There is limited information of the outcomes of direct-to-consumer testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. The Screen Project was initiated in 2017 to offer BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic screening to all Canadians over the age of 18 who wish to know their mutation status. Patients enrolled in the study from 2017 to 2019 and were followed for one year after the receipt of a genetic test result. Study subjects registered online and were sent a saliva sample kit, which was shipped to the reference laboratory. Pre-test genetic counselling and counselling for mutation-negative subjects was optional and at

OBJECTIVE: This guideline was written to update Canadian maternity care and reproductive healthcare providers on pre- and postconceptional reproductive carrier screening for women or couples who may be at risk of being carriers for autosomal recessive (AR), autosomal dominant (AD), or X-linked (XL) conditions, with risk of transmission to the fetus. Four previous SOGC- Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (CCMG) guidelines are updated and merged into the current document.
INTENDED USERS: All maternity care (most responsible health provider [MRHP]) and paediatric providers; maternity nursin

Direct to consumer genetic testing (DTC-GT) has expanded exponentially in the past decade, but little is known about Genetic Health Practitioners' (GHPs') experience with, attitudes towards, and capacity to support DTC-GT consumers. This scoping review aimed to consolidate empirical research to understand GHP and consumer needs and identify knowledge gaps. Forty-four publications from 2007 to 2025 covering GHP attitudes towards DTC-GT and GHP/consumer experiences of counselling (n = 30); company provision of counselling (n = 12); and counsellor-designed tools for DTC-GT consumers (n = 2) were

The availability of direct-to-consumer genetic testing (DTCGT) for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) provides the public with access to disease risk estimations that may be used to guide lifestyle adjustments. However, AMD development risk is more complex than can be captured by gene mutations alone. The methodologies employed by current DTCGTs to estimate AMD risk vary and are limited in several ways. Genotyping-based DTCGT is biased toward European ancestry and only considers a limited number of genes. Whole genome sequencing based DTCGTs uncovers several genetic variations with unknown

The availability and increasing popularity of direct-to-consumer genetic testing for the presence of an APOE4 allelle led the Alzheimer's Foundation of America Medical, Scientific and Memory Screening Advisory Board to identify three critical areas for attention: 1) ensure consumer understanding of test results; 2) address and limit potential negative consequences of acquiring this information; and 3) support linking results with positive health behaviors, including potential clinical trial participation. Improving access to appropriate sources of genetic counseling as part of the testing proc

Over-the-counter (OTC) and direct-to-consumer (DTC) tests have been gaining popularity due to their potential to provide accurate and quick diagnostic results without any test order from healthcare professionals, while providing patients the opportunity to actively engage in their own health management. Group A streptococcus is a common transmissible pathogen that leads to acute pharyngitis. Accurate and timely diagnosis of Group A streptococcus pharyngitis is critical to urge patients to seek professional healthcare, to support antibiotic stewardship, to reduce disease transmission, and to pr

Increasingly, consumers have been able to seek DNA testing online to explore their personal genetic information. This increased access to a range of genomic tests has raised concerns among health professionals tasked with providing guidance and support to patients requiring genetic/genomic testing. Individuals will seek genomic testing for a range of purposes; equally, the medical marketplace offers a range of different test types. The Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) published their first statement on Direct to Consumer Genetic Testing (2012 PS02). This is a revised statement, whi

As the use and scope of direct-to-consumer genetic testing (DTC GT), also becoming known as consumer-driven genetic testing, increases, consumers may seek genetic counseling to understand their results and determine healthcare implications. In this study, we interviewed individuals who sought genetic counseling after receiving DTC GT results to explore their motivations, expectations, and experiences. Participants were recruited from the Impact of Personal Genomics (PGen) Study, a longitudinal cohort study of DTC GT customers. We interviewed 15 participants (9 females, mean age = 38 years) by

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Male fertility evaluation is increasingly shifting outside traditional clinics as direct-to-consumer (DTC) semen testing and cryopreservation services expand. This review synthesizes current evidence on the accuracy, clinical utility, and cost implications of DTC products and evaluates their role alongside guideline-based care. RECENT FINDINGS: Smartphone-based platforms and other DTC products show strong performance for screening sperm concentration and motility, and mail-in cryopreservation allows access to laboratory analysis from home. However, most DTC tests do not repl

Genome-wide screening can be offered at various stages of life and serve multiple purposes, including early detection of treatable conditions, achieving health benefits, or enhancing reproductive choices. Although genome-wide screening offers many new possibilities, determining which genomic data to analyse, how to interpret results, and how to communicate findings, presents significant challenges. In our research, we explored considerations for responsible genome-wide screening by combining a normative analysis of three different settings (population screening, opportunistic screening, and di

Insights into the perspectives, decision-making and experiences of non-US consumers regarding health-related direct-to-consumer genetic testing (DTC-GT) are currently lacking. These insights are essential to allow the implementation of consumer-tailored approaches that facilitate responsible use of DTC-GT. To fill this knowledge gap, the present study employed interviews to examine the consumer journeys of twenty Dutch health-related DTC-GT consumers. Overall, participants appeared quite satisfied with their DTC-GT consumer journeys. Participants' initial contacts with DTC-GT, as well as their

OBJECTIVES: While direct-to-consumer genetic tests are widely used in veterinary medicine, claims regarding communication and counselling issues have not been investigated so far. Our aim was to evaluate the communication channels encountered by clients when direct-to-consumer genetic tests are ordered, as well as access to genetic counselling to investigate whether these concerns are justified.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Checklists, email inquiries and direct-to-consumer genetic test kits were used to survey access to pre- and post-test counselling, as well as adherence to quality standards and

BACKGROUND: Millions of people have taken Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) DNA ancestry tests to learn more about their ethnic ancestry and family history. A small but growing body of research has noted that these DTC DNA ancestry tests raise challenging ethical, psychosocial, and resource-related issues that have not been adequately considered nor discussed. One key issue concerns a "Not Parent Expected" (NPE) discovery, in which a user suddenly and unexpectedly learns from these tests that an assumed parent (typically the father) is not a biological parent. Such news can negatively affect mental hea

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is at an all-time high. Direct-to-consumer STI testing services may help alleviate this undue health burden. These products are sold online and rarely require interaction with a health care professional (HCP). Vendors offer STI self-collection kits or prescriptions for HCP specimen collection. The objective was to understand the scope of direct-to-consumer STI testing services offered and provide recommendations for consumers and industry.
METHODS: Seven volunteers searched for "STD tests" on Google from February 1 through M

This position statement provides guidelines for health professionals who are considering online or direct-to-consumer genetic testing for their patients. It presents the major issues around online and direct-to-consumer (DTC) testing including how it is accessed, motivations for accessing testing and how to return these results. Online or DTC recommendations include: (1) DTC testing should only be done by individuals/consumers who are well informed, aware of the risks, benefits and limitations of testing, and able to consent for their DNA to be collected, analyzed and potentially stored. Where

Emerging digital tools have the potential to enable a new generation of qualitative and quantitative assessment of cognitive performance. Moreover, the ubiquity of consumer electronics, such as smartphones and tablets, can be harnessed to support large-scale self-assessed cognitive screening with benefit to healthcare systems and consumers. A wide variety of apps, wearables, and new digital technologies are either available or in development for the detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a risk factor for dementia. Two categories of novel methodologies may be considered: passive technol

Despite insufficient evidence to support direct-to-consumer genetic testing in routine clinical care, cardiovascular clinicians increasingly face questions about its utility and interpretation because individuals can purchase these tests directly from laboratories. A burgeoning marketplace offers an expanding array of testing options. In many cases, direct-to-consumer genetic testing advertises information that could inform one's risk of heritable disease, including insight into having a genetic predisposition to cardiovascular disease or data about gene-drug interactions that could affect res

The general consensus among sport and exercise genetics researchers is that genetic tests have no role to play in talent identification or the individualised prescription of training to maximise performance. Despite the lack of evidence, recent years have witnessed the rise of an emerging market of direct-to-consumer marketing (DTC) tests that claim to be able to identify children's athletic talents. Targeted consumers include mainly coaches and parents. There is concern among the scientific community that the current level of knowledge is being misrepresented for commercial purposes. There re
