[Aortic flow measurement by transesophageal Doppler effect].

Continuous measurement of cardiac output by thermodilution is invasive, impractical and unpleasant for the patient. We propose to measure descending aortic blood flow with a specially designed intra-oesophageal Doppler echo probe. The apparatus is composed of two main parts. First an A scan system makes possible the measurement of the diameter of the vessel, second a continuous wave velocimeter is used to measure the spatial mean velocity of the blood. An output calculator determines the descending aortic blood flow. The oesophageal catheter contains three ultrasonic transducers at its tip mou

The effect of contralateral disease on carotid Doppler frequency.

Continuous-wave Doppler frequency analysis is one standard of noninvasive evaluation for stenotic carotid disease. Interpretation is most commonly based on frequency recorded at the site of stenosis. If flow velocity is increased because of contralateral disease, this criterion may overstate the degree of stenosis. To investigate this, three centers contributed 167 patients to a study of carotid Doppler frequency analysis. Each patient underwent bilateral carotid studies by a standard protocol with use of continuous-wave 5 MHz Doppler probe. There were 309 patent and 25 occluded internal carot

Generalized Doppler effect for high-accuracy frequency shift measurement.

Laser Doppler effect enables a wide range of precision measurements. However, its traditional implementations, including linear, rotational, and vectorial forms, have historically been treated as isolated phenomena, and meanwhile, their accuracy is fundamentally limited by the achievable frequency shift magnitude due to single controllable parameter. Here, we report a generalized Doppler effect that overcomes these limitations and enhances metrological accuracy. Such effect arises when tailored vectorially polarized dual-vortex fields derived from spin-orbit coupling interact with moving scatt

Effect of antenatal betamethasone therapy on maternal-fetal Doppler velocimetry.

BACKGROUND: The effect of antenatal betamethasone on fetal parameters includes a transient reduction of FHR variation and of fetal body movements. An effect on maternal-fetal blood flow has also been shown, with non-univocal results. AIMS: To evaluate the effect of antenatal betamethasone in third trimester singleton high-risk pregnancies by Doppler technology. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirty-six pregnant women who received a full course of betamethasone (12 mg i.m. two times, 24 h apart) were studied. The Doppler examination included the assessment of the pulsatility index (PI) of the umbilica

Laser-Doppler assessment of brain microcirculation: effect of systemic alterations.

There is a need for new technical approaches whereby the cerebral microcirculation can be easily and continuously assessed. The objective of this study was to determine whether laser-Doppler (LD) flowmetry can be utilized to assess changes in cerebral cortical blood flow and to determine whether changes in blood perfusion measured by LD flowmetry correlate with simultaneously measured changes in flow measured by H2 clearance in cats or with changes in pial arteriolar diameter measured with a microscope in rabbits equipped with a closed cranial window. In the rabbit experiments a 0.84-mm-diam L

[Transcranial doppler sonography. Effect of sevoflurane in comparison to isoflurane].

METHODS: Using transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD), we studied the effects of sevoflurane compared to equipotent doses of isoflurane on blood-flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) before, during, and after general anaesthesia. In random order, 30 patients received sevoflurane (n = 15) or isoflurane (n = 15) given in stepwise-increasing doses of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 MAC in oxygen/air (FiO2 = 0.5). Oxygen/air was then replaced by oxygen/nitrous oxide 33%/65% with decreasing doses (1.5, 1.0, 0.5 MAC) of sevoflurane or isoflurane. During each step, ventilation was controlled to provide

The effect of handgrip upon Doppler data in mitral stenosis.

UNLABELLED: The usefulness of physical rehabilitation in patients with valvular heart disease is now well established. But, mainly in mitral stenosis, the isometric exercises are under question, because of the risk of sudden rise in capillary pulmonary pressure. In order to clarify this aspect we have studied the effect of isometric exercise upon Doppler data in mitral stenosis. METHODS: in 25 patients with mitral stenosis the Doppler indices of severity-mitral valve area (MVA), pressure half time (PHT), maximal velocity (MxV), mean pressure gradient (MPG)-were determined before and after 3-4

Effects of valve dysfunction on Doppler Tei index.

BACKGROUND: Recently proposed Doppler Tei index, defined as the sum of isovolumic contraction time or mitral valve closure to aortic valve opening time and isovolumic relaxation time or aortic valve closure to mitral valve opening time divided by ejection time, is a simple measure which enables noninvasive estimation of combined systolic and diastolic function and prediction of patients' prognosis. However, effects of valve dysfunction on Tei index have not been investigated. This study was designed to compare Tei index before and after surgical valve replacement or repair to evaluate effects

Effect of pulse Doppler ultrasound on placental hormone excretion in vitro.

There is no literature data on the effects of ultrasound on the metabolism of placental tissue. In the present study, the authors have investigated the possible influence of pulsed field Doppler ultrasound on hormonal excretion of human placental trophoblasts in vitro. For the detection of placental hormones, specific immunoassays for chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), human placental lactogen (hPL), estrogen and progesterone were used. Compared to control trophoblast hormone excretion, pulsed field ultrasound exposure induced no changes in the excretion of the hormones in vitro. The authors were u

The effect of heart rate on color M-mode Doppler flow propagation velocity and continuous-wave Doppler parameters in aortic insufficiency.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: The results of previous studies have suggested that an increase in heart rate (HR) may have a beneficial effect on the hemodynamic condition of patients with aortic regurgitation (AR), and reduce AR severity. An increase in HR was shown to cause a significant increase in regurgitant slope and to significantly shorten the pressure half-time (PHT), both of which are considered to be signs of worsening regurgitation. Color M-mode Doppler flow propagation velocity (FPV) was used to assess AR severity, but no data were available regarding the effects of HR on FPV me

Effect of hemodialysis on uterine and umbilical artery Doppler flow velocity waveforms.

A case of a pregnant woman with membranous glomerulonephropathy requiring hemodialysis is described. During hemodialysis the patient underwent Doppler flow studies of the uterine and umbilical arteries. In spite of avoidance of hypotension and major fluid shifts, hemodialysis was accompanied by a significant increase in the systolic/diastolic ratio of the proximal uterine artery. There was no significant change in the umbilical artery systolic/diastolic ratio.

Effectiveness of vardenafil versus papaverine in penile Doppler ultrasonography.

PURPOSE: To evaluate erectile dysfunction, penile color Doppler ultrasound is currently considered the best method. But intracavernous injection is invasive and has adverse effects, such as prolonged erection and risk of priapism. In our study we want to evaluate whether vardenafil can be used instead of papaverine in penile Doppler ultrasonography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 24 patients with erectile dysfunction underwent color Doppler ultrasound before and after intracavernous injection of 60 mg papaverine with genital and audiovisual sexual stimulation. The effect of foot position on Power Doppler Ultrasound grading of Achilles enthesitis.

The aim of this study was to determine whether foot position could modify power Doppler grading in evaluation of the Achilles enthesis. Eighteen patients with clinical Achilles enthesitis were studied with power Doppler ultrasound (PDUS) in five different positions of the foot: active and passive dorsiflexion, neutral position, active and passive plantar flexion. The Doppler signal was graded in any position and compared with the others. The Doppler signal was higher with the foot in plantar flexion and decreased gradually, sometimes till to disappear, while increasing dorsiflexion. The Dopple

Effect of parity on second-trimester uterine artery Doppler flow velocity and waveforms.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between second-trimester uterine artery Doppler findings and parity in a large pregnant population. METHODS: Uterine artery Doppler studies were performed in all singleton pregnancies at 18-23 weeks of gestation. The mean uterine artery resistance index and the presence or absence of protodiastolic notches were recorded. Two groups were identified: pregnancies not complicated by pre-eclampsia, and pregnancies with pre-eclampsia severe enough to require delivery at or before 32 weeks of gestation. RESULTS: In the 4132 pregnancies uncomplicated by pr

Tissue heating effect of pulsed Doppler ultrasound in the live fetal lamb brain.

A series of experiments in fetal lambs investigated the heating effects of pulsed Doppler ultrasound on fetal brain tissue. In dead lamb brain, tissue heating was observed at the skull bone-to-brain interface. Minimal or no temperature rise was found in the live lamb, suggesting that the intact circulation conducts away any potential heating. The choice of animal model and the state of the circulation influence the results obtained. This will of course have implications for clinical practice.

Adverse effect of nifedipine on left ventricular obstruction detected by pulsed Doppler echocardiography.

The effect of nifedipine on the ejection flow pattern in the left ventricular outflow tract was observed using pulsed Doppler echocardiography in 6 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. After sublingual administration of nifedipine (10 mg) to 1 patient, the turbulent ejection flow pattern became more marked and increased in duration compared with the initial state. An increase in turbulence in the left ventricular outflow tract may increase the pressure gradient between the left ventricle and the aorta. Nifedipine appeared to have the potential of adverse action on left ventricular outflo
