Cholera: Environmental Reservoirs and Impact on Disease Transmission.

Vibrio cholerae is widely known to be the etiological agent of the life-threatening diarrheal disease cholera. Cholera remains a major scourge in many developing countries, infecting hundreds of thousands every year. Remarkably, V. cholerae is a natural inhabitant of brackish riverine, estuarine, and coastal waters, and only a subset of strains are known to be pathogenic to humans. Recent studies have begun to uncover a very complex network of relationships between V. cholerae and other sea dwellers, and the mechanisms associated with the occurrence of seasonal epidemics in regions where chole

[Small rodents in the forest ecosystem as infectious disease reservoirs].

Due to numerousness of populations and width of ecologic valence, small rodents are important parts of almost any forest ecosystem. The represent an important animal group, which connects primary makers with higher trophic levels. They transmit various infectious diseases dangerous for the health of people and domestic and wild animals (trichinosis, leptospirosis, tick encephalitis, Lyme disease, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, etc.). The following species of small rodents live in forest ecosystems of Croatia: Chletrionomys glareolus Schreib., Arvicola terrestris L, M. subterraneus de S

Ecologic niche modeling and potential reservoirs for Chagas disease, Mexico.

Ecologic niche modeling may improve our understanding of epidemiologically relevant vector and parasite-reservoir distributions. We used this tool to identify host relationships of Triatoma species implicated in transmission of Chagas disease. Associations have been documented between the protracta complex (Triatoma: Triatominae: Reduviidae) with packrat species (Neotoma spp.), providing an excellent case study for the broader challenge of developing hypotheses of association. Species pairs that were identified coincided exactly with those in previous studies, suggesting that local interaction

[Ixodes ricinus, transmitted diseases and reservoirs].

The tick Ixodes ricinus has been recorded in most Italian regions especially in thermo-mesophilous woods and shrubby habitats where the relative humidity allow the tick to complete its 3 year developmental cycle, as predicted for the European climatic ranges. This tick acts both as vector and reservoir for a series of wildlife zoonotic pathogens, especially the agents of Lyme diseases, Tick borne encephalitis and Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis, which are emerging in most of Europe. To assess the spatial distribution of these pathogens and the infection risk for humans and animals within the t

Bioluminescence Imaging with Functional Amyloid Reservoirs in Alzheimer's Disease Models.

Bioluminescence imaging has changed the daily practice of preclinical research on cancer and other diseases over the last few decades; however, it has rarely been applied in preclinical research on Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this Article, we demonstrated that bioluminescence imaging could be used to report the levels of amyloid beta (Aβ) species in vivo. We hypothesized that AkaLumine, a newly discovered substrate for luciferase, could bind to Aβ aggregates and plaques. We further speculated that the Aβ aggregates/fibrils/plaques could be considered as "functional amyloids", which have a res

Rodent reservoirs of future zoonotic diseases.

The increasing frequency of zoonotic disease events underscores a need to develop forecasting tools toward a more preemptive approach to outbreak investigation. We apply machine learning to data describing the traits and zoonotic pathogen diversity of the most speciose group of mammals, the rodents, which also comprise a disproportionate number of zoonotic disease reservoirs. Our models predict reservoir status in this group with over 90% accuracy, identifying species with high probabilities of harboring undiscovered zoonotic pathogens based on trait profiles that may serve as rules of thumb t

Competence of dogs as reservoirs for Lyme disease spirochetes (Borrelia burgdorferi).

Dogs become infected with Borrelia burgdorferi after being bitten by infected adult ticks. However, it is not known whether dogs are competent reservoirs of the organism, that is, it is not known whether infected dogs can subsequently transmit the bacterium to feeding immature ticks. To determine reservoir competence of dogs, 11 Beagles were experimentally infected by means of challenge exposure to infected adult deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis). Three weeks later, larval ticks were allowed to feed on the dogs. Engorged larvae were collected, allowed to molt to the nymph stage, and tested, by me

Wild animals as reservoirs of infectious diseases in the UK.

This review aims to illustrate the extent to which wildlife act as reservoirs of infectious agents that cause disease in domestic stock, pet and captive animals and humans. More than 40 agents are described. In the case of some of these, e.g. Cryptosporidium spp., Escherichia coli O157 and malignant catarrhal fever, the current evidence is that wildlife either does not act as a reservoir or is of limited importance. However, in the case of many important diseases, including bovine tuberculosis, Weil's disease, Lyme disease, avian influenza, duck virus enteritis and louping ill, wild animals ar

Urine as an antigen reservoir for diagnosis of infectious diseases.

Soluble or particulate microbial antigens are excreted in the urine in many systemic infectious processes. The ease with which urine antigens can be concentrated has facilitated their detection by immunologic methods. The group and type-specific bacterial polysaccharides are among the best studied examples of urinary excretion of microbial antigens. These polysaccharides are often present in the urine as low molecular weight fragments (70,000 daltons or less) and in some instances may represent degradation products of the native polysaccharides. Urine polysaccharides are sufficiently immunorea

Bats as reservoirs of severe emerging infectious diseases.

In recent years severe infectious diseases have been constantly emerging, causing panic in the world. Now we know that many of these terrible diseases are caused by viruses originated from bats (Table 1), such as Ebola virus, Marburg, SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV), MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV), Nipah virus (NiV) and Hendra virus (HeV). These viruses have co-evolved with bats due to bats' special social, biological and immunological features. Although bats are not in close contact with humans, spillover of viruses from bats to intermediate animal hosts, such as horses, pigs, civets, or non-human p

Escherichia coli O157:H7 in Ecuador: animal reservoirs, yet no human disease.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is frequently isolated from cases of diarrhea in many industrialized countries; however, it is seldom found in developing countries. The present manuscript reports the presence of E. coli O157:H7 in Ecuadorian livestock, a country where enterohemorrhagic E. coli disease in humans has never been reported. The Ecuadorian isolates were genetically related to some strains linked to clinical cases in the United States as assessed by multiple-locus variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis.

The capacity of dogs to serve as reservoirs for gastrointestinal disease in children.

A total of 40 Canine faecal specimens were collected from 10 different halting sites in the Dublin area. Specimens were taken from the site surface. The sites were determined by laboratory confirmed gastroenteritis infections reported in children. Each stool specimen was primarily examined for Giardia and Cryptosporidium but was also analysed for the presence of bacterial enteropathogens. The occurrence of canine zoonoses was not established, however the 40% prevalence of Giardia coupled with the 30% prevalence of bacterial enteropathogens on these sites support the supposition that dogs are a

Additional faecal reservoirs or hidden constipation: a link between functional and organic bowel disease.

INTRODUCTION: The study was undertaken to test a hypothesis of coexistence and causality between abdominal and recto-anal symptoms and physical signs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A random sample of 251 patients was drawn from 645 referred patients from 12th September 1988 to 19th January 1999. Nineteen selected symptoms were recorded; abdominal palpation and ano-rectoscopy were with special reference to identify faecal reservoirs. Barium enema was used to demonstrate colon pathology. After a combined prokinetic regimen, symptoms and signs were reassessed. The study was observational and factor anal

A review of mechanistic models of viral dynamics in bat reservoirs for zoonotic disease.

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2, a coronavirus with suspected bat origins, highlights a critical need for heightened understanding of the mechanisms by which bats maintain potentially zoonotic viruses at the population level and transmit these pathogens across species. We review mechanistic models, which test hypotheses of the transmission dynamics that underpin viral maintenance in bat systems. A search of the literature identified only twenty-five mechanistic models of bat-virus systems published to date, derived from twenty-three original studies. Most models focused on rabies and related lyssa

Short-tailed shrews as reservoirs of the agents of Lyme disease and human babesiosis.

To determine whether short-tailed shrews (Blarina brevicauda) serve as reservoir hosts for the Lyme disease spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi) and the agent of human babesiosis (Babesia microti), we examined nymphal ticks that had fed as larvae on shrews collected from 3 enzootic sites in coastal Massachusetts for evidence of infection by either or both of these agents. Xenodiagnosis indicated that 11 of 14 shrews were infected by B. burgdorferi. One of 3 piroplasm-infected shrews also infected ticks with B. microti. In a site where the piroplasm is endemic, 11 of 17 shrews showed patent parasi
