Liver mitochondria of copper-deficient and copper-loaded rats are with changed composition, ultrastructure and functions. The aim of the present work is to study the digitonin resistance of these mitochondria as an indicator for the changes in the membranes. In digitonin-permeabilized bovine adrenal medullary cells, Ca2+ (0.1-1.0 microM) caused an activation of tyrosine hydroxylase which was dependent on the presence of ATP. The role of calmodulin in exocytotic secretion was studied using digitonin-permeabilized bovine adrenal medullary chromaffin cells. Addition of calmodulin to the permeabilized cells increased Ca(2+)-dependent norepinephrine release in a dose-dependent manner.
