Fostering positive and strong partnerships between clinicians and doulas is essential and can benefit patients, clinicians, and the workplace. The evidence suggests that, when doulas are part of health care teams, they improve patients' experiences and outcomes. Doula-clinician partnerships have demonstrated improvements in communication and patient-centered care, accountability in the health care team, and continuity of care for individuals who have given birth. Doula support aligns with evidence-based outcomes and reduces costs to the overall health system. Barriers to doula-clinician partne

BACKGROUND: It is widely recognized that migrant women from low-income countries are considered to be a group with increased obstetric challenges. To address these challenges, cultural doulas were introduced to provide continuous emotional and practical support during childbirth in Sweden. Leveraging their shared cultural background, language skills, and understanding, the idea behind these doulas was supposed to facilitate effective communication between the woman, her partner, and healthcare staff, with the assumption that this would lead to better maternity care for migrants. The aim of thi

OBJECTIVE: Arkansas has significant health disparities for maternal and infant outcomes, including high rates of low birth weight, preterm birth, severe maternal morbidity, and both maternal and infant mortality. Multiple studies have identified advantages of including doulas in maternal care teams. The purpose of this article was to describe the evolution of doulas in Arkansas.
METHODS: Leaders began training the workforce with only a hope of reimbursement, and doula organizations continued to evolve from informal dispersed networks into a formal statewide organization, the Doula Alliance of

BACKGROUND: Delivery of consistent patient-centred care at end-of-life care continues to challenge healthcare providers and research continues to suggest that peoples' needs are not being reliably met. Consequently, healthcare services are looking to innovate how support is provided, such as commissioning doulas to support dying people and those close to them.
OBJECTIVE: Within the United Kingdom, there is little existing research about peoples' experience of receiving end-of-life doula support. This paper outlines the design of a survey for the family or friends of a person who received end-

BACKGROUND: Women in socially disadvantaged positions face increased risk of fear of birth, birth complications, and postpartum depression, highlighting the need for targeted interventions for this group. Doula support is associated with positive emotional and medical outcomes for mother and child. Experience of doula support for women in socially disadvantaged positions in Sweden remains unexplored.
AIM: To describe experiences of doula support within a project for women in socially disadvantaged positions in Sweden.
METHODS: In-depth interviews with seven women and focus group discussions

BACKGROUND: Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed continues to be a critical issue in Black communities, despite the widespread initiatives to promote safe sleep. Doulas are in an ideal position to promote safe sleep, particularly in hard-to-reach communities that are more distrusting of conventional medical providers. Little is known about their practices and perspectives for putting infants down to rest. This study informs this gap in the literature.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore doulas' perspectives and practices in the field of putting infants down to sleep.

INTRODUCTION: Racially and linguistically concordant doula care has reduced disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality rates for Black birthing people. This mixed-methods pilot implementation study assessed the feasibility of implementing and maintaining a novel partnership between a community doula organization led by 2 Black doulas and an urban academic tertiary care hospital.
METHODS: The Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance framework was used to design and evaluate implementation. Black birthing people were recruited from the hospital's midwifery and genera

Introduction: Breastfeeding is considered the ideal source of infant nutrition and has been shown to enhance maternal-infant health, but most women do not achieve their breastfeeding goals. Significant racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities exist in breastfeeding outcomes. While current literature indicates a positive association between doula support and breastfeeding, the specific breastfeeding outcomes impacted by doulas remain unclear. Our objective was to synthesize existing literature on breastfeeding outcomes when doulas are utilized. Methods: Electronic searches were conducted i

OBJECTIVE: Trauma and trauma-related health conditions are common during pregnancy, but there is little evidence and guidance on how doulas (trained lay birth assistants) can provide trauma-informed care. The purpose of this narrative review is to critique and synthesize the existing evidence for trauma-informed doula care and to offer guidelines for practice.
DESIGN: We conducted a narrative review of existing evidence in the peer-reviewed and gray literatures on trauma-informed care in maternity and perinatal settings including doula training curricula and community-based doula guidelines o

IMPORTANCE: Doulas are trained professionals that provide comprehensive support during the perinatal period. Doula-supported care is associated with improved maternal and infant outcomes including decreased preterm birth, increased breastfeeding initiation, and higher patient satisfaction. In addition, research suggests that doula support is a promising strategy to mitigate racial disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This article reviews doulas' scope of practice, perinatal outcomes associated with doula-assisted care, and their impact on alleviating racial dispariti

Intimate partner violence (IPV) impacts one in four individuals during the perinatal period. Doulas are instrumental sources of support; however, there are few trainings created by and for doulas on healthy relationship education and addressing IPV. In this practice note, we describe the development and evaluation of a mixed-media, hybrid, longitudinal training for a cohort of English- and Spanish-speaking community doulas on supporting IPV survivors during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. A multidisciplinary team of IPV advocates, IPV survivors, doulas, community leaders, artists, and resear

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality rates continue to rise in the United States. Considerable racial disparities exist, as Black women face two to three times the risks of dying from pregnancy-related complications compared with white women. Doulas have been associated with improved maternal outcomes. This study aimed to 1) investigate Florida doulas' perspectives and influence on severe maternal morbidity/mortality and related inequities, as well as 2) identify opportunities for actionable change. The social ecological model, which acknowledges how individual, interpersonal, institutional, communi

INTRODUCTION: Doulas have been found to be beneficial to pregnant adolescents during childbirth, but little is known about their role within the larger system of people providing birth support, including family and health care providers. The purpose of this study was to examine, from the perspectives of young mothers, the role of the doula within their broader birth support system.
METHODS: One hundred pregnant Black adolescents and young women (aged 13 to 21) who were provided perinatal community-based and racially concordant doula services at no cost to them were interviewed after the birth

OBJECTIVES: The annual costs of US maternity-related hospitalizations exceed $27 billion. Continuous labor support from a trained doula is associated with improved outcomes and potential cost savings. This study aimed to document the relationship between doula support, desire for doula support, and cesarean delivery, distinguishing cesarean deliveries without a definitive medical indication.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of a nationally representative survey of women who delivered a singleton baby in a US hospital in 2011- 2012 (N = 2400).
METHODS: Multivariable logistic regression an

Racial and ethnic disparities continue to affect maternal mortality, morbidity, and birth outcomes. Historically marginalized communities currently face higher rates of cesarean surgery, preterm birth, low birth weight, and infant mortality. Increased accessibility to culturally congruent doula services can help bridge disparities in maternal mortality, morbidity, and birth outcomes. This feasibility study aimed to characterize the need for doula care among patients of two large academic hospitals to inform the creation of a hospital-based doula program. In partnership with community-based mid

BACKGROUND: The United States suffers from an increasing rate of severe maternal morbidity, paired with a wide disparity in maternal health by race. Doulas are posited to be a useful resource to increase positive outcomes and to decrease this disparity.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between doula care and a broad range of maternal and neonatal outcomes in various subpopulations.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of deliveries that were recorded from January 2021 to December 2022 at a single institution where they received prenatal care. The exposur
