The management of disorders of sexual differentiation (DSD) involves a multidisciplinary approach. The main aim of analysis was to study the phenotype-karyotype correlation in North Indian children with DSD. The records of pediatric DSD were retrieved and characteristics noted. Of total of 58 children, 43 (74.1%) and 10 (17.2%) were raised as males and females respectively. The mean age at presentation was 31.3+/-9 months. The karyotype was 46XY in 45 (77.6%) and 46XX in 12 (20.7%). CAH was commonest cause of DSD (36.2%), followed by gonadal dysgenesis. Of the 15 patients of 46 XY CAH, there w

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the recent information regarding disorders of sex development (DSD) which contribute to, as well as highlight, the need for greater understanding of genetic mutations and the dire need for specific outcome information.
RECENT FINDINGS: New information is primarily related to the identification of genetic mutations and other gene variations that impact reproductive system development. These new data add to the increasingly complex list of genes and the multigenetic effects involved in DSD. Several reviews outline the approach to diagnosis and management of the pati

Disorders of sex development (DSDs) are a genetically and clinically heterogeneous group of congenital conditions of the urogenital tract and reproductive system. Time and spatially controlled transcription factors, signal molecules, and an array of different hormones are involved in the development of sex characteristics, and variations in their pathways and actions are associated with DSD. These conditions may be caused by numerical or structural variations in sex chromosomes as well as autosomes, variations in genes involved in gonadal and/or genital development, and changes in gonadal and/

Disorders of sex development (DSD) represent a spectrum of conditions in which chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomic sex are atypical and affect 1 in 4,500-5,000 live births. The diagnosis of DSD raises concerns of tumor risk and treatment as well as future fertility preservation. We review the current understanding of the types of gonadal tumors that arise in DSD patients as well as possible markers and treatment. The goal is to inform the members of the DSD team (urologist, endocrinologist, geneticist, psychologist) of the latest findings regarding malignancy in DSD. PubMed® and Google ScholarTM

Disorders of sex development (DSD) are defined as 'congenital conditions in which the development of chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical sex is atypical' [Lee et al., Pediatrics 2006;118:e488-e500]. Studies conducted in Western countries, with low rates of consanguinity, show that truly ambiguous genitalia have an estimated incidence of 1:5,000 births. There are indications that the prevalence of DSD is higher in endogamous communities. The incidence of ambiguous genitalia in Saudi Arabia has been estimated at 1:2,500 live births; whilst in Egypt, it has been estimated at 1:3,000 live births.

In two prepubertal dogs of female phenotype, a clitoral enlargement with a penile structure leading to recurring inflammation of the vagina was diagnosed. Progesterone, oestrogen and testosterone serum concentrations were radioimmunologically analysed. The histology of the penile structure, the gonads and the uterus was made via a hematoxylin-eosin staining method. The chromosome constitution being analysed by the method of Basur and Gilman (1964) was 2n = 78,XX. Regarding all results of this investigation the diagnose was XX-male. The development of this sexual disorder is discussed. The surg

Disorders of sex development (DSD) is a congenital condition in which the development of chromosomes, gonads, hormones, and reproductive structures are atypical. DSD brings with it a psychological impact on the affected individual and their families. The consensus statement on management of DSD strongly advised an integrated and multidisciplinary approach in providing care to the affected individuals. Studies have been conducted focusing on medical intervention, and more recently, there is increasing attention paid to psychological aspects of DSD. However, studies reporting cultural aspects of

During recent years the epidemiology of disorders of sex development (DSD) has been more clearly delineated. Here, we provide a detailed and up-to-date synopsis of the epidemiology of DSD, incorporating the latest body of knowledge in the field for sex chromosome DSD (Turner, Klinefelter, 47,XXX, and 47,XXY syndrome, and 45,X/46,XY mosaicism) as well as for 46,XX DSD and 46,XY DSD focusing on females with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), males with 46,XX DSD, females with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome and females with 46,XY DSD. Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) are anomalies occurring in the process of fetal sexual differentiation that result in a discordance between the chromosomal sex and the sex of the gonads and/or the internal and/or external genitalia. Congenital disorders affecting adrenal function may be associated with DSD in both 46,XX and 46,XY individuals, but the pathogenic mechanisms differ. While in 46,XX cases, the adrenal steroidogenic disorder is responsible for the genital anomalies, in 46,XY patients DSD results from the associated testicular dysfunction. Primary adrenal insufficiency, characteri

Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) are congenital anomalies in which there is a discordance between chromosomal, genetic, gonadal, and/or internal/external genital sex. In XY individuals, the process of fetal sex differentiation can be disrupted at the stage of gonadal differentiation, resulting in gonadal dysgenesis, a form of early fetal-onset primary hypogonadism characterized by insufficient androgen and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) production, which leads to the development of ambiguous or female genitalia. The process of sex differentiation can also be disrupted at the stage of genital d

CONTEXT: Disorders of sex development (DSDs) may arise from genetic defects in testis or ovary determination. Current analytical technologies and improved understanding of major regulatory pathways have cast new insight into the genetic basis for these disorders.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A PubMed search was performed for the years 2011-13 using the terms "disorder of sex development," "gonadal dysgenesis," "ovarian dysgenesis," "array CGH," and "whole exome sequencing." Only articles from peer-reviewed journals were included.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Key themes that emerged included aberrant regulat

Disorders of sex development comprise an array of congenital conditions with atypical development of chromosomal, gonadal, and anatomical sex affecting the genitourinary tract and in most instances also the endocrine-reproductive system. While the molecular basis of some of these disorders has been well established, it remains elusive in others. This holds true especially for disorders of sex development that are associated with other congenital malformations and abnormalities in a 'syndromic' condition. Syndromic disorders of sex development may be due to monogenic defects, biochemical abnorm

Disorders of sex development (DSD) is a broad term for congenital conditions with a discrepancy in chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomic sex. Pediatricians are often faced with the challenge of managing a newborn/infant with atypical genitalia or an older child with disordered puberty, which come under the purview of DSD. This article provides an update for pediatricians on comprehensive approach to DSD with a focus on atypical genitalia.

BACKGROUND: Children with ambiguous genitalia due to different chromosome or gonadal sex are a particular challenge concerning the diagnostic and therapeutic implications. Proximal hypospadias patients with normal gonadal development should be distinguished from children with DSD (disorders of sex development) to guarantee normal gender identity and the best possible surgical therapy.
OBJECTIVES: This paper focuses on the terminology, embryology, and pathophysiology of the different manifestations of DSD. The state of knowledge about this disease pattern with particular emphasis on proximal h

Fertility potential should be considered by the multidisciplinary team when addressing gender assignment, surgical management, and patient and family counselling of individuals with disorders of sex development. In 46,XY individuals, defects of gonadal differentiation or androgen or anti-Müllerian hormone synthesis or action result in incomplete or absent masculinization. In severe forms, raised as females, motherhood is possible with oocyte donation if Müllerian ducts have developed. In milder forms, raised as males, azoospermia or oligospermia are frequently found, however paternity has been

The management of disorders of sex development (DSD) has been a problem area for years, partly because clinicians have started to see that not all of their patients grow up to be happy adults content with the gender assigned to them at birth, and partly because of the vigorous activities of patient advocacy organizations who have publicized their unhappiness and disagreement about current practices to the world at large and to politicians in particular. Results from a large number of long-term outcome studies have been published in the last decade and this paper attempts to give an overview of

Disorders of sex development (DSDs) are a diverse group of conditions that can be challenging to diagnose accurately using standard phenotypic and biochemical approaches. Obtaining a specific diagnosis can be important for identifying potentially life-threatening associated disorders, as well as providing information to guide parents in deciding on the most appropriate management for their child. Within the past 5 years, advances in molecular methodologies have helped to identify several novel causes of DSDs; molecular tests to aid diagnosis and genetic counselling have now been adopted into c

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical value of ultrasonography in the management of disorders of sex development (DSDs).
METHODS: Ultrasonographic appearance and clinical data of 82 cases with DSD were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: In total, there were 54 cases with the male phenotype and 28 cases with the female phenotype. All 12 cases with ovotesticular DSD were confirmed by surgery or pathological examination. Furthermore, 2 of 12 cases with ovotesticular DSD were misdiagnosed by ultrasonography.
CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasonography can not only evaluate the internal sex orga
