Food insufficiency, substance use, and sexual risks for HIV/AIDS in informal drinking establishments, Cape Town, South Africa.

HIV/AIDS is concentrated in impoverished communities. Two critical aspects of poverty are food insufficiency and substance abuse, and both are associated with sexual risks for HIV/AIDS in southern Africa. The current study is the first to examine both hunger and substance use in relation to sexual risks for HIV infection in South African alcohol serving establishments. Anonymous venue-based intercept surveys were completed by men (n = 388) and women (n = 407) patrons of six informal drinking places (e.g., shebeens) in Cape Town, South Africa. Food insufficiency and its more extreme form hunger

Establishment of etonitazene as a reinforcer for rats by use of schedule-induced drinking.

Drinking of etonitazene HCl by 6 rats was studied during daily 4-hr sessions. Five related experiments were conducted sequentially. In the first experiment schedule-induced polydipsia was established. Subsequently, etonitazene concentrations (1.25, 2.5 and 5.0 microgram/ml) were substituted for water, and intake of large quantities of the drug occurred. In the second experiment the concurrent food reinforcement schedule was discontinued and lever presses maintained by etonitazene (5 microgram/ml) persisted. In the third experiment the number of lever presses, required per dipper presentation o

A national assessment of on-premise drinking establishments near public universities: Drink prices, drink specials, indoor tobacco use, and state-level alcohol laws.

BACKGROUND: Inexpensive drinks and price promotions increase alcohol consumption and have been observed at on-premise drinking establishments near large colleges. Some bars may sell tobacco products and allow indoor tobacco use to encourage patrons to stay and drink more. This study examined drink prices/specials and associated practices of on-premise drinking establishments including tobacco sales and policies regarding tobacco use. METHODS: In 2018, telephone calls about prices/practices were made to 403 randomly selected bars/nightclubs within 2 miles of large residential universities in e

Drinking typography established by scheduled induction predicts chronic heavy drinking in a monkey model of ethanol self-administration.

BACKGROUND: We have developed an animal model of alcohol self-administration that initially employs schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP) to establish reliable ethanol consumption under open access (22 h/d) conditions with food and water concurrently available. SIP is an adjunctive behavior that is generated by constraining access to an important commodity (e.g., flavored food). The induction schedule and ethanol polydipsia generated under these conditions affords the opportunity to investigate the development of drinking typologies that lead to chronic, excessive alcohol consumption. METHODS: Ad

"It's better for me to drink, at least the stress is going away": perspectives on alcohol use during pregnancy among South African women attending drinking establishments.

The Western Cape of South Africa has one of the highest rates of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) globally. Reducing alcohol use during pregnancy is a pressing public health priority for this region, but insight into the experiences of women who drink during pregnancy is lacking. Convenience sampling in alcohol-serving venues was used to identify women who were currently pregnant (n = 12) or recently post-partum (n = 12) and reported drinking during the pregnancy period. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted between April and August 2013. Interviews explored drinking narratives

Food safety practice and associated factors among food handlers working in food and drinking establishments in Debre Birhan City, North Eastern Ethiopia: A convergent parallel mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: Food-borne illnesses pose a major global public health threat, affecting up to 30% of people annually in higher-income countries and contributing to hundreds of thousands of deaths each year with the heaviest burden falling on low and middle income countries. In Ethiopia, prior research on food handlers' safety practices has been limited to quantitative methods offering little insight into cultural, behavioral and institutional barriers. To the best of our knowledge, limited mixed-methods evidence exists in this context. Therefore, this mixed-methods study addresses the gap through

Establishment of appropriate conditions for the efficient determination of multiple mycotoxins in tea samples and assessment of their drinking risks.

Conditions were determined for rapid, convenient, and efficient determination of 16 common mycotoxins in tea samples. Mycotoxins in tea leaves and tea infusion samples were extracted using solid-liquid extraction/liquid-liquid extraction combined with ultrasonic-assisted extraction. The extraction solvent was 2-butanone/ethyl acetate (9/1 v/v) with 0.1 % formic acid. The established conditions enabled the analysis of these mycotoxins by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) in 5.5 min. In addition, HPLC with a temperature-controlled fluorescence de

Establishment of a Rat Model of Alcoholic Liver Fibrosis with Simulated Human Drinking Patterns and Low-Dose Chemical Stimulation.

Although alcohol is a well-known causal factor associated with liver diseases, challenges remain in inducing liver fibrosis in experimental rodent models. These challenges include rodents' natural aversion to high concentrations of alcohol, rapid alcohol metabolism, the need for a prolonged duration of alcohol administration, and technical difficulties. Therefore, it is crucial to establish an experimental model that can replicate the features of alcoholic liver fibrosis. The objective of this study was to develop a feasible rat model of alcoholic liver fibrosis that emulates human drinking pa

Individual-Level Interventions for Alcohol-Related Harm in Night-Time Entertainment Precincts: A Scoping Review.

ISSUES: Alcohol-related harm in Night-Time Entertainment Precincts (NEP) presents significant challenges for public health, law enforcement and policymakers. While population-wide measures are well established, less attention has been given to individual-level interventions targeting harmful alcohol consumption and violence. This review evaluates the current evidence base on individual-level interventions designed to reduce alcohol-related harm in NEPs. APPROACH: A systematic search was conducted in March 2024 (updated search in January 2025) across ProQuest, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Medline, Scopus

Illicit Alcohol in Victorian Off-Licence Retailers: A Preliminary Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Illicit alcohol sales account for 90% of the alcohol-related lost tax revenue in Australia (unrecorded alcohol); however, there is a paucity of research on this segment of the alcohol market. It is currently unclear if illicit alcohol is widely available in Australia and whether it is safe for human consumption. METHODS: In this preliminary investigation, to establish immediate availability, we visited four licensed alcohol retailers in high socio-economic areas of Melbourne, Victoria, during June, July and September 2025. We found and purchased three suspected illicit alcohol p

Beliefs about fetal alcohol spectrum disorder among men and women at alcohol serving establishments in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: South Africa has one of the highest rates of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in the world. However, little is known about what men and women who attend alcohol serving establishments believe about alcohol use during pregnancy and how these beliefs may be related to alcohol use. OBJECTIVES: To understand FASD beliefs and related behaviors among men and women attending alcohol-serving establishments. METHODS: We surveyed 1047 men (n = 565) and women (n = 482) -including pregnant women and men with pregnant partners- attending alcohol serving establishments in a township loca

Nudging Drink Choice in Pubs: The Impact of Introducing Alcohol-Free Beer on Alcohol Sales and Venue Revenues.

INTRODUCTION: The project aims to evaluate the impact of introducing alcohol-free (AF) beer using three behavioural 'nudges' designed to encourage consumer uptake. Nudges are subtle changes to the choice environment that encourage particular behaviours without restricting consumer choice. METHODS: We conducted a sequential mixed-method approach incorporating an exploratory quasi-experimental, non-randomised study of intervention with a before-and-after design in a field setting to gather temporal insights, collecting daily sales data over a 9-month period in three different pubs and qualitati

The influence of status on group drinking by young adults: a survey of natural drinking groups on their way to and from bars.

BACKGROUND: Young people's social standing among friends and peers has been linked to general levels of drinking and has been shown to influence others' drinking. We extend previous research by examining young adults' status within their natural-occurring drinking groups as a predictor of their subsequent alcohol consumption and encouragement of group members' alcohol consumption during a night out at licensed drinking establishments, a salient context for heavy drinking and alcohol-related risk among young adults. METHODS: We recruited same-sex young adult drinking groups (n = 104 groups; 63

Field trial of alcohol-server training for prevention of fetal alcohol syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: An alcohol-server training program to prevent fetal alcohol syndrome was developed, implemented, and evaluated in a comparison study of public drinking establishments in New Mexico and Oregon. METHOD: The management and serving staffs of 148 establishments licensed for on-premise alcohol sales in the two states studied were trained to discourage alcohol consumption by pregnant customers. Pre- and post-tests of server responses to pregnant-appearing "pseudo-patron" actors ordering alcohol in experimental (n = 148) and comparison (n = 183) establishments were a key method of evaluati

Recent developments in alcoholism:public drinking.

Drinking in bars and other public establishments has been a relatively neglected subject of research, despite its epidemiological significance. This chapter briefly summarizes the findings of observational studies in bars and taverns, as well as general population surveys on the correlates of tavern patronage. Recent developments in the control of public drinking are described. It is argued that greater attention should be placed on prevention programs that focus on drinking environments. In particular, the emergence of server intervention programs represents a promising new mechanism for the
