Discriminant analysis.

Discriminant analysis (DA) is a family of statistical methods in which the primary purpose is to predict into which of several discrete groups (eg, diagnostic categories) an individual subject should be classed. This might be called the classification or forecasting function. A second use of DA examines how well the derived discrimination equation fits the data from which it is derived. This is called the evaluation function of the analysis. Examples of familiar clinical situations show how DA might be relevant to health care decisions, especially classification decisions.

Minorization-Maximization for Ratio Sum Linear Discriminant Analysis.

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a widely used supervised dimension reduction method. Recently, an important variant of LDA called ratio sum LDA (RSLDA) has been proposed. RSLDA is notable for its unique ability to maximize the discriminative power of each feature in the subspace. To solve the RSLDA optimization problem, the existing equivalent transformation method converts the original problem into an equivalent one composed of two subproblems, with an auxiliary parameter introduced to ensure their convexity. In this way, the solution can be obtained via a double-loop (DL) algorithm. Ho

Discriminant analysis in predicting prognosis of Bell's palsy.

A prospective study was carried out to objectively quantificate the most important predictive factors in idiopathic facial paralysis (Bell's palsy). Stepwise discriminant analysis was applied to data prospectively obtained from 570 patients with Bell's palsy treated at the ENT Department of La Paz Hospital between January 1983 and January 1986. Due to statistical requirements the final number of patients included for discriminant analysis was 140. In all, 37 variables were studied in each patient. With data obtained from these variables a linear discriminant function was obtained, with an over

Neuropsychological assessment of learning disabilities: a discriminant analysis.

The neuropsychological test scores of 23 learning disabled children were compared with those of a matched population of normal children in the 9-1 to 13-1 age range. All children were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), a dichotic listening task involving both free and directed recall conditions, a handedness inventory, the Tactile Performance Test and the Category Test from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery. A multivariate analysis of variance resulted in a significant separation between groups (p less than .001) using these procedures

Discriminant analysis in the differential diagnosis of hypercalcaemia.

Linear discriminant analysis, a multivariate statistical procedure, applied to serum calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, bicarbonate, chloride, creatinine and tubular reabsorption of phosphate, proved to be effective in distinguishing patients with Primary Hyperparathyroidism from other hypercalcaemic patients in eithy-four retrospective cases. The application of the model to thirty-four prospective cases enabled us to separate correctly, hyperparathyroid patients from non-parathyroid hypercalcaemic patients.

Transformation Discriminant Analysis for Constructing Optimal Biomarker Combinations.

Accurate diagnostic tests are essential for effective screening and treatment. However, individual biomarkers often fail to provide sufficient diagnostic accuracy, as they typically capture only one aspect of the complex disease process. Combining multiple biomarkers, each capturing a distinct mechanism, can help construct more informative diagnostic tests. In practice, logistic regression is used as the default to combine biomarkers, but it can perform poorly when biomarker distributions exhibit skewness or differ across disease groups. Nonparametric methods provide more flexibility but gener

[Discriminant analysis of the mandible for sex determination].

Seventeen measuring parameters were used to characterize 197 mandibles (109 males, 88 females) taken from the corpses of people 20-80 years of age from the Rhine-Main-Neckar area. The representative measuring parameters and discriminating functions of intact lower jaws and lower jaw fragments of most frequent fracture types were determined in this practice group by means of discriminating analysis. In the present research material it was possible to determine sex accurately from an intact lower jaw bone in 82.6% (m) and 79.5% (f) of the cases. Furthermore, our results show clearly that sex may

Transfer Learning via Regularized Random-effects Linear Discriminant Analysis.

Linear discriminant analysis is a widely used method for classification. However, the high dimensionality of predictors combined with small sample sizes often results in large classification errors. To address this challenge, it is crucial to leverage data from related source models to enhance the classification performance of a target model. This paper proposes a transfer learning approach via regularized random-effects linear discriminant analysis, where the discriminant direction is estimated as a weighted combination of ridge estimates obtained from both the target and source models. Discriminant analysis of functional optical topography for schizophrenia diagnosis.

Abnormal prefrontal function plays a central role in the cognition deficits of schizophrenic patients; however, the character of the relationship between discriminant analysis and prefrontal activation remains undetermined. Recently, evidence of low prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation in individuals with schizophrenia has also been found during verbal fluency tests (VFT) and other cognitive tests with several neuroimaging methods. The purpose of this study is to assess the hemodynamic changes of the PFC and discriminant analysis between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls during VFT tas

Discriminant analysis of the Ullrich-Turner syndrome neurocognitive profile.

Ullrich-Turner syndrome (UTS), or monosomy X, is a genetic disorder characterized by short stature, gonadal dysgenesis, and a particular neurocognitive profile of normally developed language abilities (particularly verbal IQ) and impaired visual-spatial and/or visual-perceptual abilities. The most frequently described profile in UTS includes difficulty with tasks involving memory and attention, decreased arithmetic skills, and impaired visual spatial processing. We used discriminant function analysis (DFA) to distinguish between the neurocognitive profiles of girls with UTS vs. controls matche

Joint optimization transposed projection envelope linear discriminant analysis mode.

Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is a widely employed feature-extraction technique that, guided by Fisher discriminant criterion, projects original high-dimensional samples into a lower-dimensional subspace with enhanced separability. Its interpretability and ease of application are advantageous. However, conventional LDA is constructed at the granularity of the original samples and fails to incorporate correlation information among similar samples, thereby limiting performance. To address this limitation, the present work proposes Transposed Projection Envelope Linear Discriminant Analysis

Repeated measures discriminant analysis using multivariate generalized estimation equations.

Discriminant analysis procedures that assume parsimonious covariance and/or means structures have been proposed for distinguishing between two or more populations in multivariate repeated measures designs. However, these procedures rely on the assumptions of multivariate normality which is not tenable in multivariate repeated measures designs which are characterized by binary, ordinal, or mixed types of response distributions. This study investigates the accuracy of repeated measures discriminant analysis (RMDA) based on the multivariate generalized estimating equations (GEE) framework for cla

Discriminant analysis of prion sequences for prediction of susceptibility.

Prion diseases, including ovine scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), human kuru and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), originate from a conformational change of the normal cellular prion protein (PrP(C)) into abnormal protease-resistant prion protein (PrP(Sc)). There is concern regarding these prion diseases because of the possibility of their zoonotic infections across species. Mutations and polymorphisms of prion sequences may influence prion-disease susceptibility through the modified expression and conformation of proteins. Rapid determination of susceptibility based on prion-seq

Discriminant analysis for the diagnosis of childhood celiac disease.

A new statistical approach to the analysis of laboratory data has been introduced to optimize the use of absorption tests and gliadin antibody measurement for the diagnosis of childhood celiac disease. Serum antigliadin antibodies, as well as blood xylose, iron, and tryglycerides after oral load, were evaluated in 40 celiac children and 43 age-matched patients affected by other gastrointestinal diseases. Each test evaluated individually gave a considerable rate of false-positive and false-negative results. Discriminant coefficients produced for each test were used to compute a score that allow

Factors associated with pulmonary infarction. A discriminant analysis study.

To determine the relative importance of multiple interrelated factors that have been considered to contribute to pulmonary infarction, the authors performed a discriminant analysis on consecutively autopsied patients with pulmonary embolism. From the clinic records of 45 individuals, the authors tabulated the underlying illness, history of valvular or ischemic heart disease, right and left ventricular failure, sepsis, shock, malignancy, premortem functional status, and the clinician's suspicion of pulmonary embolism. At postmortem examination, the authors measured and recorded the extent of em

Prognosis and diagnosis of Reye syndrome by discriminant analysis.

Discriminant analysis was used to discriminate between Reye syndrome (RS) patients and non-RS cases based either on conventional blood chemistry data obtained upon admission, or on the activities of hepatic mitochondrial enzymes in biopsy or necropsy tissue. The control group for blood chemistry measurements contained children with upper respiratory tract infections, varicella, etc. who did not develop RS, as well as healthy children. Subjects with no liver disorder (e.g., accidental death, sudden infant death, etc.) or with non-RS liver disorders were used as controls for hepatic enzyme studi
