Modeling metal bioaccumulation in the invasive mussels Dreissena polymorpha and Dreissena rostriformis bugensis in the rivers Rhine and Meuse.

The metal-specific covalent index and the species-specific size-based filtration rate were integrated into a biokinetic model estimating metal bioaccumulation in mussels from the dissolved phase and phytoplankton. The model was validated for zebra (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) mussels in the rivers Rhine and Meuse, the Netherlands. The model performed well in predicting tissue concentrations in different-sized zebra mussels from various sampling sites for (55) Mn, (56) Fe, (59) Co, (60) Ni, (82) Se, (111) Cd, (118) Sn, and (208) Pb (r(2) =0.71-0.99). Molecular and genotoxic effects of carbamazepine and methylmercury on the gonads of Dreissena polymorpha.

Carbamazepine (CBZ) and methylmercury (MeHg) are pervasive contaminants that share molecular toxicity pathways (e.g., neurotoxicity, oxidative stress, energy metabolism) and, in addition to their main toxicity target, are both suspected of reprotoxicity. Yet, the precise mechanisms behind these putative effects remain a subject of ongoing investigation. Dreissena polymorpha holds great potential for freshwater biomonitoring due to its wide distribution and filter-feeder lifestyle, but the influence of the reproductive stage for the biological response to pollutants is still understudied. Here,

Resilience of Dreissena polymorpha in wastewater effluent: Use as a bioremediation tool?

Nowadays, it is necessary to improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment plant treatments. In this context the use of biofilter species, like Dreissena polymorpha, as a bioremediation tool in wastewater is increasingly highlighted. The innovative aim of this study is to evaluate the zebra mussel survival in the outlet channel of a conventional WWTP to use them as bioremediation tool. For this, mussels were transplanted in the outlet channel for 28 days and different biomarkers were monitored. D. polymorpha is able to maintain itself in good physiological conditions until 21 days, yet at 28

Assessing microbial contamination and antibiotic resistant bacteria using zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha).

Aquatic pollution with faecal bacteria and subsequent consumption of contaminated water or food is a worldwide issue that causes severe health effects (e.g. meningitis, salmonellosis, dysentery). In addition, the excessive use of antibiotics in animal husbandry and human medicine has enhanced the selective pressure on pathogenic bacteria, further increasing human health risks and detrimental effects on natural microbial communities. This urges the need to monitor faecal contamination using a time-integrated approach, as grab water samples can miss pathogen peaks. We tested the ability of zebra

Cellular and molecular complementary immune stress markers for the model species Dreissena polymorpha.

This study aimed to combine cellular and molecular analyses for better detail the effects of various stresses on a sentinel species of freshwater invertebrate. For this purpose, the hemocytes of the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, were exposed to different stresses at two different intensities, high or low: chemical (cadmium and ionomycin), physical (ultraviolet B), or biological ones (Cryptosporidium parvum and Toxoplasma gondii). After exposure, flow cytometry and droplet digital PCR analyses were performed on the same pools of hemocytes. Several responses related to necrosis, apoptosis,

Biotransformation and antioxidant enzymes of Dreissena polymorpha for detection of site impact in watercourses of Berlin.

This study investigated whether biotransformation and antioxidant enzymes of an organism tolerant to pollution such as the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha can be employed to evaluate the extent of urban water pollution. Activity changes of soluble and membrane bound glutathione S-transferase (s- and mGST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) to environmental stress were explored in precultured mussels exposed for one day to one week at selected sites with reasonable anthropogenic impact. The enzymatic response of whole mussel tissue was compared to gil

Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha): evidence from the St Lawrence River.

Molluscan shellfish can recover and concentrate environmentally derived waterborne pathogens and can be used for the sanitary assessment of water quality. Oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum (genotype 1) were identified in zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) from the St. Lawrence River, Quebec. Approximately 67 oocysts/ml of hemolymph and 129 oocysts/g of soft tissue were recovered. The adjusted concentration of oocysts per gram of tissue was 2.2 x 10(2), and approximately 4.4 x 10(2) oocysts were recovered from a single mussel. Zebra mussels can serve as biological indicators of waterborne con

Evaluation of the accumulation of the iodinated contrast agents diatrizoic acid and iohexol in Dreissena polymorpha mollusks.

Mollusks are very sensitive to aquatic environmental alterations and then, are important bio-indicators for monitoring the contamination of water bodies. Iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICMs) are ubiquitously present in the aquatic environment, primarily due to their high consumption for diagnosis purposes, high injection levels, low biodegradability, and low removal rates by wastewater treatment plants. Although these compounds are assumed to be of low toxicity, aquatic organisms are continuously exposed to these agents, which may result in adverse effects as ICMs can act as iodine source and

Use of the bivalve Dreissena polymorpha as a biomonitoring tool to reflect the protozoan load in freshwater bodies.

Cryptosporidium parvum, Toxoplasma gondii and Giardia duodenalis are worldwide pathogenic protozoa recognized as major causal agents of waterborne disease outbreaks. To overcome the normative process (ISO 15553/2006) limitations of protozoa detection in aquatic systems, we propose to use the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha), a freshwater bivalve mollusc, as a tool for biomonitoring protozoan contamination. Mussels were exposed to three concentrations of C. parvum oocysts, G. duodenalis cysts or T. gondii oocysts for 21 days followed by 21 days of depuration in clear water. D. polymorpha acc

Zebra mussel adhesion: structure of the byssal adhesive apparatus in the freshwater mussel, Dreissena polymorpha.

The freshwater zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) owes a large part of its success as an invasive species to its ability to attach to a wide variety of substrates. As in marine mussels, this attachment is achieved by a proteinaceous byssus, a series of threads joined at a stem that connect the mussel to adhesive plaques secreted onto the substrate. Although the zebra mussel byssus is superficially similar to marine mussels, significant structural and compositional differences suggest that further investigation of the adhesion mechanisms in this freshwater species is warranted. Here we present

First evidence of cytotoxic effects of human protozoan parasites on zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) haemocytes.

The interaction between human protozoan parasites and the immune cells of bivalves, that can accumulate them, is poorly described. The purpose of this study is to consider the mechanisms of action of some of these protozoa on zebra mussel haemocytes, by evaluating their cytotoxic potential. Haemocytes were exposed to Toxoplasma gondii, Giardia duodenalis or Cryptosporidium parvum (oo)cysts. The results showed a cytotoxic potency of the two largest protozoa on haemocytes and suggested the formation of haemocyte aggregates. Thus, this study reveals the first signs of a haemocyte:protozoan intera

Lessons learned from studies with the freshwater mussel Dreissena polymorpha exposed to platinum, palladium and rhodium.

The platinum group elements (PGE) platinum, palladium and rhodium gain increasing (eco-)toxicological interest due to their cumulative introduction into ecosystems. So far, most PGE exposure studies investigating biological availability, uptake and bioaccumulation of PGE as well as their effects on different toxicological endpoints were performed under non-standardized conditions which occasionally make an interpretation and comparison of the results difficult. Here we compare the results of different PGE exposure studies with zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) showing influences due to the

Assessing a low-dose copper treatment for dreissenid mussels: Effects on zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) population.

We conducted and evaluated a low-dose copper treatment (applied as EarthTec QZ) to suppress zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas 1771) veliger abundance and settlement in a 66.3 ha bay in Lake Minnetonka (Hennepin County, MN) over a 3-y period. We maintained a mean (standard deviation [SD]) concentration of 83.0 (10.3) µg/L as copper over the 10-d treatment period, much lower than the maximum allowable 1 mg/L as copper. Veliger density was reduced from 6.0 veligers/L before treatment to 0.3 veligers/L following the treatment period. Posttreatment zebra mussel settlement was 1900 times low

Relationship between pesticide accumulation in transplanted zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) and community structure of aquatic macroinvertebrates.

This study examined to what degree bioaccumulated pesticides in transplanted zebra mussels can give an insight to pesticide bioavailability in the environment. In addition, it was investigated if pesticide body residues could be related to ecological responses (changes in macroinvertebrate community composition). For this at 17 locations, 14 pesticide concentrations and nine dissolved metals were measured in translocated zebra mussels and the results were related to the structure of the macroinvertebrate community. Critical body burdens in zebra mussel, above which the ecological status was al

Carbon dioxide infusion reduces invasive mussel biofouling (quagga mussel; Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) in raw water systems.

The efficacy of carbon dioxide (CO2) to reduce biofouling by quagga mussels (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) in raw water systems was investigated. Experiments were conducted in a mobile laboratory located at Bureau of Reclamation Davis Dam Hydropower Facility and supplied with raw water from Lake Mohave, a reservoir of the Colorado River, USA. Incoming water was split between five chambers, each infused with CO2 at a different rate. Raw reservoir water containing quagga larvae (veligers) was mixed with CO2 chamber outflows and delivered to tanks containing settlement plates. Two experiments

Unveiling the hidden threat: Molecular, cellular and behavioral effects of dietborne inorganic mercury and methylmercury in Dreissena polymorpha.

Methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation in food webs has been recognized as a significant health risk for over 50 years, yet most studies focus on high concentrations of waterborne inorganic mercury (IHg). This study investigates the effects of dietborne mercury (Hg) exposure at environmentally realistic IHg and MeHg levels on a freshwater food chain. Freshwater mussels, Dreissena polymorpha, were fed with microalgae previously contaminated with 2 and 20 fg IHg or MeHg per cell for 4 d. Mechanistic simulation of bioconcentration kinetics of waterborne Cd, Ag, Pd, and Pt in the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha.

Mechanistic models based on chemical properties of metals and body size have received substantial attention for their potential application to various metals and to different conditions without required calibration. This advantage has been demonstrated for a number of metals, such as Cd and Ag. However, the capacity of metal-specific chemical properties to explain variations in the accumulation for platinum-group elements (PGEs) has not been investigated yet, although emission of these metals is of increasing concern.
