Digital dermatitis: report of an outbreak.

An outbreak of digital dermatitis in a dairy herd in the Gauteng province of South Africa is described in which 72% of the lactating herd was affected. Many of the affected cows showed a severe lameness and a drop in milk production. Other complications included heel horn erosion, under-running of heel horn and boxy claws. The diagnosis was made on the typical clinical appearance of the condition and the presence of spirochaetes on histopathological sections from biopsy material. The condition responded to spraying affected feet with an oxytetracycline mixture after cleaning with water using a

Dermatitis herpetiformis presenting as digital petechiae.

We present a 15-year-old female patient with a 6-month history of recurrent painful petechiae on the fingers and feet. Trauma or pressure were denied, but she reported recurrent tonsillitis and urinary tract infections and a single event of bilateral scotoma. Extensive investigations (e.g., echocardiography) for a suspected diagnosis of septic emboli were unremarkable. Routine histopathology, direct and indirect immunofluorescence, and esophagogastroduodenoscopy led to the diagnosis of dermatitis herpetiformis. The therapeutic strategy comprised gluten-free diet and dapsone to alleviate the sy

The etiology of digital dermatitis in ruminants: recent perspectives.

Digital dermatitis (DD) is a multifactorial polymicrobial infectious disease originally described in dairy cattle, but is increasingly recognized in beef cattle, sheep, and more recently, elk and goats. Clinical bovine lesions typically appear on the plantar surface of the hind foot from the interdigital space and heel bulb to the accessory digits, with a predilection for skin-horn junctions. Lesions present as a painful ulcerative acute or chronic inflammatory process with differing degrees of severity. This variability reflects disease progression and results in a number of different clinica

Missing pieces of the puzzle to effectively control digital dermatitis.

Since the first report of bovine digital dermatitis (DD) in 1974, there is a large body of the literature published; however, effective prevention and control of the disease remain elusive. Although many aspects of the pathogenesis of DD have been investigated, even some of the most basic questions such as the aetiology of this disease remain under debate. Treponema spp. have been strongly associated with DD lesions and occur in abundance in advanced lesions; however, efforts to induce disease with pure cultures of these organisms have been largely underwhelming and inconsistent. Furthermore,

Systemic contact dermatitis due to amethocaine following digital rectal examination.

Systemic contact dermatitis is a dermatitis that may occur in previously sensitized individuals when they are re-exposed to the allergen. Although many drugs have been implicated as a cause of systemic contact dermatitis, local anesthetics derived from caines have been rarely reported. We present a case of systemic contact dermatitis after a digital rectal examination with a urological lubricant containing amethocaine.

AI-Driven Digital Tools for Atopic Dermatitis: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) affects around 20% of children and up to 10% of adults. Its fluctuating course, severe pruritus, and impact on sleep, mental health, and daily functioning highlight the need for innovative approaches to diagnosis and disease management. Digital health technologies have rapidly expanded to fill this gap, yet their clinical readiness remains uncertain. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aims to map AI-driven digital tools for AD, classify their functionalities, assess methodologies, and identify challenges and opportunities for real-world implementation. Phenotypic and genomic study of digital dermatitis in UK Holstein heifers.

BACKGROUND: Digital dermatitis (DD) is a global infectious hoof disease causing lameness in cattle. The condition has been studied extensively in milking cows. The present study deployed data from repeated clinical examinations of young heifers to develop DD phenotypes reflecting the disease prevalence and progression. The newly defined traits were then subjected to single-step genome-wide association analyses to assess their genetic profile. Data were collected during four monthly clinical examinations of 921 Holstein heifers aged less than 15 months. The M-score system was used to assess hoo

Local and Systemic Inflammation in Finnish Dairy Cows with Digital Dermatitis.

Digital dermatitis is a disease of the digital skin and causes lameness and welfare problems in dairy cattle. This study assessed the local and systemic inflammatory responses of cows with different digital dermatitis lesions and compared macroscopical and histological findings. Cow feet (n = 104) were evaluated macroscopically and skin biopsies histologically. Serum samples were analyzed for acute phase proteins (serum amyloid A and haptoglobin) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1 beta, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha). Cows with macroscopically graded active lesions

Impact of digital dermatitis on locomotion and gait traits of beef cattle.

Digital dermatitis (DD) is an infectious skin disease and a major cause of lameness that significantly impacts cattle productivity and welfare. However, DD does not always result in lameness and lameness scoring systems are not specific to hoof pathologies. Digital dermatitis detection protocols could be improved by including gait traits most related to DD. The aims of this study were to 1) determine the association between DD M-stage ("M" for Mortellaro), locomotion, and gait traits: arched back (AB), asymmetric gait (AG), head bobbing (HB), tracking up (TU), and reluctance to bear weight (WB

Phenotypic and proteomic characterization of treponemes associated with bovine digital dermatitis.

Bovine digital dermatitis (BDD) is a multifactorial polymicrobial infectious disease associated with multiple species and phylotypes of treponemes. However, despite the abundance of molecular signatures for treponemes that are identified in bovine lesions, relatively few isolates are cultured, and even fewer have been characterized at the level of protein expression. Here we report the successful isolation and characterization of novel strains of T. brennaborense and T. phagedenis from cases of BDD in Iowa dairy cows, and compare them to a well characterized strain of T. phagedenis, and the ty

Proinflammatory CD14highCD16low monocytes/macrophages prevail in Treponema phagedenis-associated bovine digital dermatitis.

Digital dermatitis (DD) is a skin disease in cattle characterized by painful inflammatory ulcerative lesions in the feet, mostly associated with local colonization by Treponema spp., including Treponema phagedenis. The reason why most DD lesions remain actively inflamed and progress to chronic conditions despite antibiotic treatment remains unknown. Herein, we show an abundant infiltration of proinflammatory (CD14highCD16low) monocytes/macrophages in active DD lesions, a skin response that was not mitigated by topical treatment with oxytetracycline. The associated bacterium, T. phagedenis, iso

The growth-stimulating factor of Treponema phagedenis from bovine digital dermatitis lesions.

Bovine digital dermatitis (BDD) is an infectious skin disease of the hoof characterized by painful ulcerations that cause lameness in dairy cattle. Cell-free supernatants (CFS) of Falsiporphyromonas endometrii predominantly isolated from BDD lesions had the highest growth-stimulating effect on Treponema phagedenis among BDD-associated bacteria. Butyric acid was detected at a concentration of 45.4 mM in CFS of F. endometrii, and the growth of T. phagedenis was significantly promoted by butyric acid supplementation.

Digital ulcerative lichenoid dermatitis in a patient receiving anti-PD-1 therapy.

Programmed cell death receptor 1 inhibitors (anti-PD-1) constitute a form of immunotherapy for the treatment of several cancers. They are associated with cutaneous immune-related adverse events (irAE), occurring in up to 50% of patients. Lichenoid dermatitis is frequent and several presentations have been described. Although attempts have been made to study these reactions, they are yet to be fully characterized and the relationship with tumor response is unclear. We describe a case of digital ulcerative lichenoid dermatitis resembling ulcerative cutaneous lichen planus that occurred during pe

Experimental Transmission of Bovine Digital Dermatitis to Sheep: Development of an Infection Model.

Digital dermatitis is an infectious cause of lameness primarily affecting cattle but also described in sheep, goats, and wild elk. Digital dermatitis is a polymicrobial infection, involving several Treponema species and other anaerobic bacteria. Although the exact etiology has not been demonstrated, a number of bacterial, host, and environmental factors are thought to contribute to disease development. To study host-bacterial interactions, a reproducible laboratory model of infection is required. The objective of this study was to demonstrate key aspects of bovine digital dermatitis lesions in

Altered microbiomes in bovine digital dermatitis lesions, and the gut as a pathogen reservoir.

Bovine digital dermatitis (DD) is the most important infectious disease associated with lameness in cattle worldwide. Since the disease was first described in 1974, a series of Treponema species concurrent with other microbes have been identified in DD lesions, suggesting a polymicrobial etiology. However, the pathogenesis of DD and the source of the causative microbes remain unclear. Here we characterized the microbiomes of healthy skin and skin lesions in dairy cows affected with different stages of DD and investigated the gut microbiome as a potential reservoir for microbes associated with

Detection of treponemes in digital dermatitis lesions of captive European bison (Bison bonasus).

A newly-discovered foot disease of unknown origin in captive European Bison (Bison bonasus) was recently detected at Berne Animal Park. Dermatitis of the interdigital cleft of varying degrees of severity was diagnosed in all animals (n = 10). The aim of this study was to describe the gross and histological lesions of the interdigital cleft found in 10 captive European bison and to identify involved potential pathogens in affected feet using molecular-based methods for Treponema spp., Dichelobacter nodosus and Fusobacterium necrophorum. Lesions were scored according to the degree of gross patho

Characterization of the Hoof Bacterial Communities of Active Digital Dermatitis Lesions in Feedlot Cattle.

Digital dermatitis (DD) is a costly hoof infection, causing lameness and pain in feedlot cattle. DD lesions can develop nonlinearly through a series of clinical stages, which can be classified by Dopfer's M-stage scoring system. This widely adopted lesion scoring system recognizes five DD stages, where M1 (early lesion), M2 (acute ulcerative lesion), and M4.1 (chronic proliferative lesion with new developing lesion) are considered active but separate stages of the disease. This study assessed the skin surface microbiota of the active DD lesions of feedlot cattle. The DD lesions from three comm

Survival of bovine digital dermatitis treponemes in conditions relevant to the host and farm environment.

OBJECTIVES: Bovine digital dermatitis (BDD), a painful infectious foot disease in dairy cattle, endemic in many countries worldwide, causes substantial economic and welfare impacts. Treponema spp. are considered key to BDD pathogenesis. To aid infection reservoir identification and control measure development, survival of BDD treponemes was investigated in different temperatures (4, 12, 20, 37, 45 and 60 °C), pH values (5-9.0), dairy cattle faeces and bedding types: straw shavings, sand, sand containing 5% lime (w/w) and recycled manure solids (RMS). Second-to-fourth digit ratio and seborrheic dermatitis in males: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis is a common disease characterized by the erythematous plaques with oily-yellow desquamation. Increased sebaceous gland activity by androgenic hormones has played a role in the etiology of the disease. The second-to-fourth digit (2D:4D) ratio is thought to be a marker of prenatal androgen exposure. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between 2D:4D ratios and seborrheic dermatitis in a male population. METHODS: Healthy male controls and patients with seborrheic dermatitis were included in this study. One hundred seborrheic dermatitis patients and 120 he
