District of Columbia Community Health Needs Assessment.

The District of Columbia Healthy Communities Collaborative (DCHCC) represents a unique collaboration among D.C.-area hospitals and federally qualified health centers. In response to its community commitment and Affordable Care Act requirements, DCHCC set forth to conduct a community health needs assessment (CHNA) that can guide decisions about where and how to allocate resources and implement appropriate health interventions for the population it serves. The CHNA described in this article includes analysis of existing demographic, health status, and hospital service use data, as well as hospit

Leading causes of infant deaths in the District of Columbia.

Causes of infant deaths were analyzed from the linked vital records of 1988 for the District of Columbia. According to a new cause-of-death classification, 57% of the deaths were attributed to "prematurity and related conditions," as compared with only 31% due to "disorders relating to short gestation and unspecified low birthweight" and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in the three-digit ICD-9 classification. Two thirds of infant deaths were "preventable." However, 92% of these occurred to infants weighing less than 1500 g. Not only was a greater proportion of black deaths (71%) preventabl

HIV among women in the District of Columbia: an evolving epidemic?

The epidemiology of HIV in urban centers of the United States such as the District of Columbia (DC) is dynamic with rates of new HIV and AIDS diagnoses as well as risk factors elevated. Correlates of HIV among heterosexual women extend beyond traditional, individual risk factors to structural factors. The purpose of this study was to compare proportions of HIV and correlates of HIV among women participating in National HIV behavioral surveillance (NHBS) system in 2006-7 (NHBS Cycle 1) and 2010 (NHBS Cycle 2). Analysis of 677 female participants at elevated risk for HIV revealed high prevalence

Alcohol-associated deaths in the District of Columbia--a postmortem study.

Ethyl alcohol and its lethal effects were present either in the victim or in the environment, including persons responsible for a given death, in 53% of the cases autopsied during a six-month period at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the District of Columbia. The results of this small, admittedly biased, sample indicate that the acute and chronic effects of alcohol are a major public health problem in this jurisdiction. Comparative figures from other medical examiner's systems suggest the national prevalence of the problem and confirm the gross inadequacy of data from death certifi

Norovirus outbreak in an elementary school--District of Columbia, February 2007.

On February 8, 2007, the District of Columbia Department of Health (DCDOH) was notified of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis in an elementary school (prekindergarten through sixth grade). The school nurse reported that 27 students and two staff members had become ill during February 4--8 with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; because symptoms lasted <48 hours, a viral etiology was suspected. DCDOH recommended two preinvestigation interventions, which were implemented the same evening (February 8): 1) more thorough handwashing and 2) bleach cleaning of all shared environmental surfaces with a

Sexual behavior and condom use--District of Columbia, January-February, 1992.

From 1980 through 1990, the cumulative incidence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the District of Columbia (DC) (2713 cases per 100,000 persons) was approximately eight times that of the surrounding metropolitan area (340 per 100,000) (1). From 1980 through 1986, the AIDS epidemic primarily involved men who had sex with men; since 1986, the incidence of AIDS has been increasing among injecting-drug users (IDUs) and their sex partners (1). Although AIDS incidence in DC has been projected to increase by 34% from 1990 to 1994 (1), patterns of sexual behavior and condom use are unkn

Traffic fatalities in 50 U.S. States and District of Columbia from 1970-2024.

OBJECTIVE: Traffic fatalities in 50 U.S. States and District of Columbia were analyzed from 1970-2024 using a 1970 reference. Benchmarks were defined for groups of States with High, Mid, and Low traffic fatality ratios (smallest to largest fatality reductions). Relationships were determined for fatality ratios based on State population, registered vehicles, vehicle mileage (VMT), and gross domestic product (GDP). METHODS: The fatality ratio (e.g., D24/D70) was calculated by the number of traffic fatalities each year (e.g., D24) divided by the fatalities in 1970 (D70) for each State. The fatal

Infectious disease burden and vaccination needs among asylees versus refugees, district of columbia.

BACKGROUND: Unlike US-bound refugees, asylum seekers (asylees) apply for asylum while residing in the United States and are not provided a medical screening. Infectious disease burden and vaccination needs have not been described among US asylees. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 630 asylees and 151 refugees referred to the District of Columbia (DC) Department of Health screening program for an initial US medical screening during September 2003-August 2007. We assessed the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (tuberculin skin test reactivity ≥10 mm), human immunode

Laboratory Capacity for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Surveillance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae-District of Columbia, 2007-2012.

BACKGROUND: In the District of Columbia (DC), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhea) infections accounted for more than 25% of 9321 incident sexually transmitted infections reported in 2011; untreated infections can lead to reproductive complications and a higher risk for HIV transmission. In DC, limited capacity to measure the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant N. gonorrhoeae is available; culture-based antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) is needed to monitor antimicrobial resistance. We examined the capacity of laboratories that report to the DC Department of Health to perform AST for ongoing

Racial differences in ill defined cancer mortality in the United States and in the District of Columbia.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aim was to examine the epidemiology of unknown primary cancer mortality in the USA during 1979 to 1988 by age, sex, race, year, and geographical area. DESIGN: National (US) and state data were abstracted for deaths due to ill defined cancer (ICD-9 195.0 to 199.1) and all cancers combined (ICD-9 140.0-209.9). Age adjusted mortality rates were calculated using the 1980 USA population as the standard, and standardised rate ratios were derived. National total cancer incidence data were obtained from the surveillance, epidemiology and end results (SEER) program, and age and se
