Individual differences in distance perception.

Distance perception is among the most pervasive mental phenomena and the oldest research topics in behavioural science. However, we do not understand well the most pervasive finding of distance perception research, that of large individual differences. There are large individual differences in acrophobia (fear of heights), which we commonly assume consists of an abnormal fear of stimuli perceived normally. Evolved navigation theory (ENT) instead suggests that acrophobia consists of a more normal fear of stimuli perceived abnormally. ENT suggests that distance perception individual differences

Social processing distorts physical distance perception.

Psychopathy is traditionally linked to higher-level cognitive processes, but its impact on low-level cognitive functions has remained largely unexplored. This study investigates the relationship between the fundamental cognitive function of physical distance estimation and our social predisposition towards others, as captured by psychopathic traits, grouped into the three facets of Fearless Dominance, Self-Centered Impulsivity and Coldheartedness. Using an innovative experimental design, participants estimated the distance of an approaching avatar agent. We demonstrate that social processing,

Distance perception in autism and typical development.

Children with autism and typically developing children walked blindfolded to a previously seen target (blindwalking task) and matched the frontal to the sagittal extent of a pattern formed by ropes on the ground (L-matching task). All participants were accurate in the blindwalking task. Children with autism were also very accurate in the matching task. By contrast, in the matching task typically developing children made substantial underestimations that were inversely correlated with age. These findings support models that posit independent representations for the egocentric distance to a targ

Does speed equal distance over duration in perception?

If the perceived speed of a moving object equals the perceived distance traveled in perceived duration, speed perception should inherit distance illusions, unless they elicit proportional duration illusions. Three experiments systematically evaluated whether an object appears to move faster (a) along subjectively longer horizontal lines (Müller-Lyer distance illusion) and (b) around subjectively larger circles (Ebbinghaus size illusion). The predicted Müller-Lyer and Ebbinghaus speed illusions were consistently absent across absolute (Experiments 1a and 1b), binary comparative (Experiments 2a

Distance perception in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess monocular and binocular distance perception, and stereoacuity, in individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) who reported the symptom of "poor depth perception"; METHODS: Ten patients with mTBI were tested and compared with ten visually-normal asymptomatic individuals in the following areas: perceived distance, stereoacuity at distance (3 meters) and near (40 cm), and a 9-item 5-point rating-scale questionnaire related to distance perception. Distance perception was assessed under monocular and binocular viewing conditions in both c

The ground is dominant in infants' perception of relative distance.

When making relative distance judgments, adults attend to information provided by the ground surface and generally ignore information provided by ceiling surfaces. In the present study, we asked whether this ground dominance effect is present in infancy. Groups of 5- and 7-month-old infants viewed a display depicting textured ground and ceiling surfaces. Two toys, which were attached to vertical rods, were affixed to the display. The toys/rods were positioned so that one toy was specified as being nearer by the ground surface but farther away by the ceiling surface, while the other toy was spe

Impaired distance perception and size constancy following bilateral occipitoparietal damage.

Accurate distance perception depends on the processing and integration of a variety of monocular and binocular cues. Dorsal stream lesions can impair this process, but details of this neurocognitive relationship remain unclear. Here, we tested a patient with bilateral occipitoparietal damage and severely impaired stereopsis. We addressed four related questions: (1) Can distance and size perception survive limitations in perceiving monocular and binocular cues? (2) Are egocentric (self-referential) and allocentric (object-referential) distance judgments similarly impaired? (3) Are distance meas

Distance and Size Perception in Astronauts during Long-Duration Spaceflight.

Exposure to microgravity during spaceflight is known to elicit orientation illusions, errors in sensory localization, postural imbalance, changes in vestibulo-spinal and vestibulo-ocular reflexes, and space motion sickness. The objective of this experiment was to investigate whether an alteration in cognitive visual-spatial processing, such as the perception of distance and size of objects, is also taking place during prolonged exposure to microgravity. Our results show that astronauts on board the International Space Station exhibit biases in the perception of their environment. Objects' heig

Monkeypox outbreak: Psychological distance, risk perception, and support for risk mitigation.

Building on construal level theory, results from a survey based on a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults (N = 1000) indicate an indirect effect of social distance and temporal distance perception on emotional response, policy support, and vaccination intention through risk perception. This study also reveals that social dominance orientation contributes to perceived psychological distance of the monkeypox outbreak. These results suggest that communication about a public health crisis such as monkeypox needs to emphasize its broader community impact, rather than focusing on the prim

Small or far away? Size and distance perception in the praying mantis.

Stereo or '3D' vision is an important but costly process seen in several evolutionarily distinct lineages including primates, birds and insects. Many selective advantages could have led to the evolution of stereo vision, including range finding, camouflage breaking and estimation of object size. In this paper, we investigate the possibility that stereo vision enables praying mantises to estimate the size of prey by using a combination of disparity cues and angular size cues. We used a recently developed insect 3D cinema paradigm to present mantises with virtual prey having differing disparity

Enhanced distance perception in automated robotic endoscopy through scale-aware monocular depth estimation.

PURPOSE: The increasing demand for distance perception in surgical robotic systems is crucial for ensuring safe and effective operations in minimally invasive procedures. Accurate distance awareness allows surgical robots to autonomously navigate complex anatomical structures, particularly in endoscopic environments with limited visual feedback. Existing distance estimation methods often rely on expensive sensors that can pose safety risks and are ineffective under these conditions. To address this challenge, this work develops a monocular image-based framework leveraging geometric modeling an

Spatial distance and reactivity traits alter the positive perception of brushing by ewes.

Gentle handling seems to elicit positive states in sheep. The study investigated whether spatial distance alters sheep responses to brushing and whether spatial distance is influenced by reactivity. Twenty Romane ewes were assessed in three sessions: in Sessions 1 and 3, one grid separated the test animal from pen mates, with no distance between them, and in Session 2 two grids separated the test animal from pen mates by a distance of about 1.7 m. Ewes had been genetically selected for low (R-) or high (R+) behavioural reactivity to social isolation. Body postures, head orientation, ear postur

Plunging into the pool of death: imagining a dangerous outcome influences distance perception.

We examined whether manipulating the imagined consequences of falling would influence the perception of height, distance, and size. In experiment 1, height and size perception were measured when participants stood at a short height (0.89 m) or a medium height (1.91 m) above either an empty pool or a pool filled with a bed of nails. Participants who viewed the bed of nails and imagined falling into it estimated both the height as taller and the size of the bed of nails as larger than participants who imagined falling into an empty pool. In a second experiment, participants overestimated the hor

Correlation between depth perception by three-rods test and stereoacuity by distance Randot Stereotest.

BACKGROUND: The examination of depth perception with three-rods test, in addition to visual acuity testing, is required to obtain motor vehicle license to drive taxies and trucks, according to the Road Traffic Act in Japan. The aim of this study was to examine whether the results of the three-rods test would correlate with the results of static stereopsis tests, used in ophthalmic practice. METHODS: This study involved 54 normal subjects, 9 women and 45 men, with ages ranging from 18 to 25 (mean, 20.8) years. All had visual acuity of 0.8 or better with or without glasses or contact lenses cor

Occupancy-Aware Neural Distance Perception for Manipulator Obstacle Avoidance in the Tokamak Vacuum Vessel.

Accurate distance perception and collision reasoning are crucial for robotic manipulation in the confined interior of tokamak vacuum vessels. Traditional mesh- or voxel-based methods suffer from discretization artifacts, discontinuities, and heavy memory requirements, making them unsuitable for continuous geometric reasoning and optimization-based planning. This paper presents an Occupancy-Aware Neural Distance Perception (ONDP) framework that serves as a compact and differentiable geometric sensor for manipulator obstacle avoidance in reactor-like environments. To address the inadequacy of co

Perception of distance during self-motion depends on the brain's internal model of the terrain.

The body's geometrical relationship with the terrain is important for depth perception of human and non-human terrestrial animals. Static human observers in the dark employ the brain's internal model of the terrain, the intrinsic bias, to represent the ground as an allocentric reference frame for coding distance. However, it is unknown if the same ground-based coding process operates when observers walk in a cue-impoverished environment with visible ground surface. We explored this by measuring human observers' perceived locations of dimly-lit targets after a short walk in the dark from the ho

Retinal and visual cortex distance from transcranial magnetic stimulation of the vertex affects phosphene perception.

Recent studies claim that the perception of flashes of light (i.e., phosphenes) can be induced by stimulation of higher visual areas, including parietal cortex, suggesting a critical role of these regions in generating visual percepts. In this study, we show that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of even the vertex can induce phosphenes, but that their neural origins are likely to be a consequence of current spread into visual areas (e.g., retina or visual cortex). After vertex stimulation, subjects with smaller head circumferences-for whom the distances from the coil to retina and visua

A catch-up illusion arising from a distance-dependent perception bias in judging relative movement.

The perception of relative target movement from a dynamic observer is an unexamined psychological three body problem. To test the applicability of explanations for two moving bodies participants repeatedly judged the relative movements of two runners chasing each other in video clips displayed on a stationary screen. The chased person always ran at 3 m/s with an observer camera following or leading at 4.5, 3, 1.5 or 0 m/s. We harmonized the chaser speed in an adaptive staircase to determine the point of subjective equal movement speed between runners and observed (i) an underestimation of chas

Effectiveness and Learner Perception of a Gamified Distance-Learning Program for Point-of-Care Ultrasound.

Objectives The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted in-person medical school teaching, and certain parts of the curriculum were disproportionately affected, including traditional hands-on training in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). It is challenging to find interactive methods for teaching POCUS while conveying image acquisition techniques via online video-conference platforms for distance learning. Our objective was to evaluate the effectiveness and learners perceptions of POCUS gamification distance learning. Methods This was a cross-sectional study at an academic center.
