Diet drugs and cardiac valvulopathy: a survey of dental patients.

The recent finding that several appetite suppressant drugs (fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine) were linked to cardiac valvular disease in a significant percentage of the population led to their voluntary withdrawal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a series of recommendations in 1997 for evaluating dental patients who had taken these drugs. Since that time, several studies have further investigated the prevalence of valvular abnormalities. This information is crucial because of the problem of dentally associated bacterial endocarditis. This study surveyed more than 1,300 de

The Influence of Diet on Tinnitus Severity: Results of a Large-Scale, Online Survey.

Optimization of dietary intake is an essential component in the multidimensional effort to prevent and manage chronic disease. Recently, demand has increased for nutrition-focused management strategies for chronic tinnitus. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate 10 dietary items for their association with changes in subjective tinnitus severity. A secondary aim was to develop an algorithm to better identify those individuals who might benefit from dietary modification strategies. A total of 5017 anonymous users of the TinnitusTalk forum completed an online survey regarding how various d

Risk, time, and diet quality: Evidence from a general population survey.

This paper explores the relationships between overall diet quality and attitudes toward risk and time using a general population survey. We combine a food frequency questionnaire and a choice-based preference module to elicit individual risk and time preferences. The online questionnaire was administered to a socioeconomic panel representative of the French population. We show that risk and time preferences are associated with individual heterogeneity in key aspects of diet quality, a result that holds across a wide range of robustness checks. Using a hierarchical Bayes framework, we jointly e

Evaluation of diet and life style in etiopathogenesis of senile dementia: A survey study.

Mind and body are inseparable entities and influences each other until death. Many factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, negative thoughts, unhealthy life style, unwholesome diet etc., disturb mental and physical wellbeing. Senile dementia is the mental deterioration, i.e, loss of intellectual ability associated with old age. It causes progressive deterioration of mental faculties, e.g., memory, intellect, attention, thinking, comprehension and personality, with preservation of normal level of consciousness. Two major types of senile dementia have been identified, namely that due to gen

Ethnic differences in thiamine status persist after adjusting for diet; findings from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Thiamine (vitamin B1) status might play a role in cognition and mental health. Recent research suggests that there are ethnic differences in thiamine status. We aimed to test the hypothesis that black individuals have a higher risk of thiamine deficiency than white individuals, based on the erythrocyte transketolase activity coefficient (ETKAC), and assess differences in thiamine intake, using nutritional survey data. METHODS: We used the published data of the UK's National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling programme (2008-2019) and examined differences in the ETKAC bet

Conjoint analysis of social inequality indicators in diet and physical activity app (non-)users: Representative online surveys in Austria, Germany and Italy.

BACKGROUND: Mobile interventions for health promotion (mHealth) are promising behaviour change tools. Yet they are infrequently used, and research suggests that use may be unevenly distributed in the population, potentially widening existing health inequalities. OBJECTIVE: This study tested for individual and joint associations between socio-demographic characteristics and nutrition and physical activity app use. METHODOLOGY: Nationally representative samples for Austria, Germany and Italy were recruited with N = 1974 participants in total. In an online survey, participants reported on nutri

Nutrition Support in Dysphagia: Japan Nationwide Hospital Survey on Nutritional Values, Diet Characteristics, and Dietitians' Roles in Texture-Modified Diets.

This study aimed to investigate the current nutrition support practices for patients with dysphagia in Japanese hospitals and to identify gaps between research-based recommendations and clinical practice. A nationwide questionnaire survey was conducted from April to June 2023 targeting 5,376 hospitals with inpatient beds. The questionnaire, developed by the Japanese Working Group on Integrated Nutrition for Dysphagic People, included items on hospital characteristics and nutrition support systems. Hospitals that consented to participate completed an online questionnaire by a representative die

Health outcomes, environmental impacts, and diet costs of adherence to the EAT-Lancet Diet in China in 1997-2015: a health and nutrition survey.

BACKGROUND: In 2019, the EAT-Lancet Commission proposed a global reference dietary pattern. Although research on the EAT-Lancet reference diet and its associations with mortality, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, dietary environmental impacts, and cost of diets is increasing, studies done in low-income and middle-income countries remain scarce. This study aimed to assess the health outcomes, environmental impacts, and dietary costs of adherence to the EAT-Lancet reference diet in China. METHODS: In this health and nutrition survey study, 16 029 participants from the China Health and N

Sleeping green: an Italian survey for the assessment of the relationship between sleep and vegetarian diet.

PURPOSE: Plant-based diets are beneficial for health and sleep. Nevertheless, results on the relationship between entirely vegetarian (veg) diets and sleep are scarce and heterogeneous, and many relevant variables are rarely considered. We hypothesize that veg diets may be differently related to several sleep measures considering the role of other intervening factors. METHODS: We used an online survey to collect self-reported data about dietary patterns, sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, sleepiness, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) risk, and sleep-related movement disorders. Adherence to a Mediterranean Diet and Thyroid Function in Obesity: A Cross-Sectional Apulian Survey.

Much research suggests that Mediterranean eating habits and lifestyle contribute to counteract the risk of chronic diseases while promoting longevity, but little information is available on the effects of the Mediterranean diet (Med-Diet) on thyroid function, particularly among overweight/obese subjects. Nevertheless, consistent data reported a slight increase in serum levels of the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and a higher rate of conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3) in obesity. This cross-sectional study was aimed at investigating the relationship between adherence to t
