Disgust in anorexia nervosa: Testing a theoretical model connecting negative body image to disgust propensity, disgust sensitivity, and self-disgust.

Consistent with the view that disgust is involved in the persistence of eating disorder symptomatology, it has been found that disgust propensity is related to a negative body image. Importantly, earlier research in non-clinical samples provided preliminary evidence that this relationship could be statistically accounted for by self-disgust. The current study tested the robustness of this finding and examined if this pattern would also be evident when including individuals with and without clinically diagnosed anorexia nervosa (AN). In addition, we tested whether the relationship between self-

Disgust and disgust sensitivity in spider phobia: facial EMG in response to spider and oral disgust imagery.

Increasing evidence suggests that disgust and fear of contamination is involved in spider phobia. Yet, because the evidence exclusively relies on self-report data it can not be ruled out these findings are produced by mechanisms such as a negative attribution bias, or imprecise emotional labeling. Therefore, the present study sought to complement these previous studies by including physiological measures (i.e., facial EMG). Highly spider fearful (n = 24) and explicitly nonfearful women (n = 24) were exposed to general disgust-eliciting and spider relevant material using guided imagery (general

A Swedish translation and validation of the Disgust Scale: a measure of disgust sensitivity.

The psychometric properties of a Swedish version of Haidt, McCauley and Rozin's (1994) Disgust Scale were studied. Confirmatory factor analysis of the original model with eight factors (food, animals, body products, sex, body envelope violations, death, hygiene, and magic) provided satisfactory fit to the data (N= 280), significantly better than to the alternative one-factor and five-factor models. As in the US version women scored significantly higher than men. Positive correlations with measures of food neophobia (r= 0.30, p < 0.0001) and nausea frequency (rs= 0.28, p < 0.001) indicate conve

Disgust Sensitivity and Self-Disgust in Individuals with Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis.

INTRODUCTION: Disgust is an adaptive basic emotion that promotes avoidance of potential pathogen threats through aversive affect and rejection responses. In chronic inflammatory skin diseases, visible skin alterations may function as contamination cues, yet the role of individual differences in disgust sensitivity and self-disgust (comprising personal and behavioral dimensions) remains largely unexplored. METHODS: We examined disgust sensitivity and self-disgust in adults with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, contrasting scores with non-clinical norms and evaluating links to clinical and psyc

Disgust-Related Olfactory Processing: The Role of Gender and Trait Disgust.

For the rejection of disgusting and potentially health-threatening food, the sense of smell plays a critical role. We conducted two experiments in order to investigate the role of gender and trait disgust (the temporally stable tendency to experience disgust across different situations) on disgust-related olfactory processing. A total of 40 men and women (Study 1), as well as a group of women divided according to high versus low trait disgust (Study 2, n = 59), were compared with regard to their odor thresholds for carbon disulfide (which smells like spoiled food) and a control stimulus ( n-bu

Disgust Sensitivity and Support for Organ Donation: Time to Take Disgust Seriously.

BACKGROUND: There are currently roughly 10,000 Germans on the organ waiting list, and that number is over 113,000 in the USA. There is a clear need to increase support for organ donation in general and to increase the number of registered donors in particular. OBJECTIVE: The current study examines the relationship between disgust sensitivity and attitudes towards organ donation and the possession of an organ donor card. The study also examines other important correlates of attitudes towards organ donation, such as fear, trust, and knowledge regarding organ donation. DESIGN: The study involve

OCD: obsessive-compulsive … disgust? The role of disgust in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Recent research has identified the important role of disgust in the symptomatology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Exaggerated and inappropriate disgust reactions may drive some of the symptoms of OCD, and in some cases, may even eclipse feelings of anxiety. This paper reviews behavioural and neuroimaging research that recognizes the prominent role of disgust in contributing to OCD symptoms, especially contamination-based symptoms. We discuss how elevated behavioural and biological markers of disgust reported in OCD populations support the need for alternative clinical treatment strate

Disgusted, but amused: positive emotion attenuates disgust elicited by film clips.

BACKGROUND: Disorders like obsessive-compulsive disorder are associated with heightened disgust. Research suggests that dominant methods for treating such disorders (e.g., exposure therapies) are less effective at targeting disgust. Alternative strategies are needed to enhance treatment effectiveness. METHODS: In two studies, we investigated positive emotion (elicited via humorous content) for attenuating disgust responses to film clips. In Study 1, n = 174 undergraduates were randomized to view either a humorous, sad, or neutral clip prior to a disgusting clip. In study 2, n = 294 undergradu

Disgust and Huntington's disease.

The disproportionate impairment for the recognition of facial expressions of disgust in patients with Huntington's disease (HD) forms a double dissociation with the impaired recognition of fear that has been reported in amygdala patients. The dissociation has generated discussion regarding the potential existence of neural substrates dedicated to the recognition of facial signals of specific emotions. The aim of this study was to establish whether the impairment for disgust in HD was restricted solely to the domain of facial perception, or whether HD patients also demonstrate impairment in oth

Attention bias for disgust.

Disgust was originally theorized as a defense against the oral incorporation of offensive objects. Recent research suggests disgust serves as a defense against a wider range of objects and situations in the environment, and may contribute to phobic avoidance. As such, disgust sensitivity was explored for attention and memory biases. Using a sample of 60 undergraduates, an attention bias towards disgust words on a Stroop Color-naming Task was found across all subjects following an emotional priming task. When participants were primed with disgust stories, disgust sensitivity was positively rela

Self-disgust and disgust sensitivity are increased in anorexia nervosa inpatients, but only self-disgust mediates between comorbid and core psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: The possible role of abnormal disgust processing in the development and course of anorexia nervosa (AN) has been emphasized in theoretical models and research. However, disgust toward external stimuli and self-disgust have not yet been investigated together in a clinical sample of AN patients. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to measure these constructs and examine their role in shaping eating pathology in AN patients and healthy controls (HCs), considering comorbid depressive and anxiety psychopathology. The study also aimed at testing the possible mediational roles of both

Developing an implicit measure of disgust propensity and disgust sensitivity: examining the role of implicit disgust propensity and sensitivity in obsessive-compulsive tendencies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is increasing evidence that disgust responding occurs at both a primary and secondary level in the form of disgust propensity and disgust sensitivity. The unique contributions of anxiety and disgust need to be established if disgust is to be implicated in the etiology of anxiety disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The primary objective of the current study was to develop two separate implicit measures of disgust propensity and sensitivity and to explicate the role of implicit disgust propensity and sensitivity in avoidance behavior and OC ten

Individual differences in disgust sensitivity modulate neural responses to aversive/disgusting stimuli.

Little is known about how individual differences in trait disgust sensitivity modulate the neural responses to disgusting stimuli in the brain. Thirty-seven adult healthy volunteers completed the Disgust Scale (DS) and viewed alternating blocks of disgusting and neutral pictures from the International Affective Picture System while undergoing fMRI scanning. DS scores correlated positively with activations in brain regions previously associated with disgust (anterior insula, ventrolateral prefrontal cortex-temporal pole, putamen-globus pallidus, dorsal anterior cingulate, and visual cortex) and

Self-Disgust within Eating Disordered Groups: Associations with Anxiety, Disgust Sensitivity and Sensory Processing.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between self-disgust and sensory processing within eating psychopathology. Five hundred and ninety-one women with a self-reported diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or who had no previous history of an eating disorder completed a battery of online questionnaires measuring disgust, emotion and sensory variables. Those with an eating disorder reported significantly higher rates of self-disgust than those with no history of disordered eating. In groups of women with self-reported bulimia, self-disgust was associated with sensation avoidance

Assessment of disgust sensitivity in children with an age-downward version of the Disgust Emotion Scale.

The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Disgust Emotion Scale for Children (DES-C). Principal components analysis of the DES-C data revealed five factors reflecting disgust toward (a) rotting foods, (b) injection and blood, (c) odors, (d) mutilation and death, and (e) animals, which were largely in keeping with the intended subscales. The DES-C showed good reliability, excellent convergent validity (as established by correlations with an alternative self-report index of disgust), fairly good predictive validity (as assessed by correlations with measures of fear/anxiety an

Specificity of disgust sensitivity in the prediction of fear and disgust responding to a brief spider exposure.

This study examined the specificity of disgust sensitivity in predicting fear and disgust responses to exposure to a spider. Participants high (n=22) and low (n=28) in spider fear completed self-report measures of disgust sensitivity, contamination fear, anxiety, and negative affect. They then participated in a behavioral avoidance task (BAT) in which they were briefly exposed to a realistic-looking, but fake, tarantula. Results revealed that disgust sensitivity was associated with fear and disgust responding to the BAT. The association between disgust sensitivity and disgust responding to the

Sexual Disgust Trumps Pathogen Disgust in Predicting Voter Behavior During the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.

Why is disgust sensitivity associated with socially conservative political views? Is it because socially conservative ideologies mitigate the risks of infectious disease, whether by promoting out-group avoidance or by reinforcing norms that sustain antipathogenic practices? Or might it be because socially conservative ideologies promote moral standards that advance a long-term, as opposed to a short-term, sexual strategy? Recent attempts to test these two explanations have yielded differing results and conflicting interpretations. Here, we contribute to the literature by examining the relation

Attentional Processing of Disgust and Fear and Its Relationship With Contamination-Based Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms: Stronger Response Urgency to Disgusting Stimuli in Disgust-Prone Individuals.

Disgust has recently been characterized as a low-urgency emotion, particularly compared to fear. The aim of the present study is to clarify whether behavioral inhibition during disgust engagement is characteristic of a low-urgency emotion and thus indicates self-imposed attentional avoidance in comparison to fear. Therefore, 54 healthy participants performed an emotional go/no-go task with disgust- and fear-relevant as well as neutral pictures. Furthermore, heart rate activity and facial muscle activity on the fear-specific m. corrugator supercilli and the disgust-specific m. levator labii wer
