Increasing prebunking effectiveness to aid disinformation-susceptible publics in overcoming vaccine-related disinformation.

In the dynamic intersection of health communication and disinformation, this study investigates tailored intervention strategies for disinformation-susceptible public segments classified by the motivation-knowledge-attitude framework. Using a two-phase survey and experimental design with American adults, participants were segmented into four public types (disinformation-immune, vulnerable, receptive, and amplifying) and exposed to one of three inoculation message conditions: autonomy supportive, autonomy controlling, or control. Data were analyzed using ANCOVA with Bonferroni-adjusted post-hoc

Combating Scientific Disinformation on Gender-Affirming Care.

Scientific disinformation is false and misleading information that is used intentionally by legal and political actors to sway public opinion and oppose facts. In recent years, disinformation has become a tool for authorities to limit gender-affirming health care (GAC) for transgender and gender-expansive youth who experience gender dysphoria. Existing modes of expert intervention in health policy may not be sufficient to match the pace of these quickly unfolding health care bans. A cross-disciplinary team of academics in medicine, psychology, and law assembled to challenge scientific disinfor

Disinformation and Epidemics: Anticipating the Next Phase of Biowarfare.

While biological warfare has classically been considered a threat requiring the presence of a distinct biological agent, we argue that in light of the rise of state-sponsored online disinformation campaigns we are approaching a fifth phase of biowarfare with a "cyber-bio" framing. By examining the rise of measles cases following disinformation campaigns connected to the US 2016 presidential elections, the rise of disinformation in the current novel coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, and the impact of misinformation on public health interventions during the 2014-2016 West Africa and 2019-2020 D

Disinformation on dietary supplements by German influencers on Instagram.

A significant proportion of the German population regularly consumes dietary supplements (NEM), and the market for these products is growing steadily. Dietary supplements are subject to food law and not pharmaceutical law. There are no official limits for the dosages of vitamins and minerals in Germany-only recommendations from institutions such as the Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR) or the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Dietary supplements are strongly advertised on Instagram in particular. In Germany, Instagram is the most popular social network and many influencers use the

A scoping review of COVID-19 online mis/disinformation in Black communities.

BACKGROUND: Mis/disinformation has reached an epidemic level with the COVID-19 virus and can be largely attributed to the growing digitalization of information and its rapid transmission via social media. Approximately 96% of Canadians and 80% of Americans report encountering COVID-19 dis/misinformation on at least one social media site/app. COVID-19 dis/misinformation promotes scepticism and a lack of confidence in COVID-19 interventions. Black people have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of negative impacts on their livelihoods and are also more likely to be

How Can Multi-Criteria Portfolio Decision Analysis Help Mitigate Mis/Disinformation?

In this paper, we examine and illustrate the relevance of multi-criteria portfolio decision analysis as an approach to addressing mis/disinformation risks. After summarizing representative applications of these methods, we draw on the framework for societal resilience developed in the Finnish COVID-19 Science to Panel to elaborate on the range of capabilities that can be leveraged to mitigate mis/disinformation, for example, by maintaining alertness, implementing risk management actions, and interacting with stakeholders to promote awareness. We then present a numerical case study that illustr

100 years later, little has changed in Brazil: disinformation and pandemic.

About 100 years separate the last two pandemics that hit humanity, but scientific development does not seem to have impacted Brazilian society, including its leaders. Remedies without scientific proof, obviously without effectiveness, have been used in Brazil against the Spanish flu and nothing has changed against COVID-19. But perhaps today the process of disinformation is worse because the Internet and social networks are too efficient to spread Fake News, resulting in doctors, politicians and journalists prescribing all kinds of innocuous medicines. In this way, Brazil and its government co

#JunkScience: Investigating pseudoscience disinformation in the Russian Internet Research Agency tweets.

Recent research has identified anti-vaccination propaganda in the so-called Russian Troll Tweets strongly associated with the 2016 US Presidential election. This study builds on this: hypothesising that if vaccination content was found in the sample, the Russia Tweets would be likely to contain other science content, and perhaps, similar pseudo or anti-science messages. As well as vaccination, climate change, genetically modified organisms, Ebola, flat Earth beliefs (flat Earthism) and Zika were found in the Russia tweets. Genetically modified organisms and flat Earthism appear to have been ca

Social media users' perceptions about health mis- and disinformation on social media.

This study used recently released nationally representative data with new measures on health information seeking to estimate the prevalence and predictors of adult social media users' perceptions of health mis- and disinformation on social media. Most adults who use social media perceive some (46%) or a lot (36%) of false or misleading health information on social media, but nearly one-fifth reported either none or a little (18%). More than two-thirds of participants reported that they were unable to assess social media information as true or false (67%). Our study identified certain populatio

Perceived Disinformation, Anxiety, and Depressive Symptoms in the Czech Population: Age-Specific Associations.

The main goal of the study was to examine the relationship between anxiety and depressive symptoms and the perception of disinformation in the Czech population. The research was performed on a sample of 2867 respondents. Analytical processing was carried out through quasi-Poisson regression analysis separately for the three age groups (aged 16-39, 40-64, and 65-90). The dependent variables were the GAD-7 (Generalised Anxiety Disorder) and PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire) total scores, measuring anxiety and depressive symptoms, respectively. The independent variables were represented by the

Statistical misreasoning in online content about vaccines: Implications and recommendations for addressing disinformation.

BACKGROUND: Statistical misreasoning is a key mechanism through which anti-vaccine narratives distort scientific information and undermine public confidence in immunisation. Although prior research has examined thematic and ideological features of vaccine misinformation, little is known about the specific errors in numerical reasoning that shape users' interpretations of vaccine-related data. METHODS: A total of 597 Polish-language Facebook posts expressing anti-vaccine views and containing references to statistical information were analysed. Based on previous research on statistical cognitio

Psychological understanding of misinformation and disinformation in the face of environmental crises: Introduction to the special issue.

Exposure to and belief in misinformation and disinformation can foster misunderstandings and misperceptions about climate change and other environmental issues, ultimately delaying essential progress and action. Against this backdrop, this special issue presents a collection of nine papers that deepen and broaden psychological insights into the content of environment-related misinformation and how people respond to it. In this introduction, we provide a brief overview of the concepts of misinformation and disinformation, followed by a discussion of the scope and contributions of the nine paper

Challenges and Reflections on Pandemic Disinformation: The Case of Hydroxychloroquine and the Implications for Global Public Health.

This text addresses the implications of misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the use of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and other drugs based on a specific publication. The article titled "Deaths induced by compassionate use of hydroxychloroquine during the first COVID-19 wave: an estimate," published in 2024 in the journal Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy, reveals 17 000 deaths associated with the inappropriate use of HCQ in 6 countries, excluding Brazil and India. The dissemination of ineffective drugs, the persistence in recommending HCQ in Brazil, and the lack of an effective r

Establishing a taxonomy of potential hazards associated with communicating medical science in the age of disinformation.

OBJECTIVES: Disinformation on medical matters has become an increasing public health concern. Public engagement by scientists, clinicians and patient advocates can contribute towards public understanding of medicine. However, depth of feeling on many issues (notably vaccination and cancer) can lead to adverse reactions for those communicating medical science, including vexatious interactions and targeted campaigns. Our objective in this work is to establish a taxonomy of common negative experiences encountered by those communicating medical science, and suggest guidelines so that they may be c
