Justin is a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder who presented with daytime and night-time wetting. He had been toilet trained at the age of 3 years but was back in diapers as a result of the enuresis. His bowel movements were normal. The initial evaluation consisted of a urinalysis, urine culture, serum creatinine level, and renal/bladder ultrasound examination. The urine studies were normal. The serum creatinine level was elevated at 1.0 mg/dL. The ultrasound examination revealed bilateral mild hydronephrosis and a thickened bladder wall. A voiding cystouret

We reviewed retrospectively 456 patients with diurnal enuresis to determine the relationship between spina bifida occulta and attainment of continence. Of these patients 127 had undergone x-rays of the spine and 48 children (48%) had spina bifida occulta. The clinical course of these patients was compared to 79 enuretic children with normal spine films. All patients were initially treated with a timed voiding program and 28 with persistent enuresis were given anticholinergic medication. Findings on urodynamic studies were similar for both groups. Uninhibited bladder contractions were found in

Plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) levels, urinary flow and urine osmolality were investigated in a group of adolescents (20 boys and 5 girls), aged 11-21 y, with severe monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis and a control group of healthy adolescents (16M and 4F) with similar age- and sex-distribution. Half of the control group was investigated twice, with an interval of 6 months. AVP samples were taken every fourth hour in all adolescents and half of the control group were also investigated every second hour to achieve more samples during controlled sleep. After the study the enuretic group were

Bupropion hydrochloride (HCl) is an antidepressant that has many different biological targets, acting as both a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor as well as a nicotinic antagonist. This second-generation antidepressant is available in 3 bioequivalent formulations: immediate release, sustained release, and extended release, allowing providers to customize a patient's regimen for maximum tolerability and compliance. Although bupropion HCl's safety and tolerability have been demonstrated through several clinical trials, there are still a number of adverse effects that have been reported

BACKGROUND/AIM: Nocturnal enuresis can be frustrating for children and their families as the child ages. Our aim is to evaluate urine aquaporin 2 (AQP-2) as a noninvasive biomarker of water balance in children with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 90 children; sixty-eight children suffering from PMNE aged (9.57 ± 2.16) years and 22 healthy children with good toilet control, matched sex and age. All enuretic children were subjected to complete history taking, clinical evaluation, and bed wetting diary. Serum arginine vasopressin (AVP)

The circadian variation of plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in relation to urinary excretion of sodium (UNa) and potassium (UK) as well as clearance of creatinine (Ccrea) was assessed in 15 juvenile patients with enuresis nocturna and compared with 11 age-, sex-, and weight-matched normal subjects. Normal juveniles showed a highly significant diurnal variation (p less than 0.001) of plasma ANP with diurnal peak levels at midnight (0000 hours) and minimum levels at 0400 hours. Enuretic patients showed a similar diurnal rhythmicity with normal levels during day and night. In normals both

PURPOSE: We analyzed the relative contribution of detrusor instability and difficult arousal from sleep in the genesis of nocturnal enuresis (NE), and evaluate a clinical feature that may prospectively help differentiate patients with monosymptomatic NE (mono NE) from those with diurnal voiding symptoms (DVSs) of urgency and urge incontinence associated with NE (NE + DVSs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients referred for voiding problems and 627 controls were evaluated for NE, DVSs, nocturia and arousal from sleep on a scale of 1 to 8. Patients were categorized into 3 groups-mono NE of primary o

A 12-year-old boy with hemiparesis, severe mental retardation, reduced mobility and behavioural problems was not yet toilet trained. He was successfully trained using a behavioural treatment. The training program was based on gradual prolongation of urine retention, the introduction of behaviour restrictions, rewards for using the toilet and overcorrection using repeated exercises if diurnal enuresis occurred. A third of 4- to 18-year-olds with a cerebral palsy do not have diurnal bladder control at the age of 6, in contrast to 1-3% in the general population. An important cause of this differe

Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic commonly used in the treatment of childhood disorders, such as bipolar disorder, psychosis, and irritability associated with autism spectrum disorder. Common side effects of its use include extrapyramidal side effects, somnolence, tremor, fatigue, nausea, and akathisia. Enuresis is an additional and rare side effect of aripiprazole use. There is limited data on the subject of enuresis induced as a result of treatment with aripiprazole. To our knowledge, there are no reports in the literature on aripiprazole-induced enuresis continuum in children. In th

AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of currently available guidelines on non-neurogenic daytime urinary incontinence (DUI) in children and compare their content regarding the assessment of a child with DUI.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic search for guidelines on non-neurogenic DUI in children. A multidisciplinary team assessed the quality using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE) instrument, which contains 23 items organized into six domains. Besides, each member evaluated if they would recommend using the guidelines. We extracted diagnostic recom

OBJECTIVES: Wearable alarm systems are frequently used tools added to urotherapy for children with both daytime and nighttime urinary incontinence. For functional daytime incontinence (DUI) specifically, the effect of alarm interventions has not been systematically reviewed. This study systematically evaluates, summarizes, reviews, and analyzes existing evidence about the effect of wearable alarm systems in urotherapy for children with functional DUI.
STUDY DESIGN: We completed a comprehensive literature search in August 2022 using MEDLINE/PUBMED, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, Web of Sc

Purpose This study aims to evaluate the endoscopic morphological features of congenital posterior urethral obstructions in boys with refractory daytime urinary incontinence and/or nocturnal enuresis. Patients and Methods A total of 54 consecutive patients underwent endoscopy and were diagnosed with a posterior urethral valve (PUV) (types 1-4). PUV type 1 was classified as severe, moderate, or mild. A transurethral incision (TUI) was mainly performed for anterior wall lesions of the PUV. Voiding cystourethrography and pressure flow studies (PFS) were performed before and 3 to 4 months after TUI

ADHD and incontinence are common childhood disorders which co-occur at much higher rates than expected by chance. The aim of this review was to provide an overview both of the comorbidity of nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI) and faecal incontinence (FI) in children with ADHD; and, vice versa, of the co-occurrence of ADHD in children with NE, DUI and FI. Most clinical studies have focussed on the association of ADHD and NE. Population-based studies have shown that children with DUI have an even greater risk for ADHD than those with NE. While children with FI have the h
