Ocular prevalence versus ocular dominance.

UNLABELLED: Ocular dominance manifests itself in tests that contain stereo-objects with a disparity beyond Panum's area, e.g. in pointing a finger. These tests force subjects to decide in favour of one or the other eye. In contrast, ocular prevalence is determined using stereo-targets imaged within Panum's areas. These tests allow a graded quantification of the balance between the eyes. Here we present the computer-based Freiburg Ocular Prevalence Test in which stereo-disparate targets have to be aligned, and compare it with the Haase Stereo-balance Test that requires an estimation of the hori

Ocular dominance and amblyopia.

Ocular dominance, as measured in sighting tests, involves a temporary suppression of the input from the non-dominant eye in order to avoid diplopia. Amblyopia ex anopsia may be viewed as a long term suppression of the input from one eye for the same reason. In the absence of anisometropia, paralysis of extra ocular muscles, or other factors which would tend to determine which eye would manifest suppression, the non-dominant sighting eye should be more likely to develop amblyopia given the presence of strabismus. A sample of 258 amblyopes supports this prediction based on the population norms f

Ocular dominance columns in strabismus.

During development, the projection from the lateral geniculate nucleus to striate cortex becomes segregated into monocular regions called ocular dominance columns. Prior studies in cats have suggested that experimental strabismus or alternating monocular occlusion increases the width and segregation of columns. In the squirrel monkey, strabismus has been reported to induce the formation of ocular dominance columns. However, these studies are difficult to interpret because no animal can serve as its own control and the degree of inter-individual variability among normal subjects is considerable

Effect of Ocular Dominance on Ocular Blood Flow Parameters.

PURPOSE: In binocular vision, there is a dominant eye and a nondominant eye, a phenomenon termed ocular dominance. This study determined the differences and associations of the ocular blood flow parameters between dominant and nondominant eyes in healthy Japanese subjects. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 128 eyes of 64 subjects (13 male and 51 female) aged ≥ 20 years. The ocular blood flow parameters were assessed using laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG), and software was used to calculate the mean blur rate (MBR), which reflects the blood flow velocity. RESULTS: There were no sign

Ocular Dominance Plasticity: A Mini-Review.

Ocular dominance plasticity, the ability of the brain to change sensory eye balance, has traditionally been believed to be extremely limited in adult visual cortex. However, recent studies on short-term monocular deprivation (MD) demonstrate that its presence is prevalent in adult humans, as short-term MD is capable of significantly shifting ocular dominance in favor of the previously deprived eye. Thus, findings over the last 15 years highlight that short-term MD can be a promising alternative treatment for amblyopia, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by binocular imbalance. Convent

Unstable ocular dominance and reading ability.

An ocular anomaly, unstable ocular dominance, has been shown to be associated with poor reading performance in clinically selected subjects. A study is reported in which this anomaly was examined in a nonclinical sample. Two groups of children of similar reading performance and IQ but differing in chronological age were selected. The older children had a mean discrepancy between their reading and chronological age of 19 months. Unstable ocular dominance was more frequent in these poor readers. The hypothesis that this instability would lead to more errors and longer decision times for distingu

[The influence of ocular dominance on monovision--the influence of strength of ocular dominance on visual functions].

PURPOSE: Monovision is a method of correction for presbyopia. We have reported the advantage of conventional monovision (the dominant eye is corrected for distance). In this study, we investigated the influence of interocular imbalance of dominancy on the visual function. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Ten healthy subjects without any ophthalmologic disease participated. After cycloplegia, the eyes of the subjects were corrected by soft contact lenses with an artificial pupil (diameter: 3.0mm). The dominant eye was corrected for distance, and the difference in lens power between the lenses was 2.5 D.

Association Between Ocular Dominance and Anisometropic Hyperopia.

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: Anisometropia, a relative difference in the refractive state of the two eyes, is common in hyperopic patients. We investigated the association between ocular dominance (sighting dominance) and refractive asymmetry in patients with hyperopia. METHODS: This retrospective study included 223 hyperopic patients with a mean age of 10.1 ± 3.6 years (range 3 to 21 years). Refractive error was measured with cycloplegic refraction, and axial length was measured with IOLMaster® (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA). Ocular dominance was assessed with the hole-in-the-card test. The a

Non-Synaptic Mechanism of Ocular Dominance Plasticity.

Classic experiments showing that monocular visual disruption alters synaptic connections to binocular neurons established the fundamental concept of synaptic plasticity. Synaptic inputs that are activated coincidently with postsynaptic action potential firing are strengthened, and inputs from cells firing before or after the postsynaptic action potential are weakened. An implicit assumption, however, is that the speed of impulse transmission is not altered by visual deprivation. If so, spike time arrival at binocular neurons would be affected, thereby inducing synaptic plasticity. This possibi

Ocular dominance column development: analysis and simulation.

The visual cortex of many adult mammals has patches of cells that receive inputs driven by the right eye alternating with patches that receive inputs driven by the left eye. These ocular dominance patches (or "columns") form during early life as a consequence of competition between the activity patterns of the two eyes. A mathematical model of several biological mechanisms that can account for this development is presented. Analysis of this model reveals the conditions under which ocular dominance segregation will occur and determines the resulting patch width. Simulations of the model also ex

Motor cortex rTMS modulates adult ocular dominance plasticity.

Well-established evidence supports cross-modal interactions of sensory brain plasticity. Here, we extend cross-modality beyond the boundaries of sensory regions and provide first-time evidence in adult healthy humans that motor plasticity influences homeostatic visual plasticity. To this end, we employed repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), known to modulate the excitation/inhibition balance in the primary motor cortex (M1), while examining the impact of this intervention on ocular dominance plasticity induced by short-term monocular deprivation (MD). Specifically, participants

The effect of ocular dominance on choroidal structures.

This study aimed to compare the dominant and non-dominant eyes of healthy individuals in terms of CT and CVI values to assess the effect of ocular dominance on choroidal morphology. Three hundred eyes of 150 individuals were included in this study. All patients underwent routine ophthalmological examinations and hole-in-the-card tests to determine the dominant eye. EDI-OCT was used to obtain choroidal images. Choroidal thickness (CT) was measured at three points on the choroid including the subfoveal region (subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT)), 1500 μm nasal (NCT) and temporal (TCT) to the f

Ocular dominance plasticity: inhibitory interactions and contrast equivalence.

Brief monocular occlusion results in a transient change in ocular dominance, such that the previously patched eye makes a stronger contribution to the binocular percept after occlusion. The previously unpatched eye therefore makes a correspondingly weaker contribution to the binocular sum. To shed light on the mechanism underlying this change we investigate how the relationship between the perception of fusion, suppression, and diplopia changes after short-term monocular deprivation. Results show that fusible stimuli seen by the unpatched eye are actively suppressed as a result of patching and

Age-dependent ocular dominance plasticity in adult mice.

BACKGROUND: Short monocular deprivation (4 days) induces a shift in the ocular dominance of binocular neurons in the juvenile mouse visual cortex but is ineffective in adults. Recently, it has been shown that an ocular dominance shift can still be elicited in young adults (around 90 days of age) by longer periods of deprivation (7 days). Whether the same is true also for fully mature animals is not yet known. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We therefore studied the effects of different periods of monocular deprivation (4, 7, 14 days) on ocular dominance in C57Bl/6 mice of different ages (25 d
