ABSTRACTAlthough interest on older homelessness is gaining momentum, little research has considered the experiences of first-time homelessness from the perspective of older adults themselves. This constructivist grounded-theory study addresses this gap by exploring how societal perceptions of homelessness and aging shape access to housing, services, and perceptions of self for 15 older adults residing in emergency homeless shelters in Montreal, (Quebec, Canada). Findings revealed that homelessness evoked a grief response characterized by shock, despair, anger, and in some cases, relief. Connec

Patient death may constitute an emotionally significant but often unrecognized source of occupational grief among healthcare professionals. This study examined disenfranchised grief after patient death and tested whether maladaptive coping strategies mediated its association with psychological well-being. In this cross-sectional pilot survey, 56 healthcare professionals with direct patient contact and professional experience with patient death completed an anonymous online questionnaire assessing disenfranchised grief after patient death, maladaptive coping strategies, and psychological well-b

BACKGROUND: Renal transplant failure has a devastating impact on patients and their families. However, little research has been conducted in this area, which limits insight and understanding of the transplant failure experience that could subsequently inform clinical practice.
OBJECTIVES: To explore participants' experiences of renal transplant failure in the first year post-graft failure.
DESIGN: A qualitative, longitudinal study informed by Heideggerian hermeneutics.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTINGS: A purposive sample of 16 participants (8 recipients, 8 'significant others') from a regional ren

Disenfranchised grief is a form of grief that remains unacknowledged and unsupported. Building on Doka's foundational concept of disenfranchised grief, the guiding framework for this pilot project was the Knowledge to Action framework. This study is a quantitative cross-sectional web-based survey, which included a validated questionnaire: the Witnessing Disenfranchised Grief Scale. The Witnessing Disenfranchised Grief Scale measures how participants feel their grief is recognized and validated by friends and family versus administrators or supervisors. A χ2 analysis (P < .05) was completed wit

Pet owners may experience grief following the loss of their pets, stemming from the disruption of the emotional bond between them and their pets. This study aimed to examine the relationship between pet attachment and pet loss grief. A total of 160 college students who had experienced pet loss completed measures assessing pet attachment, deliberate rumination, pet loss grief, continuing bonds, and disenfranchised grief before their mental health course in China. The results indicated that deliberate rumination mediated the relationship between pet attachment and pet loss grief. Additionally, c

Background: Perceiving that society disregards grief after pregnancy loss (disenfranchised grief) elevates bereaved parents' psychological burden. Objective: In this research, we aimed to compare the disenfranchisement of pregnancy loss with four other loss types considering the bereaved's gender.Method: We collected data from Turkish participants (N = 1,280) using a 5 (loss type) x 2 (gender) between-subjects design with randomly assigned vignettes. Participants reported their expected grief and behavioural tendencies toward the bereaved. We conducted MANOVA and ANOVA analyses. Results: Results

Grief is a complex and multifaceted process. While there is no reason to think that the grieving process would be dissimilar if an LGBTQ+ individual loses a partner than the grief of a heterosexual individual, they often receive and perceive less practical and emotional support, empathy and are treated unequally legally post loss. To date no studies have investigated whether this experience (disenfranchised loss) more likely leads to prolonged grief disorder or other mental health sequelae. This article describes aspects of disenfranchised grief, loneliness, and artificial intelligence for emo

Despite significant efforts to support those bereaved by intrauterine death, they remain susceptible to avoidable psychological harm such as disenfranchised grief, misplaced guilt, and emotional shock. This is in part because the words available to describe intrauterine death-"miscarriage," "spontaneous abortion," and "pregnancy loss"-are referentially ambiguous. Despite appearing to refer to one event, they can refer to two distinct events: the baby's death and his preterm delivery. Disenfranchised grief increases when people understand "miscarriage" as the physical process of preterm deliver

Carceral settings prevent individuals from engaging in supportive grief processing and contribute to compounded and disenfranchised grief. This is particularly relevant for individuals sentenced to life or long prison sentences during childhood. Relying on qualitative interviews, this study explored death-related loss and grief experiences, before, during, and after incarceration, within a sample of 46 individuals resentenced and released from prison following a long sentence in their youth. Study findings emphasized the lack of grief spaces in carceral settings, often prompting deferred grief

OBJECTIVES: In Australia, 15-20% of pregnancies result in miscarriage, and 0.69% in stillbirth. Pregnancy loss is a distressing experience for parents, with many turning to their own parents for support. Pregnancy loss has been identified as an ambiguous loss, leading to disenfranchised grief. However little research has been conducted regarding grandparents' experiences following pregnancy loss. Much of what is known comes indirectly from family studies of grief and loss. This study aimed to explore grandparents' experiences of loss and grief, following a child's pregnancy loss.

Background: Sibling bereavement profoundly affects family systems, yet little is known about bereaved siblings from immigrant communities where family structures have been destabilised by migration prior to the loss. The Ethiopian-Israeli community constitutes a distinct minority group of immigrants in Israel, characterised by unique cultural heritage and by skin colour that distinguishes its members from the general population. This visible difference subjects the community to racism and discrimination in ways that parallel the experiences of Black communities worldwide. Objective: This study'

This study explores the unique grief experiences of mothers who have lost one of their babies after a twin pregnancy. It aims to provide an in-depth understanding of their emotions, the challenges they faced, and their coping strategies. The data were analyzed using six-phase thematic analysis. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with seven mothers in Türkiye who experienced this loss. The analysis revealed that mothers experienced an intense emotional duality characterized by simultaneous grief and attachment to the surviving infant. Mothers described feelings of

BACKGROUND: Re-entry adjustment affects Australian cross cultural workers returning home; and for many, loss and grief issues arise. General practitioners are often the first point of contact in the health care system and are well placed to deal with these issues.
OBJECTIVE: This article examines strategies that GPs can use to support the Australian cross cultural worker on re-entry, and focuses on recognition of re-entry adjustment, the role of loss and grief issues, and the importance of dealing with these issues.
DISCUSSION: Australian cross cultural workers are valued members of their co

The loss of a companion animal can provoke grief whose intensity rivals human bereavement, yet its biological basis remains largely uncharted. This structured narrative review synthesizes neurobiological, endocrinological, immunological, and psychosocial evidence into a mechanistic framework offered not as established fact but as a source of testable hypotheses. We trace the substrates of the human-animal bond across six interacting systems and propose how disruption of each upon an animal's death may drive grief. Three carry comparatively robust analogical support (oxytocinergic signaling, hy

The death of a child around the time of birth is one of the most profoundly distressing events any parent will experience. These deaths are not uncommon, but are often hidden, along with the grief of mothers, fathers and families. Social stigma and negative attitudes are inextricably linked to underreporting of babies’ deaths in low- and middle-income countries. A failure to recognise the value of these lost lives leads to disenfranchised grief and diminished preventive efforts to reduce stillbirth and neonatal deaths. Acknowledging these deaths to bring them ‘out of the shadows’17 and compass

CONTEXT: LGBTQ+ individuals face grieving processes complicated by minority stress, structural discrimination, and fears related to disclosure of their sexual orientation or gender identity, which leads to disenfranchised grief within healthcare systems that remain heteronormative. Recent literature on palliative care highlights inequities in access, a lack of recognition of chosen families, and gaps in professionals' LGBTQ+ cultural competence.
OBJECTIVE: To explore research published between 2021 and 2026 on grief and bereavement-related experiences among LGBTQ+ adults in healthcare and pal

This grounded theory study gathered descriptions the bereavement experience for adults with intellectual disabilities (IDD) through the eyes and voices of a small sample of grief counselors. The counselors described bereaved adults with IDD as individuals who faced potentially heightened effects of the broken attachment bonds, increased risk of coping obstacles, long histories of unrecognized losses, and disenfranchised grief. The participants described bereaved adults with IDD (who sought treatment) as getting pushed to the sidelines to deal with their losses in isolation and confusion. It be

OBJECTIVES: Grief and bereavement care (GBC) remains an underrecognized component of pediatric palliative care (PPC), contributing to the emotional and psychological burden experienced by patients, families, and healthcare professionals (HCPs). This perspective review examines gaps in GBC, defines key types of grief in pediatric settings, and proposes a framework to improve patient- and family-centered grief support.
METHODS: We conducted a narrative perspective review using PubMed and Google Scholar to identify literature on GBC in PPC. Search terms included combinations of "grief," "bereave

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Older homeless persons can experience relief when accessing housing. However, becoming housed can also elicit the (re)emergence of loss and grief. Building on the notion of disenfranchised grief, this study sought to better understand how grief works together with relief to shape older persons' experiences living in long-term transitional housing.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: 11 older persons with experience of homelessness participated in up to 3 photovoice interviews in Montreal, Canada. Informed by the principles of interpretative phenomenology, their accounts an
