Rare cyanobacteria drive nitrogen-fixation and cyanotoxin production in an Aphanizomenon-dominated bloom.

Late summer, recurring cyanobacterial blooms in Lake of the Woods (LOW) are polycyanobacterial and typically dominated by Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. LOW waters are typically nitrogen limited, relative to phosphorus. As such, the dominance of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, a putative nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium, suggests that its ability to fix nitrogen may be advantageous and aid in its ability to bloom. This study sought to quantify nitrogen fixation rates and identify cyanotoxin-producing species during the blooms. Throughout the 2021 season, we quantified nutrients, N-fixation rates, microbial

The relative sensitivity of macrophyte and algal species to herbicides and fungicides: an analysis using species sensitivity distributions.

Lemna spp. are the standard test species representing aquatic macrophytes in the current risk assessment schemes for herbicides and plant growth regulators in the European Union and North America. At a Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) 2008 workshop on Aquatic Macrophyte Risk Assessment for Pesticides (AMRAP), a Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD) working group was formed to address uncertainties about the sensitivity of Lemna spp. relative to other aquatic macrophyte species. For 11 herbicides and 3 fungicides for which relevant and reliable data were found for at l

The toxic effect of oxytetracycline and trimethoprim in the aquatic environment.

The objective of our study was the investigation of the toxic properties of two antimicrobial drugs: oxytetracycline (OTC) and trimethoprim (TMP) in the aquatic environment. The toxic effects were tested according to the OECD guidelines for the testing of chemicals, on the cyanobacteria Anabaena flos-aque, on the alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, on the daphnid Daphnia magna as well as on the activated sludge. We discussed the short term and long term results of tests on cyanobacteria and microalgae. Both experiments were concluded in 72h allowing direct comparison of sensitivity of the tw

Cyanopeptide Co-Production Dynamics beyond Mirocystins and Effects of Growth Stages and Nutrient Availability.

Intensified cyanobacterial bloom events are of increasing global concern because of adverse effects associated with the release of bioactive compounds, including toxic cyanopeptides. Cyanobacteria can produce a variety of cyanopeptides, yet our knowledge about their abundance and co-production remains limited. We applied a suspect-screening approach, including 700 structurally known cyanopeptides, and identified 11 cyanopeptides in Microcystis aeruginosa and 17 in Dolichospermum flos-aquae. Total cyanopeptide concentrations ranged from high nmol to μmol gdry-1 with slightly higher cell quotas

Optimization of isolation and concentration of the common freshwater cyanobacterial toxins ATX-a, CYN and MC-LR using standard techniques, optimization of cyanobacteria growth.

Some of the most commonly identified freshwater toxins are anatoxin-a (ATX-a), cylindrospermopsin (CYN), and microcystin-LR (MC-LR). The aim of this paper was to compare different methods of extracting and concentrating these cyanotoxins and check the impact of selected physical factors on the accumulation of biomass of Dolichospermum flos-aquae, Microcystis aeruginosa, and Raphidiopsis raciborskii. The effect of different cyanobacteria cultivation conditions on the amount of cyanotoxins synthesized showed no significant changes over time in the average concentration of all tested toxins in th

Sediment potentially controls in-lake phosphorus cycling and harmful cyanobacteria in shallow, eutrophic Utah Lake.

Lakes worldwide are impacted by eutrophication and harmful algal or cyanobacteria blooms (HABs) due to excessive nutrients, including legacy P released from sediments in shallow lakes. Utah Lake (northern Utah, USA) is a shallow lake with urban development primarily on the east side of the watershed, providing an opportunity to evaluate HABs in relation to a gradient of legacy sediment P. In this study, we investigated sediment composition and P concentrations in sediment, pore water, and the water column in relation to blooms of harmful cyanobacteria species. Sediments on the east side of the

Transcriptomic and proteomic responses to gas vesicle collapse in native and engineered bacterial systems.

Gas vesicles (GVs) are air-filled protein nanostructures produced by microbes to regulate buoyancy and have emerged as powerful tools in biomedical imaging, particularly as acoustic reporter genes. Their mechanically robust shells enclose a stable air compartment, which collapses irreversibly when subjected to sufficient hydrostatic or acoustic pressure, leaving behind large protein sheets. This collapse phenomenon underlies key applications such as differential imaging and controlled cavitation and is also believed to occur naturally during buoyancy regulation, yet its physiological consequen

Genomic insights into the taxonomy, safety and biotechnological potential of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and related Nostocales.

The Nostocales are filamentous cyanobacteria that include bloom-forming, nitrogen-fixing species with major ecological and biotechnological relevance. Owing to their metabolic diversity, nitrogen-fixing capabilities and nutritional profile, they hold potential for various biotechnological applications including the production of nutraceuticals and biofertilizers. However, the capacity of certain Nostocales species to produce cyanotoxins also raises health concerns. This study provides a comparative bioinformatic analysis of 161 Nostocales genomes from the National Center for Biotechnology Info

Screening of Bioactive Microalgae from Freshwaters, Collected in Hue, Vietnam: Cytotoxic Constituents from Dolichospermum smithii HU04.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Microalgae are recognized as prolific producers of bioactive metabolites with pharmaceutical potential. This study aimed to isolate and characterize cytotoxic constituents from selected cytotoxic microalgae, collected in Hue city, Vietnam. METHODS: Microalgal samples were collected from freshwater bodies, morphologically identified, and maintained in laboratory culture. Thirteen strains were successfully isolated and cultivated in BG11, Z8, and BBM media to determine optimal growth conditions. Cytotoxic effects of extracts/compounds were determined using the sulforhodam
