was administered over 2 days. On the fifth day after the operation, severe hyponatremia was observed and treated with oral fluid restriction, furosemide, sodium chloride and paroxetine discontinuance. In a few days, serum sodium concentration returned to baseline level. CONCLUSIONS: Besides risk factors for SIADH, a sodium-restricted diet and infus

Additive effects of a sodium chloride restricted diet and furosemide administration in healthy dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of a low or high sodium (Na) diet with or without furosemide administration on plasma electrolyte concentrations and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in healthy dogs. ANIMALS: 20 healthy adult dogs. PROCEDURE: Dogs were randomly allotted to 4 groups of 5 dogs each as follows: dogs fed a low Na diet (0.08% Na and 0.8% chloride [CI] on a dry matter [DM] basis); dogs fed a low Na diet with added NaCl (1.0% Na and 2.2% Cl on a DM basis); dogs fed a low Na diet and treated with furosemide (2 mg/kg of body weight, PO, q 12 h); and dogs fed a low Na diet

Clinical, echocardiographic, and neurohormonal effects of a sodium-restricted diet in dogs with heart failure.

The use of low-sodium diets in dogs with heart failure is common practice, but randomized, double-blind studies have not been conducted to examine the benefits or problems with this approach. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a low-sodium diet on clinical, echocardiographic, and neurohormonal parameters in dogs with heart failure. Dogs with stable chronic heart failure were fed exclusively a low-sodium (LS) and a moderate-sodium (MS) diet for 4 weeks each in a randomized, double-blind, crossover design. At days 0, 28, and 56, echocardiography and thoracic radiography we

Induction of intrauterine growth restriction with a low-sodium diet fed to pregnant rats.

OBJECTIVE: A low-sodium diet fed to female rats before mating through parturition leads to pups of lower weight. We characterized the effect of low dietary sodium during the last week of gestation (after fetal organogenesis) on fetal and maternal homeostasis. STUDY DESIGN: Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to a control group or to a group fed a low-sodium diet from gestational days 15 through 22. Systolic blood pressures were measured throughout pregnancy. On day 22 plasma volume was measured and blood samples were taken for electrolyte and hormonal measurements. Fetal and p

Restrictive diets have a beneficial impact on dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis in male mice.

BACKGROUND: Previously, we assessed the impact of restrictive diets, including caloric restriction (CR), intermittent fasting (IF), or fasting-mimicking diet (FMD), on a healthy gastrointestinal tract. We revealed that each of the diets shows anti-inflammatory outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to verify the diets' applicability in treating colitis. METHODS: We exposed a mouse model with mild chronic dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis to ad libitum control feeding, CR, IF, or FMD. The collected samples were analyzed for markers of inflammation. RESULTS: The diets reduced

Extensive reorganization of primary afferent projections into the gustatory brainstem induced by feeding a sodium-restricted diet during development: less is more.

Neural development is especially vulnerable to environmental influences during periods of neurogenesis and rapid maturation. In fact, short periods of environmental manipulations confined to embryonic development lead to significant changes in morphology and function. A guiding principal emerging from studies of sensory systems is that experimentally induced effects are most dramatic in higher neural levels (e.g., cortex) and primarily involve postnatal synaptic refinements. In contrast to other sensory systems, the gustatory system is particularly susceptible to the effects of deprivation muc

The effect of combined therapy with captopril, furosemide, and a sodium-restricted diet on serum electrolyte concentrations and renal function in normal dogs and dogs with congestive heart failure.

Captopril, furosemide, and a sodium-restricted diet were administered to 6 normal dogs and 10 dogs with congestive heart failure. Serum electrolyte concentrations and renal function were monitored in both groups. In the normal dogs, no clinically meaningful changes in serum electrolyte, urea nitrogen, or creatinine concentrations developed during therapy with a sodium-restricted diet and 4 weeks each of furosemide alone, captopril alone, or furosemide plus captopril. Three of 6 normal dogs on furosemide and a sodium-restricted diet had at least one serum potassium concentration above the refer

Sodium balance and the reflex regulation of baroreceptor function.

The study of the mechanisms by which variations in salt intake affect cardiovascular function has progressed from characterizing hemodynamic and renal effects to investigating the role of sodium (Na+) on sympathetic neuronal function. The consequences of altered sodium balance on the regulation of vasomotor activity and the integration of baroreceptor reflexes is a relatively neglected area of research. This report summarizes the significance of the disturbance in baroreceptor function that is associated with alterations in Na+ homeostasis and assesses the possible mechanisms in a study of the

Biochemical correction in the syndrome of hypertension and hyperkalaemia by severe dietary salt restriction suggests renin-aldosterone suppression critical in pathophysiology.

1. Plasma potassium and chloride concentrations were raised and plasma renin activity, aldosterone, bicarbonate and arterial pH were reduced in two brothers with the syndrome of hypertension and hyperkalaemia with normal glomerular filtration rate (Gordon's syndrome), on unrestricted or moderately restricted sodium diets. 2. These abnormalities were corrected in both patients within 10 days of severe sodium restriction. 3. Pressor sensitivity to cold and angiotensin II decreased on low sodium diet, associated with a fall in blood pressure. 4. Increasing distal tubular sodium delivery by infusi

Does sodium play an adverse role in hypertension?

It is clear that salt is known to be a health hazard from the ancient times. Sodium intake, which was minimal during evolution, increased significantly with the civilization. The rise in prevalence of hypertension in populations with increased consumption of salt suggested a casual relationship. However, several of these studies showed conflicting results. Many investigators agree that salt-sensitive persons often have a family history of hypertension. Such individuals possess a sodium transport inhibitor in the arterial smooth muscle cells, which affects their sodium handling (as compared to

Moderate sodium restriction and various diuretics in the treatment of hypertension.

Changes in total body potassium level and blood pressure (BP) were determined in multiple studies on 12 hypertensive subjects ingesting a diet either moderately restricted or higher in sodium. On both diets, the following diuretics were randomly given for four-week intervals: chlorthalidone, hydrochlorothiazide, or furosemide. Total body exchangeable potassium level fell 225 mEq with lower sodium intake and 455 mEq with higher intake, combining all diuretics. Chlorthalidone caused more potassium wastage than the other diuretics. The average falls in mean BP were 13.9 mm Hg with the lower sodiu

Changes in the circadian rhythm of blood pressure in primary aldosteronism in response to dietary sodium restriction and adrenalectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Recently, we found that sodium restriction restored the circadian rhythm of blood pressure from non-dippers to dippers in patients with a sodium-sensitive type of essential hypertension. In the present study, we investigated the effects of sodium restriction on the circadian blood pressure rhythm in patients with primary aldosteronism, a typical sodium-sensitive form of secondary hypertension. DESIGN AND METHODS: We performed 24 h blood pressure monitoring in eight patients with primary aldosteronism due to unilateral adenoma (Conn's syndrome) during normal-sodium (7-12 g/day of Na

Blood-pressure response to moderate sodium restriction and to potassium supplementation in mild essential hypertension.

To determine whether moderate restriction of dietary sodium content or supplementation of potassium intake reduces blood-pressure in patients with mild essential hypertension, twelve patients were put on three different diets--a control diet (180 mmol sodium/day), a sodium restricted diet (80 mmol/day). Each diet was taken for at least 4 weeks and the sequence of the regimens was randomised. At the completion of each regimen intra-arterial pressure was recorded continuously, and vasoactive hormones were measured hourly, for 24 h, under standardised conditions, in hospital. Hold the Salt: History of Salt Restriction as a First-line Therapy for Menière's Disease.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the historical origins of the usage of the salt restriction diet as an intervention for Menière's disease (MD). METHODS: Articles on MD and salt restriction were identified using Pubmed and Google scholar. Original manuscripts from 19th and 20th century as well as selected otological textbooks in English, German, and French were also reviewed. RESULTS: The oldest recommendation of salt restriction in the literature was by Dederding (1889-1955) in 1929. She and her mentor, Sydney Holger Mygind (1884-1970), believed MD was caused by dysfunctional water metabolism. In s
