A "Digital Divide" in information and technological literacy exists in Utah between small hospitals and clinics in rural areas and the larger health care institutions in the major urban area of the state. The goals of the outreach program of the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah address solutions to this disparity in partnership with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine-- Midcontinental Region, the Utah Department of Health, and the Utah Area Health Education Centers. In a circuit-rider approach, an outreach librarian offers classes and demonstrations

Telehealth has emerged as a transformative force in health care, offering unprecedented convenience, flexibility, and access. However, its benefits remain unevenly distributed, particularly among low-income, rural, older, and non-English-speaking populations. This literature review explores how telehealth's reliance on digital infrastructure, such as broadband access, device ownership, and digital literacy, can create new barriers that risk deepening existing health disparities. Drawing on recent studies, the review highlights how demographic and socioeconomic factors intersect with digital ex

Homeless adults experience increased risk of negative health outcomes, and technology-based interventions may provide an opportunity for improving health in this population. However, little is known about homeless adults' technology access and use. Utilizing data from a study of 421 homeless adults moving into PSH, this paper presents descriptive technology findings, and compares results to age-matched general population data. The vast majority (94%) currently owned a cell phone, although there was considerable past 3-month turnover in phones (56%) and phone numbers (55%). More than half curre

Using the 2022 National Health and Aging Trend Study data, we examined the digital divide among homebound and semi-homebound older adults. About 11% of older Medicare beneficiaries in 2022 were homebound or semi-homebound. Compared to non-homebound older adults, homebound older adults were significantly less likely to own a cellphone. Among those with any information and communication technology (ICT) device, homebound older adults were also less likely to have used email/texting and gone online. Older age, low income, dementia diagnosis, and moderate/severe depressive/anxiety symptoms contrib

Background: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is being spread at an unprecedented rate across the globe. Yet, new research suggests that digital divide is not only continuing but also deepening at the same time. After access to basic ICT equipment, it is now the lack of skills and quality of hardware and software that leads to a continuing digital divide. Digital divide which is specifically related to elderly is known as grey digital divide. Objectives: The focus of this paper is to review and analyze recent relevant research on grey digital divide which is fast emerging as a maj

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how patient characteristics are associated with telemedicine visit modality (video, phone, or converted from video to phone) and patient satisfaction, to better understand the digital divide in telemedicine.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study conducted at a tertiary care center during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (March-October 2020). Adult patients (≥18 years) who completed a telemedicine satisfaction survey following a visit during the study period were included. Visit modality was classified as video, phone, or converted (scheduled as video but complet

INTRODUCTION: Some health conditions and life experiences can create disclosure costs (ie, anticipated social costs of care-seeking), suppressing care-seeking in ways that logistical access alone cannot resolve. Digital infrastructure enabling telehealth access holds promise for reaching these populations because remote access reduces the visibility of care-seeking. Yet, device access remains a barrier, with little evidence on whether internet-enabled device distribution programs can expand care for high-disclosure-cost populations.
METHODS: Using an event study and difference-in-differences

BACKGROUND: For nearly a decade, the US Veterans Health Administration (VA) has distributed tablets to Veterans with access barriers who may benefit from video telehealth visits. Older Veterans' lower likelihood of tablet use relative to younger Veterans has prompted interest in factors influencing tablet utilization.
OBJECTIVES: We examined whether social support facilitates video telehealth utilization among older Veterans who received VA tablets.
RESEARCH DESIGN: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of electronic health record-linked survey data. We used multivariable logistic regressi

BACKGROUND: Digital health technologies have the potential to improve health outcomes in underserved settings. However, in low and middle-income countries with weak public health systems, unequal access to digital tools can worsen existing healthcare disparities. The DIG-EQUITY study explored the facilitators and barriers to equitable use of mobile and telehealth solutions for diabetes care in India, incorporating perspectives from people with diabetes, their family members (caregivers), healthcare providers, policymakers, and community organisations. METHODS: A qualitative design was employed

This study investigated how divergent sensorimotor experiences interact with task intention to influence touchscreen typing performance, kinematics, and strategy in smartphone users. Building on principles of motor learning and embodied cognition, we compared two generational cohorts: individuals whose sensorimotor development was primarily in the physical world, and those whose development occurred concurrently in both physical and digital environments. Participants typed the same sentences in two tasks: WhatsApp Chat (content generation) and Google Search (content consumption). 3D motion cap

Digital technologies have transformed healthcare, yet disparities persist, particularly among older adults and individuals with cancer. The digital divide encompasses not only access but also challenges in electronic communication and cognitive engagement, affecting health equity. This study examined the prevalence of three digital divide dimensions (Access, E-communication, and Cognitive Gaps) among U.S.adults with and without cancer and assessed their associations with sociodemographic factors, clinical characteristics, and self-rated health. Cross-sectional data from the 2022 Health Informa

BACKGROUND: The need for and adoption of eHealth programs are growing worldwide. However, access can be limited among patients with low socioeconomic backgrounds, often resulting in a so-called "digital divide" due to a mismatch between eHealth and target populations that can gain benefit. This digital divide can result in unsuccessful eHealth implementations, which is of critical importance to health care.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the opinions of elderly patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) about an existing pharmacy-based personalized patient web port

Digital pathology (DP) represents a major advance in global health, integrating digital whole-slide imaging, telepathology and clinical-grade artificial intelligence into cohesive workflows that can improve diagnostic accuracy and educational access. Realising these gains, however, depends on local infrastructure, governance, reimbursement and workforce capacity. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated DP uptake in some settings, but adoption remains highly uneven between high-resource settings (HRS) and low-resource settings (LRS), reflecting unequal infrastructure, workforce, policy and financing.

In today's society where there is an abundance of accessible, complex, and often false information, critical thinking (CT) is an essential skill so that citizens in general and students in particular can make complex decisions based on scientific evidence, rather than on prejudices, biases, and pre-established beliefs. In this context, the purpose of this study is to discover whether Active Learning (AL) methodology, using different technologies, contributes to improving the CT of the student body, applying it to the Digital Gender Divide (DGD). Three questionnaires were used to collect inform
