Disasters in Disrupted Communities: The Role of Nurses in Promoting Disaster Readiness.

As natural hazards increase and intensify, nurses can support patient, family, and community well-being by promoting disaster readiness. Brief, tailored, and timely patient education during minor and routine visits is one avenue to do so. A more prepared community can decrease illness and injury, lessen health care system burden, and increase resilience to disasters. This article provides accessible disaster readiness messages that nurses can model and utilize in health care interactions. The all-hazards approach and common hazards preparedness are addressed. Several case studies are presented

[Disaster nursing: one nurse's role and experience during the Fukushima Power Plant disaster following the Great East Japan Earthquake].

The Richter-scale 9.0 earthquake that struck Northeast Japan on March 11th, 2011 caused a tsunami that damaged the Fukushima No. 1 Power Plant and released enormous amounts of radiation into the environment. Many area residents were evacuated to several protected fallout shelters. Prior to the tsunami, Fukashima had around 505,760 residents over 65 years of age, comprising 24.9% of the city's pre-tsunami population of Fukushima (City of Fukushima, 2011). The high proportion of elderly contributed to difficulties encountered in evacuating and caring for Fukushima citizens in the immediate after

Evaluating Differences in Disaster-Related Staffing for Nursing Homes by Ownership Status.

For-profit ownership has been linked to lower levels and skill composition of nursing home staffing, yet it is unclear whether disasters exacerbate these differences. We identified 914 nursing homes in Hurricane Ian's path (September 2022), of which 665 (72.8%) were for-profit. We applied a comparative interrupted time series design to compare staffing hours per resident per day (HPRPD) before and after landfall. Before the storm, for-profit facilities staffed 9% fewer total HPRPD than not-for-profits (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.87-0.95), with similar deficits in the employed (permanent st

Planning for biological disasters. Occupational health nurses as "first responders".

1. As a result of recent terrorist events, there is an immediate need for occupational nurses to review their disaster plans and to develop strategies to cope with bioterrorism in their workplaces. 2. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified three major categories of biological weapons. Category A, which is the highest priority category (and the focus of this article), includes smallpox, anthrax, botulism, plague, tularemia, filoviruses, and adenoviruses. Dealing with bioterrorism requires occupational health nurses to be familiar with these organisms, including their path

Beyond Bedside Care: Reframing Disaster Nursing Education as a Health System Resilience Strategy.

The increasing frequency and complexity of disasters are placing unprecedented demands on health systems and the nursing workforce. Despite nurses playing a central role in disaster preparedness and response, disaster-related competencies remain inconsistently integrated into nursing education. This gap should be viewed not merely as an educational issue, but as a matter of health system resilience. Future disaster-ready nurses require competencies extending beyond clinical care, including leadership, systems thinking, ethical decision-making, and interprofessional collaboration. Competency-ba

Comparing Disaster-Related Surge Staffing Practices Across Rural and Non-Rural Nursing Homes.

BACKGROUND: Clarifying whether rural and non-rural nursing homes implement different disaster-related staffing approaches is vital to developing targeted preparedness strategies. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study of 361 nursing homes exposed to Hurricane Michael (2018), we used a comparative interrupted time series design to assess changes in staffing intensity and composition from 30 days before landfall to 7 days after. We examined three outcomes using the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Payroll Based Journal: total staffing intensity (hours per resident per day), l

Disaster preparedness among nurses caring for older adults: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are disproportionately affected during disasters because of multimorbidity, frailty, functional dependency, and reliance on continuous healthcare and social support services. Nurses play a central role in maintaining safety, continuity of care, communication, and clinical coordination during emergencies. However, disaster preparedness in geriatric care settings remains inconsistently developed and has often been examined through a narrow pandemic-related infection prevention and control lens rather than through comprehensive disaster nursing competency frameworks.
