OBJECTIVES: Advanced pancreatic and gastric cancers are associated with high symptom burden and psychological distress, potentially threatening patients' sense of dignity. Although Dignity Therapy (DT) has mainly been used in end-of-life care, its potential role earlier in the disease trajectory is emerging. This exploratory study investigated the feasibility and potential impact of DT during active chemotherapy on emotional distress, dignity-related distress, and quality of life (QoL).
METHODS: Thirty patients with advanced pancreatic or gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy received a 3-se

OBJECTIVE: To investigate two mechanisms, patient-level narrative richness and provider-patient empathy, of positive outcomes following Dignity Therapy, to focus provider training and intervention delivery.
BACKGROUND: Dignity Therapy is a brief reminiscence-based psychotherapeutic intervention designed to help seriously ill patients preserve dignity, reduce distress, and improve quality of life. Identifying mechanisms through which the therapy works can improve training and delivery of this increasingly popular intervention.
METHODS: Outpatients living with cancer (N = 203; M = 65.80 years;

BACKGROUND: Dignity Therapy is a person-centered psychotherapeutic intervention designed for people approaching the end of life, fostering reflection on meaningful aspects of life and creating a testimonial legacy. Since 2011, randomized trials have demonstrated its value in addressing psychospiritual needs and preserving dignity in palliative care. However, no controlled studies have been conducted in Latin America to assess its effectiveness within local cultural contexts. METHODS: This is a protocol for an exploratory, randomized, parallel-group clinical trial (1:1 allocation) with an open-

As psychosocial treatments become increasingly important in palliative care, dignity therapy (DT) emerges as a promising intervention. This systematic review aims to synthesize and critically evaluate the evidence on DT interventions in adults with cancer by integrating findings from randomised controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-experimental, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies. The search terms 'Dignity Therapy' AND 'Cancer' were used to identify RCTs, quasi-experimental, mixed methods and qualitative studies related to DT implemented in adult cancer patients from Scopus and Web of Science da

The Opioid substitution treatment (OST) has been highly argumentative in ways that raise important ethical issues. The stigma in treating opioid addiction continues to be a major barrier to effective management plan. It prevents individuals from seeking treatment and is associated with poor mental and physical health. OST are considered to improve outcomes in opioid dependency. They are legitimate therapeutic options because they comply with the four principles of bioethics: autonomy, no maleficence, beneficence and justice. OST plan should conceived in a way that outcomes only giving a medica

INTRODUCTION: Dignity Therapy is an innovative intervention designed to alleviate emotional suffering and address the distress associated with loss of dignity in individuals with advanced illness or at the end of life. Its use has steadily increased, and previous systematic reviews have synthesized evidence on its effectiveness in palliative care. However, there is no comprehensive synthesis that explores aspects of this intervention beyond commonly reported clinical outcomes. The aim of this review was to identify and synthesize the available evidence on the use of Dignity Therapy in palliati

Dignity therapy is a brief, structured, narrative intervention aimed at alleviating the existential suffering of terminally ill patients and improving their quality of life. The method was developed by Harvey Max Chochinov and supports psychosocial dimensions such as role maintenance, generativity, self-identity, and hope. During its adaptation in Hungary, cultural, communicative, and legal characteristics were also taken into account. International research shows that dignity therapy has a positive effect on the sense of hope of dying people, reduces anxiety and depression, promotes inner pea

A routine threat to palliative care research is participants not completing studies. The purpose of this analysis was to quantify attrition rates mid-way through a palliative care study on Dignity Therapy and describe the reasons cited for attrition. Enrolled in the study were a total of 365 outpatients with cancer who were receiving outpatient specialty palliative care (mean age 66.7 ± 7.3 years, 56% female, 72% White, 22% Black, 6% other race/ethnicity). These participants completed an initial screening for cognitive status, performance status, physical distress, and spiritual distress. Ther

OBJECTIVES: Dignity is a crucial value in caring for nursing home residents. These residents are extremely vulnerable due to, among others, their physical, social, and mental health risks. These risk factors can undermine their sense of dignity and induce feelings of inferiority and even depression.Dignity Therapy is a short, individualized psychotherapy aimed at decreasing the existential distress of patients with a terminal illness. It appeared to be successful in patients with incurable cancer and could be a valuable addition to the treatment of loss of dignity in nursing homes. We evaluate

Objective: To systematically map and synthesize the existing literature on the use of Dignity Therapy (DT) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with particular attention to feasibility, acceptability, therapeutic outcomes, and clinical adaptations required for patients and caregivers. Methods: A systematic scoping review was conducted searching PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus for studies published in the last ten years examining DT in individuals with ALS. Eligible studies were charted and compared qualitatively due to heterogeneity in design, outcomes, and measurement tools. R

Twenty years have passed since Dignity Therapy was introduced as a brief psychotherapeutic intervention grounded in the Model of Dignity in the terminally ill. Designed to address threats to personhood by supporting generativity, meaning, and legacy, it invites patients to create enduring documents that reflect their values, identities, and life narratives. Although initially conceived for end-of-life care, Dignity Therapy has since been adapted for diverse populations, including children, individuals with non-malignant illness, those experiencing cognitive decline, people who are grieving; an

OBJECTIVES: Dignity Therapy (DT) helps reframe and give meaning to the illness process of the terminally ill individual. This study aims to evaluate the effect of DT on meaning in life scores and, additionally, to assess how much DT can alleviate physical and emotional symptoms in cancer patients undergoing palliative care.
METHODS: This was a before-and-after clinical trial, involving the recruitment of 30 patients hospitalized in a palliative care unit, who filled out the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and the Meaning in Life Scale (MiLS) both before and after the implementation o

BACKGROUND: Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are commonly implanted in older patients, including those with multiple comorbidities. There are few prospective studies assessing the clinical course and end-of-life circumstances for these patients.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively followed 51 patients with ICDs for up to 18 months to longitudinally assess in terms of (1) advance care planning, (2) health status, (3) healthcare utilization, and (4) end-of-life circumstances through quarterly phone interviews and electronic medical record review. The mean age was 71.1±8.3, 74.5%

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) patients experience disproportionately poor psychosocial cancer outcomes when compared to non-SGM patients. Psychosocial interventions specifically tailored to this population are lacking.
AIMS: To assess feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of a modified Dignity Therapy (DT) intervention for sexual and gender minority (SGM) patients with cancer.
METHODS: We modified DT to incorporate questions about sexual and gender identity and a novel poetic interpretation of the dignity narrative (DT-SGM). The intervention was evaluated in a pr
