Nutrient enrichment is associated with altered nectar and pollen chemical composition in Succisa pratensis Moench and increased larval mortality of its pollinator Bombus terrestris L.

Pollinators are declining worldwide and possible underlying causes include disease, invasive pest species and large scale land use changes resulting in habitat loss and degradation. One particular cause of habitat degradation is the increased inflow of nutrients due to anthropogenic combustion processes and large scale application of agricultural fertilizers. This nutrient pollution has been shown to affect pollinators through the loss of nectar and pollen-providing plant species. However, it may also affect pollinators through altering the nectar and pollen chemical composition of plant speci

Identification and catalytic mechanisms of key enzymes in the biosynthesis of asperosaponin VI from Dipsacusasperoides.

Asperosaponin Ⅵ is the major active compound in the traditional Chinese medcinal herb Dipsacus asperoides (Xu-Duan), exhibits diverse pharmacological activities, including treating osteoporosis, anti-inflammatory effects, and neuroprotective properties. However, due to limited natural sources and challenges in chemical extraction, heterologous biosynthesis offers a strategy for efficient production of asperosaponin Ⅵ and its intermediates and derivatives. Despite its potential, the biosynthetic pathway of asperosaponin Ⅵ remains poorly understood, primarily due to its complex multi-step reacti

The Anti-Acne Potential and Chemical Composition of Knautia drymeia Heuff. and Knautia macedonica Griseb Extracts.

The treatment of acne and other seborrheic diseases has arisen as a significant clinical challenge due to the increasing appearance of multi-drug resistant pathogens and a high frequency of recurrent lesions. Taking into consideration the fact that some Knautia species are valuable curatives in skin diseases in traditional medicine, we assumed that the thus far unstudied species K. drymeia and K. macedonica may be a source of active substances used in skin diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activities of their ex

New hybrid iridoid glycoside oligomers from Scabiosa comosa with anti-cholestasis potential.

Cholestatic liver disease (CLD) represents a significant clinical challenge due to the lack of effective drugs. Our preliminary data suggested that the inflorescences of Scabiosa comosa, a traditional Mongolian medicine clinically used against jaundice, were abundant in iridoids. However, the chemical features of iridoids present in S. comosa and their anti-cholestasis potential remain unclear. In the current study, total iridoid glycosides (TIG) were prepared from the n-BuOH extract of S. comosa inflorescences. Anti-cholestasis effects of TIG were confirmed with ANIT-induced liver injury mice

Asperosaponin VI promotes progesterone receptor expression in decidual cells via the notch signaling pathway.

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is a common clinical condition, but its reasons remain unknown in 37-79% of the affected women. The steroid hormone progesterone (P4) is an integral mediator of early pregnancy events, exerting its effects via the progesterone receptor (PR). Dipsaci Radix (DR) has long been used for treating gynecological diseases in Chinese medicine, while its molecular mechanisms and active ingredients are still unclear. We report here the progesterone-like effects of the alcohol extraction and Asperosaponin VI from DR in primary decidual cells and HeLa cell line. We firs
