We presented naturalistic combinations of virtual self-movement stimuli while recording neuronal activity in monkey cerebral cortex. Monkeys used a joystick to drive to a straight ahead heading direction guided by either object motion or optic flow. The selected cue dominates neuronal responses, often mimicking responses evoked when that stimulus is presented alone. In some neurons, driving strategy creates selective response additivities. In others, it creates vulnerabilities to the disruptive effects of independently moving objects. Such cue interactions may be related to the disruptive effe

BACKGROUND: Driving is the preferred mode of transportation for adults across the healthy age span. However, motor vehicle crashes are among the leading causes of injury and death, especially for older adults, and under distracted driving conditions. Understanding the neuroanatomical basis of driving may inform interventions that minimize crashes. This exploratory study examined the neuroanatomical correlates of undistracted and distracted simulated straight driving.
METHODS: One-hundred-and-thirty-eight participants (40.6% female) aged 17-85 years old (mean and SD = 58.1 ± 19.9 years) perfor

OBJECTIVE: Aging increases crash risk through failures to prioritize safety-critical actions amid competing information. The neural basis of adaptive cognitive control under these demands remains insufficiently understood.
METHODS: This study examined age effects on braking prioritization in 44 drivers (23 younger, 21 older) using a car-following simulation with lane keeping, in which participants withheld sign responses whenever brake signals took priority. Participants completed Sign (button press to classify road signs), Brake (pedal press to the brake lights of the car ahead), and dual-de

Distracted driving is one of the main causes of traffic accidents. By predicting the attentional state of drivers, it is possible to prevent distractions and promote safe driving. In this study, we developed a model that could predict the degree of distracted driving based on brain activity. Changes in oxyhemoglobin concentrations were measured in drivers while driving a real car using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). A regression model was constructed for each participant using functional connectivity as an explanatory variable and brake reaction time to random beeps while drivi

BACKGROUND: Sleepiness at the wheel and driving while engaged in other activities are well known risk factors for traffic accidents. This article estimates the prevalence of these factors among Italian Professional Drivers (PDs) and their impact on reported driving mistakes.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using anonymous questionnaires. PDs (n=497) were divided into two groups: high-risk PDs (HiRis_PDs) (those who self-reported more than one incident during the last 3 years and/or more than one mistake during the past year) and non-HiRis_PDs (subjects who did not meet the abov

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of auditory-verbal distraction on driving performance in Parkinson disease (PD).
METHODS: We tested licensed, currently active drivers with mild-to-moderate PD (n = 71) and elderly controls with no neurologic disease (n = 147) on a battery of cognitive, visual, and motor tests. While they drove on a four-lane interstate freeway in an instrumented vehicle, we determined at-fault safety errors and vehicle control measures during a distracter task (Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task [PASAT]) and on an uneventful baseline segment.
RESULTS: Compared with controls

OBJECTIVE: Distracted driving is one of the key factors contributing to road crashes. Real-time and robust monitoring of drivers' states is of great significance for improving the level of road traffic safety. Existing methods based on convolutional neural networks still face challenges in terms of generalization ability and practicality under cross-scenario, cross-device, and complex environmental conditions.
METHODS: To enhance the adaptability and robustness of the model in diverse real driving scenarios, this paper proposes a lightweight detection framework with enhanced generalization ab

Multitasking while driving negatively affects driving performance and threatens people's lives every day. Moreover, technology-based distractions are among the top driving distractions that are proven to divert the driver's attention away from the road and compromise their safety. This study employs recent data on road traffic accidents that occurred in Spain and uses a machine-learning algorithm to analyze, in the first place, the influence of technology-based distracted driving on drivers' infractions considering the gender and age of the drivers and the zone and the type of vehicle. It asse

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) remains one of the most technically challenging disorders of the craniovertebral junction. Traditional combined anterior-posterior approaches, although effective, carry substantial morbidity. The posterior facet distraction and fusion (PFDF) technique achieves reduction through sequential facet release and distraction, offering a safer posterior-only alternative. This single-center retrospective study aimed to evaluate the reduction efficacy, clinical outcomes, and safety of a PFDF-centered surgical strategy, and to develop and validate

The promise of vehicle automation technology should allow occupants to utilize their time inside vehicles without becoming motion sick. Investigating this topic requires a safe replicable induction method that aligns with real-world driving dynamics. How engagement in non-driving related tasks contribute towards occupants' motion sickness levels also needs to be studied. The current within-subjects study investigated fully automated unprovocative and provocative driving conditions with and without an NDRT using a motion-based driving simulator. Results showed provocative driving led to higher

OBJECTIVE: Efficient and safe address entry is crucial to in-vehicle navigation systems. Although various text input methods (TIMs) are commercially available, to date, the details of the driver's interactions with these TIMs in the vehicle are poorly understood. Therefore, the effect of four alternative TIMs conditions on in-vehicle navigation displays usability and driver distraction were directly compared. For reference, the baseline driving task (distraction-free) was also investigated.
METHODS: A city expressway simulator experiment including 25 young drivers was launched. Under each con

Distracted driving is regarded as an integrated task requiring different regions of the brain to receive sensory data, coordinate information, make decisions, and synchronize movements. In this paper, we applied an independent modulator analysis (IMA) method to temporally independent electroencephalography (EEG) components to understand how the human executive control system coordinates different brain regions to simultaneously perform multiple tasks with distractions presented in different modalities. The behavioral results showed that the reaction time (RT) in response to traffic events incr
