Effect of Agitation and Temporary Immersion on Growth and Synthesis of Antibacterial Phenolic Compounds in Genus Drosera.

Sundews (Drosera sp.) are the source of biologically active secondary metabolites: phenolic acids, flavonoids, and 1,4-naphtoquinones. Because obtaining them from the natural environment is impossible (rare and endangered species), in this study modifications of traditional tissue cultures grown in solid medium (SM), such as agitated cultures (ACs) (cultures in liquid medium with rotary shaking) and temporary immersion bioreactors PlantformTM (TIB), were used for multiplication of four sundew species: Drosera peltata, Drosera indica, Drosera regia, and Drosera binata, with simultaneously effec

Individual architecture and photosynthetic performance of the submerged form of Drosera intermedia Hayne.

Drosera intermedia grows in acidic bogs in parts of valleys that are flooded in winter, and that often dry out in summer. It is also described as the sundew of the most heavily hydrated habitats in peatlands, and it is often found in water and even underwater. This sundew is the only one that can tolerate long periods of submersion, and more importantly produces a typical submerged form that can live in such conditions for many years. Submerged habitats are occupied by D. intermedia relatively frequently. The aim of the study was to determine the environmental conditions and architecture of in

The Droserasin 1 PSI: A Membrane-Interacting Antimicrobial Peptide from the Carnivorous Plant Drosera capensis.

The Droserasins, aspartic proteases from the carnivorous plant Drosera capensis, contain a 100-residue plant-specific insert (PSI) that is post-translationally cleaved and independently acts as an antimicrobial peptide. PSIs are of interest not only for their inhibition of microbial growth, but also because they modify the size of lipid vesicles and strongly interact with biological membranes. PSIs may therefore be useful for modulating lipid systems in NMR studies of membrane proteins. Here we present the expression and biophysical characterization of the Droserasin 1 PSI (D1 PSI.) This pepti

Low-dose Drosera rotundifolia induces gene expression changes in 16HBE human bronchial epithelial cells.

Drosera rotundifolia has been traditionally used for the treatment of respiratory diseases in phytotherapy and homeopathy. The mechanisms of action recognized so far are linked to the known effects of specific components, such as flavonoids, but are not completely understood. In this study, the biological functions of D. rotundifolia were explored in vitro following the treatment of bronchial epithelial cells, which are the potential targets of the pharmacological effects of the herbal medicine. To do so, the whole plant ethanolic extract was 1000-fold diluted in water (D. rotundifolia 3×) and

Effects of Extracts and Flavonoids from Drosera rotundifolia L. on Ciliary Beat Frequency and Murine Airway Smooth Muscle.

Extracts from Drosera rotundifolia are traditionally used to treat cough symptoms during a common cold. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of extracts from D. rotundifolia and active compounds on the respiratory tract. Tracheal slices of C57BL/6N mice were used ex vivo to examine effects on airway smooth muscle (ASM) and ciliary beat frequency (CBF). Phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibition assays were carried out to test whether PDE1 or PDE4 are targeted by the active compounds. An ethanol-water extract, as well as an aqueous fraction of this extract, exerted antispasmodic properties

Drosera rotundifolia L. as E. coli biofilm inhibitor: Insights into the mechanism of action using proteomics/metabolomics and toxicity studies.

The successful sustainable cultivation of the well-known medicinal plant sundew on rewetted peatlands not only leads to the preservation of natural populations, but also provides a basis for the sustainable pharmaceutical use of the plant. The bioactive compounds of sundew, flavonoids and naphthoquinones, show biofilm-inhibiting properties against multidrug-resistant, ESBL-producing E. coli strains and open up new therapeutic possibilities. This study investigates the molecular mechanisms of these compounds in biofilm inhibition through proteomic analyses. Specific fractions of flavonoids and

Drosera peltata Smith var. lunata (Buch.-Ham.) C. B. Clarke as a feasible source of plumbagin: phytochemical analysis and antifungal activity assay.

Drosera peltata Smith var. lunata (Buch.-Ham.) C. B. Clarke (DPVL) fractions and plumbagin were tested via broth microdilution techniques on Rhizopus oryzae, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Penicillium citrinum. All of the test substances [petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol fraction and aqueous residue (AR)] except for the AR were active against all the tested strains. The petroleum ether fraction (PEF) was the most active (MIC = 5.86-46.88 μg/ml, MFC = 23.44-93.75 μg/ml) of the five tested substances and therefore, was selected for further analysi

Combination of silver nanoparticles and Drosera binata extract as a possible alternative for antibiotic treatment of burn wound infections caused by resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus is the most common infectious agent involved in the development of skin infections that are associated with antibiotic resistance, such as burn wounds. As drug resistance is a growing problem it is essential to establish novel antimicrobials. Currently, antibiotic resistance in bacteria is successfully controlled by multi-drug therapies. Here we demonstrate that secondary metabolites present in the extract obtained from Drosera binata in vitro cultures are effective antibacterial agents against S. aureus grown in planktonic culture and in biofilm. Moreover, this is the fi

AI-Guided 4D Printing of Carnivorous Plants-Inspired Microneedles for Accelerated Wound Healing.

Artificial intelligence (AI) integrated with bioinspired design enables the development of materials that adapt and dynamically respond to biological cues. In this study, a Drosera capensis-inspired thermo-responsive microneedle (MN) platform was developed, integrating motion, surface, and functional mimicry through AI-guided 4D printing. Shape memory polymers (SMPs) composed of tert-butyl acrylate (tBA) and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) were designed to exhibit reversible shape recovery upon thermal stimulation. The complex shape-memory behavior was quantitatively modeled using multiple ma

Non-pharmacological remedies for post-viral acute cough.

The post-viral acute cough (PAC) is a widespread symptom, mainly in childhood and adolescence, and is usually associated with an acute upper respiratory infection, namely the common cold. The use of cough relievers is, therefore, impressive, as documented by the market data. There are many medical devices and dietary supplements for treating PAC, which contain non-pharmacological components. Ancient people used traditional herbs to treat PAC. Thus, a well-established tradition considers natural remedies as an effective and safe way to relieve PAC. The herbal agents include polyphenols, flavono

Bio-Inspired Soft Grippers Based on Impactive Gripping.

Grasping and manipulation are fundamental ways for many creatures to interact with their environments. Different morphologies and grasping methods of "grippers" are highly evolved to adapt to harsh survival conditions. For example, human hands and bird feet are composed of rigid frames and soft joints. Compared with human hands, some plants like Drosera do not have rigid frames, so they can bend at arbitrary points of the body to capture their prey. Furthermore, many muscular hydrostat animals and plant tendrils can implement more complex twisting motions in 3D space. Recently, inspired by the

Phenolic Secondary Metabolites in Aldrovanda vesiculosa L. (Droseraceae).

Background: Aldrovanda vesiculosa L. is a small aquatic plant that produces snap traps for capturing zooplankton prey. Aldrovanda belongs to the family Droseraceae, which is well known for the production of secondary metabolites (especially naphthoquinones). However, compared to other species in this family (Drosera and Dionaea), A. vesiculosa has been very poorly studied in terms of metabolites. The Aim: To fill this gap in knowledge, we investigated what secondary metabolites are present in the shoots of these plants. A hypothesis was tested stating that there are more metabolites in the you

Hyperoside Protected Against Oxidative Stress-Induced Liver Injury via the PHLPP2-AKT-GSK-3β Signaling Pathway In Vivo and In Vitro.

Hyperoside, isolated from Drosera rotundifolia L., seeds of Cuscuta chinensis Lam., or Hypericum perforatum L., originally showed to possess an antifungal and antibacterial activity, while recently showed the protective effects against oxidative stress-induced liver injury. This study investigated such a protective effect of hyperoside and the underlying molecular mechanisms in vitro and in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-injured rat livers. The data showed that hyperoside was able to prevent the oxidative stress-induced liver morphological changes and CCl4-induced rat liver injury. Hyperoside rev

A Bioinspired Bistable Robotic Gripper with Decoupled Palm and Finger Reconfiguration.

Existing soft grippers often suffer from slow actuation, continuous energy consumption during grasp maintenance, and limited payload-to-weight ratios, which restrict their application in dynamic and unstructured environments. In addition, fixed-geometry designs and multi-actuator architectures frequently compromise geometric adaptability and increase control complexity. To address these limitations, this paper presents a three-finger adaptive bioinspired gripper driven by prestressed tape springs, inspired by the dual-dimensional prey-capture mechanism of Drosera capensis and the basal-scale a
