Dissolved organic matter reduces algal accumulation of methylmercury.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) significantly decreased accumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) by the diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana in laboratory experiments. Live diatom cells accumulated two to four times more MeHg than dead cells, indicating that accumulation may be partially an energy-requiring process. Methylmercury enrichment in diatoms relative to ambient water was measured by a volume concentration factor (VCF). Without added DOM, the maximum VCF was 32 × 10(4) , and the average VCF (from 10 to 72 h) over all experiments was 12.6 × 10(4) . At very low (1.5 mg/L) added DOM, VCFs dropped b

Copper Safeguards Dissolved Organic Matter from Sunlight-Driven Photooxidation.

Sunlight plays a crucial role in the transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the associated carbon cycle in aquatic environments. This study demonstrates that the presence of nanomolar concentrations of copper (Cu) significantly decreases the rate of photobleaching and the rate of loss of electron-donating moieties of three selected types of DOM (including both terrestrial and microbially derived DOM) under simulated sunlight irradiation. Employing Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, we further confirm that Cu selectively inhibits the photooxidation of lig

Molecular transformation of dissolved organic matter in refinery wastewater.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has an important impact on the water treatment and reuse of petroleum refinery wastewater. In order to improve the treatment efficiency, it is necessary to understand the chemical composition of the DOM in the treatment processes. In this paper, the molecular composition of DOM in wastewater samples from a representative refinery were characterized. The transformation of various compounds along the wastewater treatment processes was investigated. A total of 61 heteroatomic class species were detected from the DOM extracts, in which CHO (molecules composed of carb

Importance of microbial soil organic matter processing in dissolved organic carbon production.

Soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC) sources and its seasonal dynamics are poorly known. We aimed to determine the contribution of plant and soil organic matter (SOM) to size classes of DOC in a field experiment with C3 to C4 vegetation change on two soil types through different seasons. Stable isotope ratios of DOC size classes were measured using size exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled online to liquid chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (LC-IRMS). SEC resolved DOC into three size classes: very high molecular weight/vHMW (> 10 kDa), high molecular weight/HMW (0.4-10 kDa), and l

Leaching dynamics of dissolved organic matter and particulate organic matter in stormwater runoff from floodplain soils.

Organic matter in floodplain soils undergoes complex leaching dynamics during stormwater runoff, directly impacting the water environmental quality of river basin. This study explored the leaching behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and particulate organic matter (POM) in soils from the upper Yellow River floodplain through simulated rainfall experiments. The results showed that DOM and POM were extensively released into the initial rainfall phase (0-20 min), followed by a gradual decline and stabilization in leaching rates. Tryptophan-like substances dominate in the DOM, contributing 4

ENVnet provides a global molecular resource of dissolved organic matter.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a central component of Earth's carbon cycle and one of the planet's most chemically diverse pools, yet the molecular structures of its constituents remain largely unresolved. This limitation has hindered our ability to link DOM composition to microbial processes and ecosystem function. Here we present ENVnet, a global molecular repository built from tandem mass spectrometry data collected across 13 terrestrial and aquatic environment types, including 419 newly generated samples that expand publicly available DOM metabolomics data and cover previously underrepr

Concurrent photolytic degradation of aqueous methylmercury and dissolved organic matter.

Monomethyl mercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin that threatens ecosystem viability and human health. In aquatic systems, the photolytic degradation of MeHg (photodemethylation) is an important component of the MeHg cycle. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is also affected by exposure to solar radiation (light exposure) leading to changes in DOM composition that can affect its role in overall mercury (Hg) cycling. This study investigated changes in MeHg concentration, DOM concentration, and the optical signature of DOM caused by light exposure in a controlled field-based experiment using water sa

Photodegradation of dissolved organic matter in ice under solar irradiation.

The photodegradation behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with different origins in ice under solar irradiation was investigated. Exposure to sunlight at 2.7 × 10(5) J m(-2) resulted in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) reductions of 22.1-36.5% in ice. The naturally occurring DOM had higher photodegradation potentials than the wastewater-derived DOM in ice. Ultraviolet (UV)-absorbing compounds in DOM, regardless of DOM origin, had much higher photodegradation potentials than gross DOC in ice. The susceptibility of UV-absorbing compounds with natural origin to sunlight exposure in ice was hi

Dissolved organic matter enhances microbial mercury methylation under sulfidic conditions.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is generally thought to lower metal bioavailability in aquatic systems due to the formation of metal-DOM complexes that reduce free metal ion concentrations. However, this model may not be pertinent for metal nanoparticles, which are now understood to be ubiquitous, sometimes dominant, metal species in the environment. The influence of DOM on Hg bioavailability to microorganisms was examined under conditions (0.5-5.0 nM Hg and 2-10 μM sulfide) that favor the formation of β-HgS(s) (metacinnabar) nanoparticles. We used the methylation of stable-isotope enriched (20

Dissolved organic matter enhances transport of PAHs to aquatic organisms.

In this study, the uptake of pyrene and benzo[b]fluoranthene by an aquatic worm (Lumbriculus variegatus) and a poly(dimethylsiloxane) coated glass fiber was studied at different humic acid concentrations. The accumulation of pyrene was not affected by the presence of the humic matrix. However, the accumulation rate of benzo[b]fluoranthene increased a factor of 3 for the fiber and a factor of 4 when 55 mg L(-1) dissolved organic carbon was added in the form of humic acid. The difference between the two chemicals can be explained by the higher affinity of benzo[b]fluoranthene for the dissolved h

Graph-based understanding of isomeric diversity in complex dissolved organic matter.

Characterizing the isomeric diversity of molecular formulas (MFs) in dissolved organic matter (DOM) is essential for advancing research across environmental and biomedical sciences. Ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHR MS), particularly when coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (LC-UHR MS), can resolve isomeric diversity chromatographically. However, its broad application is limited by high operational costs, the requirement for expert handling, and complex data interpretation. Here, we present GUIDE (Graph-based Understanding of Isomeric Diversity), a predictive framewo

Oxygen-dependent metabolism of dissolved organic matter in hypoxic marine environments.

Low-oxygen marine environments are dynamic hotspots where microbial activity and dissolved organic matter (DOM) cycling are altered, with implications for understanding ecosystem responses to intensifying anthropogenic pressures. The hypoxic barrier hypothesis (HBH) proposed a mechanism by which DOM cycling could be altered under hypoxia by the inhibition of non-respiratory oxidase enzymes, whereas respiration continued. To investigate oxygen-dependent changes in DOM composition and consequences of the HBH, we combined controlled mesocosm experiments with non-targeted metabolomics to identify

Effects of dissolved organic matter from different sources on ritonavir photolysis.

With the misuse of antiviral drugs, the residual levels of ritonavir (RTV) in aquatic environments continue to increase, potentially posing threats to ecosystems and human health. However, the current understanding of the photochemical behavior of RTV in water, especially the mechanism by which dissolved organic matter (DOM) from different sources affects the indirect photolysis of RTV, remains limited. This study systematically investigated the effects of DOM from different sources (including sludge, algae, dustfall, and soil, namely SL-DOM, AL-DOM, DF-DOM, and SO-DOM, respectively) on the ph

Deciphering the Virus Signal Within the Marine Dissolved Organic Matter Pool.

Viruses are ubiquitously distributed in the marine environment, influencing microbial population dynamics and biogeochemical cycles on a large scale. Due to their small size, they fall into the oceanographic size-class definition of dissolved organic matter (DOM; <0.7 μm). The purpose of our study was to investigate if there is a detectable imprint of virus particles in natural DOM following standard sample preparation and molecular analysis routines using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). Therefore, we tested if a molecular signature deriving from virus particles can be dete

Quantitative determination of redox-active carbonyls of natural dissolved organic matter.

Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous in environment and plays an important role in numerous environmental processes. Although the molecular basis of the reactivity of DOM remains poorly understood due to its extreme complexity, redox-active carbonyls (aromatic ketones/aldehydes and quinones) within DOM are believed vitally important. Except the rough determination of total carbonyls (including non-redox active -COOR) based on inflexible 13C chemical shift range by expensive and time-consuming solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), there is no ready method to quantify red

Methylmercury photodemethylation is inhibited in lakes with high dissolved organic matter.

Photodemethylation can be one of the primary processes for loss of neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in freshwater lakes. Few studies have quantified seasonal variations in photodemethylation rate constants as a function of dissolved organic matter (DOM). We conducted 1-week irradiation experiments in two seasons to test for spatial and temporal differences in photodemethylation potential in temperate lake waters. Six study lakes in Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia were sampled in summer and fall to include a range of naturally occurring DOM concentrations (4.4-13.4 and 3.9-16.4 mg C L-1, r

Molecular weight distribution of phosphorus fraction of aquatic dissolved organic matter.

This study characterized dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) that is discharged from the Everglades Agricultural Area as part of the larger pool of aquatic dissolved organic matter (DOM). Whole water samples collected at the Everglades stormwater treat area 1 West (STA-1 W) were fractionated using a batch ultrafiltration method to separate organic compounds based on apparent molecular weight (AMW). Each AMW fraction of DOM was characterized for phosphorus, carbon, nitrogen, UV absorbance, and fluorescence. Photodegradation of estrone enhanced by dissolved organic matter under simulated sunlight.

In the present work the degradation of estrone (E1) a natural estrogenic hormone has been studied under simulated solar irradiation. The photodegradation of E1 has been investigated in the absence and in the presence of 7.7-8.9 mg L(-1) of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), under solar light simulation with irradiance approximating that of the sun. DOC extracts from different origins have been used. Half-lives ranging between 3.9 h and 7.9 h were observed. Results indicated that E1 was photodegraded even in the absence of DOC. The presence of DOC was found to enhance the degradation of E1. Experi

Interaction between biochar-dissolved organic matter and chlorophenols during biochar adsorption.

Biochar (BC) has been widely applied in the remediation of chlorophenols (CPs) from contaminated sites in which the role and mechanisms of BC dissolved organic matter (BDOM), as a crucial component of BC, with CPs are largely unknown and thus need to be investigated. In this study, DOM was derived from peanut hulls (PDOM) and corn stalks (CDOM) as BC sources, and the interactions between PDOM/CDOM and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) were analysed using excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy (EEM) in combination with multiple models. EEM combined with fluorescence region integration (EEM-FRI) indi

Soil dissolved organic matter affects mercury immobilization by biogenic selenium nanoparticles.

Molecular weight (MW) heterogeneity is a fundamental property of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil, which has been demonstrated to influence the binding behaviour between DOM and engineered nanoparticles. In the present study, DOM, extracted from black soil, was dialyzed into four fractions: above 10,000 Da, 3500-10,000 Da, 1000-3500 Da and 100-1000 Da. Homoaggregation and fluorescence quenching titration of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) was examined in the presence of the different DOM fractions, as well as the consequences for immobilization of elemental mercury. It was found that the
