Discrimination Exposure, Neural Reactivity to Stress, and Psychological Distress.

OBJECTIVE: Discrimination exposure has a detrimental impact on mental health, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. The impact discrimination exposure has on mental health is likely mediated by neural processes associated with emotion expression and regulation. However, the specific neural processes that mediate the relationship between discrimination exposure and mental health remain to be determined. The present study investigated the relationship adolescent discrimination exposure has with stress-elicited brain activity and mental health symptoms in young adu

Psychological pathways from daily discrimination to pain: a longitudinal mediation model.

Perceived discrimination, self-esteem, and self-acceptance have each been linked to pain outcomes, yet few studies have examined these factors together or investigated the psychological pathways connecting them. Grounded in the Biopsychosocial framework, this study explored the longitudinal mediating roles of self-esteem and self-acceptance in the relationship between perceived daily discrimination and pain interference. Archival data were drawn from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study, with MIDUS II (2004-2006) as Time 1 and MIDUS III (2013-2014) as Time 2. The sample included 501

Childhood trauma and everyday discrimination: Associations with psychological and physiological health.

Childhood trauma and discrimination are two experiences that are of particular importance in the development of psychological and physiological problems. The current study aims to 1) identify patterns of childhood trauma and everyday discrimination and 2) explore predictors of class membership and how classes relate to alcohol use, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), insomnia, and pain. Data for the present study come from the 24-month follow-up (N = 937) of a longitudinal study of veteran behavioral health. Latent class analysis extracted classes of childhood trauma and discrimination, and

Psychological processes underlying the impact of gender-related discrimination on psychological distress in transgender and gender nonconforming people.

In this study we combined understanding from the gender minority stress and resilience (GMSR) model (Testa, Habarth, Peta, Balsam, & Bockting, 2015) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT; Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 1999, 2012) to test a theoretically integrated and expansive account of the development of psychological distress in transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people. Specifically, we constructed a parallel multiple mediation model in which we examined the role of psychological processes deriving from the GMSR model (i.e., internalized transphobia and identity nondisclosure)

COVID-19-related discrimination, PTSD symptoms, and psychological distress in healthcare workers.

To date, little effort has been made to examine if frontline workers who deal with COVID-19 patients are more likely to experience discrimination than second-line workers. Also, little information has appeared on how COVID-19-related discrimination affects PTSD symptoms in healthcare workers. We aimed to examine the association between COVID-19-related discrimination and frontline worker status. We further aimed to examine how COVID-19-related discrimination was associated with PTSD symptoms and psychological distress. We studied 647 healthcare workers. For the association between COVID-19-rel

Discrimination of organic versus psychological impotence with the DSFI: a failure to replicate.

Patients with a presenting complaint of erectile dysfunction were extensively investigated by a research team consisting of a urologist, vascular surgeon, psychiatrist and psychiatric social worker. Patients were assigned to organic and psychogenic groups according to specified criteria. Multiple comparisons of psychogenic and organic impotence cases on scores derived from the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory (DSFI) did not differentiate the two groups. This inventory did, however, manifest numerous relationships with demographic variables. Failure to identify a psychological profile cha

Discrimination, psychological functioning, and substance use among U.S. young adults aged 18-28, 2017.

This study aimed to test whether (a) discrimination is associated with past 30-day/current alcohol, cigarette, e-cigarette, alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drug use among Black and White U.S. adults aged 18-28, (b) psychological distress (PD) and positive well-being (PW) are mediators of the discrimination-substance use relationships, and (c) the associations are moderated by race and sex. Using data from a 2017 U.S. nationally representative survey we conducted multiple-group moderated mediation analyses among 2,192 young adults aged 18-28 (508 Black males, 594 Black females, 533 White

Craniofacial Laterality Discrimination and Psychological Factors in Women with Fibromyalgia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a multidimensional chronic pain condition associated with alterations in sensorimotor processing, body perception, and psychological functioning. Although laterality discrimination impairments have been described for the limbs, evidence regarding craniofacial regions remains limited. This study compared mandibular and lingual laterality discrimination, body esteem, state anxiety, and kinesiophobia between women with FM and healthy controls and examined their associations with clinical variables. Methods: A cross-sectional study included 60 women, 30 with FM and

Trauma, Discrimination, and Psychological Distress Across Vietnamese Refugees and Immigrants: A Life Course Perspective.

Vietnamese Americans are a heterogeneous group with varied migration histories. The life course perspective (LCP) suggests that different migration histories (immigrant vs. refugee) may affect their psychological health. Using Vietnamese refugee (n = 291) and immigrant (n = 211) subsamples from the National Latino and Asian American Study, selected LCP factors relevant to foreign-born Vietnamese were examined for their associations with psychological distress. Two separate regressions were conducted to examine differential factors across the subgroups. Results showed that sex, age at immigrati

Social capital, anticipated ethnic discrimination and self-reported psychological health: a population-based study.

This study investigates the association between anticipated ethnic discrimination and self-reported psychological health, taking generalized trust in other people into consideration. The 2004 Public Health Survey in Skåne, Sweden, is a cross-sectional postal questionnaire study including a total of 27,757 respondents aged 18-80 with a 59% response rate. Multivariate analyses of anticipated discrimination and self-reported psychological health were performed using logistic regressions in order to investigate the importance of possible confounders (age, country of origin, education and horizonta

Dogs can discriminate between human baseline and psychological stress condition odours.

Previous research suggests that dogs can detect when humans are experiencing stress. This study tested whether baseline and stress odours were distinguishable to dogs, using a double-blind, two-phase, three-alternative forced-choice procedure. Combined breath and sweat samples were obtained from participants at baseline, and after a stress-inducing (mental arithmetic) task. Participants' stress was validated with self-report and physiological measures recorded via a Biopac MP150 system. Thirty-six participants' samples were presented to four dogs across 36 sessions (16, 11, 7 and 2 sessions, r

Psychological characteristics of infertile patients: discriminating etiological factors from reactive changes.

Our objective was to discriminate psychological factors playing an etiological role in infertility and psychological problems as consequences of infertility. The design was a prospective study of couples with initially Undetermined Fertility (UF couples) and couples with initially Known Infertility (KI couples). After a 13-month follow-up, three groups could be defined: fertile UF couples; infertile UF couples; and KI couples. Hypotheses were the following. If a psychological factor played an etiological role, measures in fertile UF couples should be different from measures in infertile UF cou

Do trait psychological characteristics moderate sympathetic arousal to racial discrimination exposure in a natural setting?

Personality and psychological traits are known to influence how individuals react to and cope with stress, and thus, have downstream health and aging consequences. However, research considering psychological health traits as individual-level difference factors moderating the links been racism-related stress and health for racial and ethnic minorities in the United States is rare. Using intensive daily diaries and a wearable sensor that continuously recorded sympathetic nervous system arousal in a sample of racial and ethnic minority college students (80% African American, first-generation Blac

Stigma kills! The psychological effects of emotional abuse and discrimination towards a patient with HIV in Uganda.

Our patient is a 58-year-old Ugandan woman. After her husband's death in 1994, the patient was forced to leave her home by her late husband's family and arrangements were made for her mother to provide care until her inevitable death. The patient suffered from multiple mental health disturbances as a result of discrimination. Socially isolated after years of self-neglect, she prepared to overdose. In 2007, she became open regarding her status after receiving psychosocial support from various sources. She opened her home as an HIV clinic with the help of a local doctor, and subsequently the maj

Violence, Discrimination, Psychological Distress, and HIV Vulnerability Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in Memphis, Tennessee.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionally impacted by HIV. Discrimination, violence, and psychological distress (PD) may influence engagement with HIV prevention services and amplify HIV vulnerability among this priority population. These dynamics are understudied in the Southern United States. Understanding how these relationships interact is critical to designing effective HIV programs. We examined associations between MSM-related discrimination, MSM-related violence, and severe PD with HIV status among 2017 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance study part

Psychological Well-Being and Substance Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Ethnic/Racial Identity, Discrimination, and Vigilance.

OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated mental health disparities among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) through increased exposure to racism. Although ethnic/racial identity (ERI) and mental health were associated among BIPOC young adults pre-pandemic, it is unclear how these associations may differ in the exacerbated hostile racial environment of the pandemic. The current study examined the associations between ERI exploration and commitment within the context of ethnic/racial discrimination (ERD) and race-related vigilance with psycho
