Drosophilidae feeding on animals and the inherent mystery of their parasitism.

Insect evolution, from a free to a parasitic lifestyle, took eons under the pressure of a plethora of ecological and environmental drivers in different habitats, resulting in varying degrees of interactions with their hosts. Most Drosophilidae are known to be adapted to feeding on substrates rich in bacteria, yeasts and other microfungi. Some of them, mainly those in the Steganinae subfamily, display a singular behaviour, feeding on animal tissues or secretions. This behaviour may represent an evolving tendency towards parasitism. Indeed, while the predatory attitude is typical for the larval

Evaluation of Attractants for Monitoring Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Drosophila suzukii Matsumura is an economically important pest of soft and small fruit crops. Unlike other drosophilid flies, D. suzukii is capable of infesting ripe and partially ripe fruit, which poses a significant pest management challenge, as there is no tolerance for infested or damaged fruit in the marketplace. As a result, producers in many regions rely on calendar-scheduled insecticide applications for D. suzukii management. In order to develop an integrated pest management approach, better tools for monitoring adult fly populations are needed. Over two growing seasons in southern Ont

Associations Between Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) and Fungi in Raspberries.

The invasive vinegar fly, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, has emerged as one of the most serious arthropod pests of primocane red raspberries (Rubus ideaus L.) in the United States. In raspberries, D. suzukii encounter a diverse community of microbes, including fruit rot pathogens such as Botrytis cinerea Pers and Cladosporium cladosporioides de Vries. In this study, our primary objectives were to evaluate D. suzukii-fungal associations and determine D. suzukii's influence on fungal communities in raspberry fruit. Through culture-based surveys of larval gut microbes, we isolated several yeast fu

Effect of the microbiome on pathogen susceptibility across four Drosophilidae species.

Microbiome have been shown to play an important role in host susceptibility to infections in some hosts. However, less is known about whether microbiota-mediated effects are consistent across host species, as our understanding of such interactions may be affected by publication bias. Following on from a large study of 36 species of Drosophilidae challenged with four bacterial pathogens, we identified two candidate host species that might have protective microbiomes based on low susceptibility and high abundance of culturable microbiota; we selected two other host species for comparison. We tes

Distribution, identification and ecology of Phortica genus (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in Spain.

The genus Phortica (Diptera: Drosophilidae) includes five species of small flies in Europe. Phortica variegata, the zoophilic fruit fly, is the main vector of Thelazia callipaeda, a zoonotic parasite that is rapidly spreading througout Europe. Despite extensive studies on thelaziosis in animals and humans, there is limited knowledge about the geographical distribution and hovering activity of these vector flies. In 2023, 1,462 Phortica flies were sampled across 12 Spanish provinces, providing new records of Phortica variegata and Phortica oldenbergi. Surprisingly, P. oldenbergi, previously con

POPULATION DYNAMICS OF DROSOPHILA SUZUKII (DIPTERA: DROSOPHILIDAE) IN BELGIUM IN 2013.

The vinegar fly Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera Drosophilidae), spotted wing drosophila, is a new invasive fruit pest that recently became established in Europe. Unlike other fruit flies that typically only infest overripe and rotten fruit, D. suzukii females oviposit in ripe fruit leading to considerable economic losses of fruit during production. In 2011 and 2012 D. suzukii was detected at several places in Belgium. In 2013, a large-scale monitoring in frame of the project "FLY ALERT" (FOD) was executed using traps with liquid attractant (apple cider vinegar) at more than 100 locatio

Composting susceptible fruit wastes reduces Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) reproductive habitat.

BACKGROUND: Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is an invasive, polyphagous vinegar fly pest that is primarily controlled by calendar-based broad-spectrum insecticide programs. Nonchemical management tactics are urgently needed to reestablish IPM within affected berry and cherry cropping systems. Composting is a post-harvest crop sanitation strategy that could potentially be used to manage D. suzukii infestation of fruit wastes. RESULTS: This study found that D. suzukii emergence decreased exponentially with an increasing proportion of chicken manure, with emergence reduce

The Morphological Transformation of the Thorax during the Eclosion of Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

The model organism Drosophila melanogaster, as a species of Holometabola, undergoes a series of transformations during metamorphosis. To deeply understand its development, it is crucial to study its anatomy during the key developmental stages. We describe the anatomical systems of the thorax, including the endoskeleton, musculature, nervous ganglion, and digestive system, from the late pupal stage to the adult stage, based on micro-CT and 3D visualizations. The development of the endoskeleton causes original and insertional changes in muscles. Several muscles change their shape during developm

Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) Contributes to the Development of Sour Rot in Grape.

This research aimed to more clearly describe the interactions of Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura; Diptera: Drosophilidae) with microorganisms that may contribute to spoilage or quality loss of wine grapes during harvest. Experiments were conducted in controlled laboratory experiments and under field conditions to determine these effects. Laboratory trials determined the role of insect contact and oviposition to vector spoilage bacteria onto wine grapes. In the field, the roles of key organoleptic parameters in grape fruit ripening were assessed to determine their relative contribution to oviposi

Evaluating a CRISPR-based sterile male for Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) control.

Spotted-wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, is a serious invasive pest of small fruits. The novel precision-guided Sterile Insect Technology (pgSIT) uses CRISPR technology to simultaneously produce sterile males and eliminate female offspring. Testing their performance in the laboratory is required before field testing is permitted. We evaluated pgSIT males with wild males regarding suppressing infestation and survivorship. In large cage trials in the laboratory, a 5:1 ratio of sterile to wild males led to a 35% or 41% reduction in offspring, and a 10:1 ratio led to 52% reduct

Evaluating global Vaccinium germplasm for resistance against invasive Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Control of spotted-wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, in small fruits emphasizes biological, cultural, and chemical approaches, whereas studies of host plant resistance as a form of genetic control are just getting underway. The identification of resistance patterns among genotypes of host plants whose fruit, leaves, roots, stems, or seeds are specifically targeted by an invasive pest is the first step in the development of an effective genetic control. Therefore, a detached fruit bioassay was developed to screen for D. suzukii oviposition and larval infestation within berries from 25 repres

Plant essential oils and potassium metabisulfite as repellents for Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, is a globally invasive pest of soft-skinned fruit. Females oviposit into ripening fruit and larvae cause direct destruction of tissues. As many plant essential oils are permitted food additives, they may provide a safe means of protecting fruit from D. suzukii infestation in both conventional and organic production systems. Twelve oils and potassium metabisulfite (KMS) were screened in the laboratory as repellents for D. suzukii flies. Most essential oils deterred D. suzukii flies from cotton wicks containing attractive raspberry juice. Peppermint o

A Performance Index as a Measure of the Host Suitability to Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, known as spotted wing drosophila (SWD), is an Asiatic invasive fruit pest that has spread over the world in the last 15 years, due to its high reproductive rate, its tolerance to different environmental conditions, the international fruit trade, and its wide range of host plants. In Buenos Aires, Argentina, blueberry is a major susceptible crop, although other cultivated and non-cultivated fruit species are frequent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the host suitability of commercial and non-cultivated fruit species (blueberries, plums, mulberries, and cherri

Postharvest CO2 treatment and cold storage for Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) fruit infestation control.

The invasive pest, spotted wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura, 1931) or SWD), damages various soft-skinned fruits, severely impacting orchards and vineyards economically. Current sorting practices in commercial production may overlook early-stage SWD infestations, as visible signs take a few days to appear. Our study focused on managing SWD infesting fruits (blueberry, cherry, and raspberry) without visible signs using an artificial atmosphere with elevated CO2 and low temperature. We hypothesized that these factors affect SWD survival and possibly interact, with potential variatio

Optimizing Caneberry Spray Coverage for Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) Management on Diversified Fruit Farms.

Spray coverage may influence the efficacy of insecticides targeting the invasive vinegar fly Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), a primary pest of raspberries and blackberries. In commercially managed caneberries, spray coverage is typically lowest in the inner and lower plant canopy, regions that overlap with higher levels of adult D. suzukii activity. To understand how spray coverage of fruit impacts efficacy against D. suzukii, laboratory bioassays were conducted using raspberries. In laboratory bioassays, higher spray coverage did not impact larval infestation rates but did increase adult mort

Phortica oldenbergi (Diptera: Drosophilidae): A new potential vector of the zoonotic Thelazia callipaeda eyeworm.

Thelazia callipaeda is a zoonotic nematode parasitizing the eyes of many hosts species, primarily dogs. To date Phortica variegata and Phortica okadai are the only known vectors of this nematode in Europe and China, respectively. In this study we investigated the role played by a third species, Phortica oldenbergi, as vector of T. callipaeda in Europe. Drosophilid flies of this species were collected in central Italy and maintained in laboratory. One hundred forty P. oldenbergi were experimentally infected with T. callipaeda L1 recovered from field collected gravid females belonging to haploty

Effects of Irradiated Sterile Male and Mating Sequence on the Fertility of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

The sterile insect technique has been explored in the laboratory to control populations of Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), a globally invasive pest. We studied the reproductive behavior of D. suzukii including mating frequency, time between matings, and mating duration among non-irradiated flies. Irradiation doses were tested at 0, 60, 90, 110, 120, 150, and 180 Gy to select the optimal dose for producing sterile males. In addition, we examined the effects of mating sequence on offspring production where females were presented with irradiated males first and then wild

Diversity and Abundance of Drosophilidae (Diptera) in Post-Fire Forest Ecosystems of Central European Russia.

Fire can produce long-lasting changes in forest habitat structure and insect communities, but responses may depend on local post-fire conditions rather than fire history alone. We tested two working hypotheses: (1) drosophilid assemblages at fire-affected sites would differ in abundance and species composition from those in unburned forest, and (2) selected species would show consistent associations with fire-affected or unburned habitats and could therefore serve as candidate indicators of post-fire conditions. Drosophilids were sampled at 11 forest sites in the Mordovia State Nature Reserve,
