Dietary fiber.

Dietary fiber is plant-derived material that is resistant to digestion by human alimentary enzymes. Fiber may be divided into two broad chemical classes: 1) non-alpha-glucan polysaccharides (cellulose, hemicelluloses, and pectins) and 2) lignins. Dietary fiber behaves within the gastrointestinal tract as a polymer matrix with variable physicochemical properties including susceptibility to bacterial fermentation, water-holding capacity, cation-exchange, and adsorptive functions. These properties determine physiological actions of fiber and are dependent on the physical and chemical composition

Health benefits of dietary fiber.

Dietary fiber intake provides many health benefits. However, average fiber intakes for US children and adults are less than half of the recommended levels. Individuals with high intakes of dietary fiber appear to be at significantly lower risk for developing coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and certain gastrointestinal diseases. Increasing fiber intake lowers blood pressure and serum cholesterol levels. Increased intake of soluble fiber improves glycemia and insulin sensitivity in non-diabetic and diabetic individuals. Fiber supplementation in obese individuals

Intestinal microbiota-mediated dietary fiber bioavailability.

Dietary fiber is a kind of carbohydrate that cannot be digested and absorbed by the small intestine of humans but can be fermented in all or part of the large intestine and is significantly healthy for the human body. With the improvement in living standards, people pay more attention to their intestinal health, and the relationship between dietary fiber, intestinal microecological and body physiological balances, and their molecular connection mechanism has become a research hot spot. In this study, we reviewed its mediated bioavailability to provide a basis for the rational classification of

Dietary Fiber, Atherosclerosis, and Cardiovascular Disease.

Observational studies have shown that dietary fiber intake is associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. Dietary fiber is a non-digestible form of carbohydrates, due to the lack of the digestive enzyme in humans required to digest fiber. Dietary fibers and lignin are intrinsic to plants and are classified according to their water solubility properties as either soluble or insoluble fibers. Water-soluble fibers include pectin, gums, mucilage, fructans, and some resistant starches. They are present in some fruits, vegetables, oats, and barley. Soluble fibers have been shown to low

Irritable bowel syndrome and dietary fiber.

The effects of an increase in dietary fiber include: (a) More frequent stools, (b) more voluminous stools, (c) an alteration in the fecal flora, (d) an increase in fecal sterol excretion, and, it appears likely, (e) a reduction in intraluminal pressures in the sigmoid colon. Epidemiologic data comparing global differences in prevalence of certain diseases with the fiber content of diets suggest that there may be a relationship between the two. With a certain amount of post-ad hoc reasoning, it can be shown that some of the known effects of fiber could account for differences in disease prevale

Advances in Dietary Fiber: Classification, Functional Properties, Interactions, and Valorization of Dietary Fiber from Food Processing By-Products.

During food processing, large quantities of by-products are generated, including seeds, fruit peels, pomace, shells, and other plant-derived residues. These by-products are usually rich in dietary fiber (DF) and possess significant potential for nutritional and functional applications. Dietary fiber plays an important role in maintaining human health and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases. At the same time, the incorporation of dietary fiber into food systems can effectively improve the physicochemical properties of foods and enhance thei

Dietary fiber may benefit chondrocyte activity maintenance.

The understanding of the link between the gut-bone axis is growing yearly, but the mechanisms involved are not yet clear. Our study analyzed the role of Sestrin2 (SESN2)pathway in the gut-bone axis. We established an osteoarthritis (OA) model in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats using the anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) procedure, followed by a dietary intervention with varying levels of dietary fiber content for 8 weeks. By 16S rRNA sequencing of the gut microbiota, we found that high dietary fiber (HDF) intake could significantly increase the Bacillota-dominant gut microbiota. Meanwhile

Dietary fibers affecting gastrointestinal immunity.

Dietary fibers, including chitin, have a major impact on gastrointestinal (GI) physiology and immunity. Two recent articles, by Parrish et al. and Kim et al., credit depletion of dietary fibers or supplementation with chitin, with negative and positive effects, respectively, on the immune system of the murine digestive tract. This has relevant implications for food allergies and systemic metabolism.

Dietary fibers and associated phytochemicals in cereals.

Epidemiological studies have linked whole-grain (WG) cereal consumption to a reduced risk of developing several chronic diseases-coronary heart disease, arteriosclerosis, type-2 diabetes, and some form of cancers. The underlying physiological mechanisms behind the protective effects of WG are unclear, but can most likely be assigned to a concerted action of dietary fiber (DF) and a wide variety of phytochemicals. Physiologically, it is important that soluble nonstarch polysaccharides contribute to higher viscosity in the small intestine as this may influence rate and extent of digestion and ab

Sulfated dietary fiber protects gut microbiota from antibiotics.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotics, while essential for combating pathogens, also disrupt commensal bacteria, leading to gut microbiota imbalance and associated diseases. However, strategies to mitigate such collateral damage remain largely underexplored. RESULT: In this study, we found that fucoidan, a marine polysaccharide derived from brown seaweed, provides broad-spectrum growth protection against multiple classes of antibiotics for human gut microbial isolates in vitro and for fecal communities ex vivo. This protective effect is dependent on the structural integrity, molecular weight, and sulfur co

Bacteroides acidifaciens: Linking dietary fiber to liver health.

While innumerous associative microbiome studies have been published, mechanistic links between the microbiome and host physiology remain much scarcer. In Cell Host & Microbe, Shen et al. report the effect of soluble dietary fibers in alcohol-related liver disease. Through microbiome remodeling, dietary fiber triggers upregulation of liver ornithine aminotransferase and a subsequent reduction in hepatic damage.

Primary dietary prevention: is the fiber story over?

Colorectal cancer is a major cause of morbidity in developed countries, and epidemiological and experimental research suggests that environmental factors, particularly diet, may play a key etiologic role. Among the various dietary factors that have been proposed to affect the risk and progression of colon cancer, dietary fiber has been of greatest interest, due to the effects of fiber on the function of the large bowel. Dietary fiber is a heterogeneous group of compounds, consisting of the remnants of plant cells resistant to hydrolysis by human alimentary enzymes. Several case-control studies

Complex enzyme hydrolysis of okara to enrich soluble dietary fiber and peptides and insights into the dietary fiber-protein interaction mechanism.

The interaction between dietary fiber and protein inhibits the conversion of insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) into soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and the hydrolysis of okara protein. Viscozyme® L and pepsin were used for sequential enrichment SDF and peptides, and the interaction mechanisms between the fiber and protein were investigated by analyzing the structures of IDF, SDF, peptides, and their mixed systems. After complex enzyme hydrolysis, the SDF/IDF ratio and peptide content of okara reached 0.48 and 54.38%, respectively. Compared with hydrolysis using Viscozyme® L or pepsin alone, complex en

Dietary fiber in pancreatic disease: effect of high fiber diet on fat malabsorption in pancreatic insufficiency and in vitro study of the interaction of dietary fiber with pancreatic enzymes.

The effect of high fiber diet on fat malabsorption was evaluated in twelve patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency secondary to chronic alcoholic pancreatitis. Additionally, the effect of dietary fiber on pancreatic enzymes was examined in vitro, employing different concentrations of cellulose, pectin, and wheat bran incubated with amylase, lipase, and trypsin. Ingestion of a high fiber diet was associated with a small but significant (p less than 0.01) increase in fecal weight and fecal fat excretion. All patients complained of increased abdominal flatulence with high fiber diet, howe

Therapeutic Applications of Dietary Fiber: Managing Fiber-responsive Gastrointestinal Conditions in Dogs and Cats.

Gastrointestinal disorders are some of the most common diseases in dogs and cats, and treatment can be challenging. Practicing clinicians who understand the physiochemical properties of dietary fiber, the clinical scenarios in which fiber may be effective, and how to appropriately utilize dietary fiber in dogs and cats can see significant improvement in patients' clinical signs. Specifically, core gastrointestinal concerns including acute diarrhea, chronic diarrhea, hairball vomiting, and constipation may be effectively managed via alterations in dietary fiber intake.

The Effects of Dietary Fiber and High-Dietary-Fiber Diets on Body Weight Regulation and Lipid Metabolism in Athletes: A Narrative Review.

The beneficial effects of dietary fiber (DF) and high-dietary-fiber diets (high-DF diets) on body weight (BW) regulation and lipid metabolism have been extensively investigated in the general population. However, due to the unique metabolic adaptations of athletes, exercise-specific nutritional requirements, and enhanced gastrointestinal sensitivity caused by intensive training and competition, the evidence for their application and in-depth mechanism remains limited. This review synthesizes current evidence on the effects of DF and high-DF diets on BW regulation and lipid metabolism in athlet
