Feeding and drinking behavior problems.

The physiologic and behavioral basis of normal canine and feline feeding is given in detail. Abnormalities of ingestive behavior include obesity and anorexia in both species, flank or blanket sucking in Doberman Pinschers, coprophagia and stone chewing in dogs, and wool chewing in cats. Drinking behavior is discussed briefly, and the abnormalities of hypernatremia (a failure of thirst) and psychogenic polydipsia and polyphagia are reviewed.

Excessive water drinking behavior in autism.

The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of polydipsia in 49 autistic children, and also the influence of psychotropic drugs and residential factors on water drinking behavior, as compared with in 89 mentally retarded children, in schools for mentally handicapped children in Fukui prefecture. Questionnaires were used to detect polydipsia and to assess the severity of the water drinking behavior in the autistic children and mentally retarded children. The incidence of polydipsia in the autistic children tended to be higher (P = 0.074) than that in the retarded children. The severity

Attitudes and knowledge about drinking: relationships with drinking behavior among pregnant teenagers.

Data were collected on the drinking behavior of 415 pregnant adolescents from 1990 to 1994. The relationships between knowledge and attitudes about drinking and drinking behavior were examined. Knowledge about drinking was not related to average daily volume of alcohol before or during pregnancy. Those with specific knowledge about fetal alcohol effects drank less before pregnancy, and in the first trimester, and were also less likely to drink to intoxication. Among drinkers, general knowledge about drinking was significantly related to a decrease in drinking between pre-pregnancy and first tr

Maternal drinking behavior and decreased intrauterine growth.

Reduced intrauterine growth has been a widely observed effect of maternal alcohol use during pregnancy in both animals and humans, although results in studies of humans have been inconsistent. The goal of this prospective study was to evaluate the relative importance of volume, frequency, and beverage source of alcohol as determinants of infant birthweight, while adjusting for other known determinants using multivariate techniques. In a sample of 5,093 maternal-infant pairs, 44 potential determinants of intrauterine growth were evaluated. The frequency of beer drinking, controlled for wine dri

Relating distractor suppression to problematic drinking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Impaired cognitive control has been linked to weakened self-regulatory processes underlying compulsive substance intake. Previous research has provided evidence for impaired task performance in substance-abusing groups during Stroop and Go/No-Go tasks. Mechanisms of distractor suppression in visual search might also involve overlapping regulatory components that support goal-directed behavior by resolving the attentional competition between distractors and the target of search. However, the efficiency of learning-dependent distractor suppression has not been examined in the context

Academic and social motives and drinking behavior.

This longitudinal study of 1,447 first-time college students tested separate time-varying covariate models of the relations between academic and social motives/behaviors and alcohol use and related problems from senior year of high school through the end of the second year in college. Structural equation models identified small but significant inverse relations between academic motives/behaviors and alcohol use across all time points, with relations of somewhat larger magnitude between academic motives/behaviors and alcohol-related problems across all semesters other than senior year in high s

[Alcohol drinking among students and behavior disorders].

The study concerns relationship between the amount of consumed alcohol (vodka), related to blood alcohol concentration, and behaviour, 1255 students (670 men and 585 women) were studied. Probable alcohol concentration and resulting behavioral signs were assumed basing of B. Leonhard's model (1983). The analysis of the results revealed that 33% of women and 12% of men did not use vodka. Most proportion of men (about 25%) will have blood alcohol level in the range 0.09-0.12% and similar group (about 25%) will have above 0.3% alcohol in blood judging from the volume of used vodka. Most women (30%

Drinking behavior and exercise-thermal stress: role of drink carbonation.

This study investigated the influence of drink carbonation and carbohydrate content on ad libitum drinking behavior and body fluid and electrolyte responses during prolonged exercise in the heat. Eight competitive male runners completed three 2-hr treadmill runs at 60% VO2max in an environmental chamber maintained at 30 degrees C and 40% RH. Three test drinks were used: 8% carbohydrate, low carbonation (8%-C); 8% carbohydrate, noncarbonated (8%-NC), and water (0%-NC). Blood samples were taken preexercise (0), at 60 and 120 min of exercise, and at 60 min of recovery (+60 min). The data suggest

Impact of pubertal stage at first drink on adult drinking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Early alcohol use is one of the strongest predictors of later alcohol use disorders, with early use usually taking place during puberty. Many researchers have suggested drinking during puberty as a potential biological basis of the age at first drink (AFD) effect. However, the influence of the pubertal phase at alcohol use initiation on subsequent drinking in later life has not been examined so far. METHODS: Pubertal stage at first drink (PSFD) was determined in N = 283 young adults (131 males, 152 females) from an epidemiological cohort study. At ages 19, 22, and 23 years, drinki

Maternal drinking and risky sexual behavior in offspring.

Teenage mothers are more likely to use drugs, and their children are more likely to use substances and become pregnant during adolescence. Teenage mothers' substance use may play a role in the intergenerational risk for adolescent pregnancy. Pregnant adolescents (12-18 years) were seen during pregnancy and postnatal years 6, 10, 14, and 16 (n = 332). Teenage mothers reported on substance use and family characteristics. The offspring reported substance use (starting at age 10) and sexual behavior (ages 14 and 16). Prenatal alcohol exposure was associated with offspring (a) having a risky first

Reliability of college student self-reported drinking behavior.

College students represent a unique population among substance users, with developmental needs and motivational factors different from those of other adults with substance abuse problems. As most college-based treatment programs focus on harm reduction, the reliability of self-reported substance use is critical to assessing treatment needs and outcomes. This study examined the reliability of students' self-reported alcohol consumption for the month prior to entering a treatment program at two points in time. It was hypothesized that: (a) students required to attend a drug and alcohol education

Daily Drinking Behaviors and the Influence of Rumination, Impulsivity, and Social Drinking Contexts.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity may mediate the effect of rumination on daily drinking behaviors via a negative emotional cascade, though few studies have examined temporal associations of rumination and impulsivity leading to drinking within the day. Social drinking contexts may also influence the negative emotional cascade, with social and solitary conditions potentially moderating these associations. METHODS: This study used multilevel structural equation modeling (MSEM) to examine the mediating effect of impulsivity between rumination and drinking behaviors at the within- and between-person level

Exclusively drinking sucrose or saline early in life alters adult drinking behavior by laboratory rats.

Proper fluid balance is critical for life. Learning plays an important role in shaping the appetitive behaviors required for drinking. Children often forego drinking plain water and instead consume beverages such as milk or juice. What effect this may have on adult thirst responses remains an open question. To model aspects of the human condition, we bred Sprague-Dawley rats and prevented the pups from obtaining fluid other than from nursing. Pups were weaned onto either tap water, 5% sucrose, or 0.45% saline, and given access to only that fluid for at least 7 weeks. We then measured intake of

Screening for at-risk drinking behavior in trauma patients.

CONTEXT: A blood alcohol level above 0 g/dL is found in up to 50% of patients presenting with traumatic injuries. The presence of alcohol in the blood not only increases the risk of traumatic injury, but it is also associated with worse outcomes and trauma recidivism. In light of these risks, the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma advocates screening for at-risk drinking. Although many institutions use blood alcohol levels to determine at-risk drinking in trauma patients, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) offers a cheap and easy alternative. Few direct compari

Pharmacological evaluation of methylcarbamylcholine-induced drinking behavior in rats.

Methylcarbamylcholine (MCC), a structural analog of carbachol (an acetylcholine agonist), has been reported to be a specific nicotinic cholinergic receptor ligand. MCC produces a robust polydipsic response shortly following central administration. The purpose of the present study was to pharmacologically characterize this increase in drinking behavior. Male Wistar rats were implanted with intracerebroventricular (ICV) cannula guides directed at the left lateral ventricle. Following a recovery period, animals were injected ICV with saline or various doses of MCC (3-60 micrograms) and water cons

Retrospective analysis of lifetime changes in women's drinking behavior.

Retrospective data on drinking behavior and related life experiences have been a neglected resource in research on alcohol use in the general population. Data from a 1981 national survey of women's drinking indicate the potential value of retrospective data analysis. The 1981 data provide comparative ages of onset for drinking behavior, drinking consequences, and health problems, and allow comparisons among different cohorts of women. The data also show the variability in women's lifetime drinking patterns and the time-ordering of heavy drinking in relation to onset of depression and reproduct

Endogenous renin-angiotensin system and drinking behavior in flounder.

High rates of drinking in seawater-adapted, compared with freshwater (FW)-adapted, flounder were associated with raised plasma chloride and osmotic concentrations. Hypotension in FW-adapted fish, after papaverine administration, gave rise to greatly elevated rates of drinking. This dipsogenic response apparently relied on activation of the endogenous renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and was abolished by simultaneous administration of the converting enzyme inhibitor, captopril. Exogenous angiotensin II was shown to be dipsogenic and vasopressor in the FW-adapted fish. The physiological importance

Behavioral analysis of drinking behaviors in polydipsic patients with chronic schizophrenia.

The authors describe drinking and voiding behaviors that differentiate between psychiatric patients with polydipsia and patient controls. Observations of 9 polydipsic patients and 6 controls were conducted for 153 hr and had high interrater reliability. Polydipsic patients drank 3 times as frequently, ingesting 5 times as much fluid as the controls. They voided 4 times as often, eliminated 5 times as much urine, and evidenced greater diurnal weight shifts. A higher bout frequency and a shorter time interval between drinks differentiated polydipsic patients from controls, whereas amount drunk p

The impact of interlock installation on driving behavior and drinking behavior related to driving.

OBJECTIVE: There is a substantial body of evidence that the recidivism of impaired-driving offenders is reduced while an ignition interlock device (IID) is on their vehicles. This study examines changes in driving behaviors and drinking behaviors used by DWI offenders to manage driving with the IID. METHODS: A total of 166 IID participants who completed two surveys covering the period from arrest to IID installation (T1) and during IID use (T2) were examined. Four domains were covered: demographics, driving environments and transportation needs, reported driving activity, and reported drinkin

Sexual assault, drinking norms, and drinking behavior among a national sample of lesbian and bisexual women.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and adolescent/adult sexual assault (ASA) are strongly associated with women's alcohol use and the rates of both alcohol use and sexual assault history are higher among lesbian and bisexual women than heterosexual women. Although descriptive drinking norms are one of the highest predictors of alcohol use in emerging adults, this is the first study to examine the relationship between sexual assault history, drinking norms, and alcohol use in lesbian and bisexual women. We found that CSA severity was associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing more severe alc
